Will TASM 2 Be the Next Spider-Man 3?

Will TASM 2 Be the Next Spider-Man 3?

Peter Parker may be facing new challenges in the new film, but the same formulaic issues thrive on.

Editorial Opinion

The year is ending; 2013 is closing, which means more information and output about 2014's superhero films is being spilled. Today, the first trailer for the Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been released.

In the trailer, we see the main hero himself, his alter ego, and dying, bed-ridden Norman Osborn. It featured Parker/Spider-Man being introduced to, not one, not two, but three new villains, a dilemma that is clearly reminiscent of the preeminent issue with the culmination of Raimi's trilogy, Spider-Man 3.

In the poster above, we see the very first images of both the Rhino, portrayed by Paul Giamatti, and the Green Goblin, who will be portrayed by actor Dane DeHaan. We also see another image of Electro, played by Academy Award-winning actor Jamie Foxx.

Earlier in the year, there were hints that provoked the idea of a Sinister Six team-up, some of which were followed by ambiguous set photos. These rumors were inflamed, upon the studio announcing that TASM 2 would be followed by two more films: The Amazing Spider-Man 3 (2016), The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (2018), and the confirmation that Paul Giamatti will return as the Rhino for the third installment of the franchise.

How can one movie have so many villains? Will the Amazing Spider-Man follow in the steps of Spider-Man 3? Well, hopefully, the questions can be answered by three photos, each a portal, and a blast from the past.

1) Spider-Man 3 had three villains, excluding Peter's horrific hairstyle, and terrible exudation of "swag".

A link to the trailer can be found below.

"It's great to be Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield). For Peter Parker, there's no feeling quite like swinging between skyscrapers, embracing being the hero, and spending time with Gwen (Emma Stone). But being Spider-Man comes at a price: only Spider-Man can protect his fellow New Yorkers from the formidable villains that threaten the city. With the emergence of Electro (Jamie Foxx), Peter must confront a foe far more powerful than him. And as his old friend, Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), returns, Peter comes to realize that all of his enemies have one thing in common: OsCorp."

@LordMusu, you are acting like you watched the movie. People who say this movie will be terrible has the exact same amount of chance of being right to those who say it will be great. Btw, this should be in editorials.

I personally think this movie will be awesome.

How about you stop embarrassing yourself with all these accusations and watch the movie first?

I didn't like the first film, i said before on this site and many others that it was a repeat of the original SR Spider man film and should have done something different, take a different style to Parker becoming Spider man, but i watched it anyway because i am a comic book nerd my biggest gripe was the way they portrayed Parker being a skater boy rather than a nerd. the whole point of the nerd is to reach out to all the other nerds in the world so they can live through the character (stan lee said that).

But watching the trailer i have to admit that this is what I'm looking forward too. I will add one thing though and this isn't just at Spiderman films only, but to them all.

Why the frick are we now doing dark and gritty for every superhero, why aren't we getting fun comic book films they dont always have to have lead characters to secretly hate having their powers.

I agree that I do need to be mindful that the movie may be good but all I'm saying is having norman osborn and oscorp create all these villains (sinister six) instead of giving them their own origin stories is lazy and so astranged from the origins that its frustrating. Green goblin with yellow hair and a tint of green skin doesn't hold to the potential and creativity that was the original goblin. Spider man's stories were designed to be relatable and unique. It's a very simple formula to follow. Sony once again wont follow. We'll see though.

And the fact that the ending and climax's have been spoiled is also annoying.

So because a movie has a bunch of characters it's automatically going to suck?

Raimi's Spider-Man 3 sucked because he wasn't into making it. The studio was forcing him to use Venom, so rather than build up the character and make him interesting he shoe horned the character into the movie. Raimi basically phoned in the making of Spider-Man 3 just to get to the next movie that he actually wanted to make.

Look at Batman Begins, Scarecrow, Ras Al Ghul, League of Shadows, Falcone hell even Joe Chill. that movie was packed with villains but because it was done well, the movie was just fine. A lot of villains does not make a bad movie.

Spider-Man has a style that no other comic movie right now has going for it. He is the only character that likes his powers and what he does. Every other character in movies now sees his powers and abilities as a curse, Spider-Man enjoys them. Not every character needs to be dark.

So, the whole point of this article about the "same formulaic issues" is just that it has 3 villains?

I don't recall Garfield portraying Peter as a douche. People like you need to learn to let go of the Raimi films.

@dougieisrollingthejays

Yeah it is amazingly funny but I'm not sure if it supposed to be :d

Hope this movie will be awesome and I'm not afraid about it being another Spiderman3...I think sony remembers that [after all they needed to reboot whole franchise after that crap] and they don't want to make that mistake again...also I have faith in Webb cause IMO TASM is the best SM movie.

What I'd like to point out is that Spider-Man 3 wasn't half bad of a movie. Literally the only problem with it is Venom having no story/character development. Everything else in it is pretty good, still the worst Spidey film but it's pretty decent. I mean it received mixed to good reviews and got a fresh on RT, most people I know in General Audience thought it was pretty good. It's just comic fans that I see hate on it, hmm.....reminds of me another three-quel that just came out.

@Yossarian
Glider has the right to express his opinion without being bashed, you must remember all film is subjective.

There I {frick}ing said it.

@GliderMan
Spidey 3 IMHO had its moments but was just decent overall. But that's just me.

This trailer is amazing, TASM2 certainly has the potential to be the best Spidey film ever!

Ah, another one of these. Keep em coming.

Villains....
Let's turn this around.
So instead of following the superhero, you're following the supervillain, let's say.... the Joker from the Dark Knight - he's the main character now.
The rest of the cast - Batman/Bruce Wayne, Rachel Dawes, Harvey Dent, Jim Gordon, Sal Maroni, Lucius Fox, Alfred Pennyworth, Mr Lau, the Chechen, the Scarecrow/Dr Crane, and Coleman Reese.

Think that movie was overcrowded?

I honestly have no freaking clue what you're trying to say with this editorial. Are you simply just trying to spark discussion? If so, than this is very counter-productive as many are already discussing it. Are you trying to express the opinion that TASM2 will be exactly like SM3, in a clear and concise manner? If you are, then you have failed miserably at it.

What I get from these three images are James Franco playing James Franco, a horribly miscast (and unnecessarily sympathetic) Sandman, and a severely underwritten Venom.

The main problems with Spider-Man 3 lie in how the characters were used. The entire first half of the film is pretty much devoted to Sandman's origin story, while Harry's entire character arc within the first two films is completely erased via amnesia (and we're forced to sit through a subplot in which Harry finds out all the crap he already learned in the first two films). Venom, who is one of Spider-Man's deadliest foes, is reduced to a poor man's Peter Parker having a temper tantrum. And then there's that random-ass subplot with the landlord, which has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the story.

@Netman

Wait, so Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker is a douche? Because Tobey Maguire's Peter is SO innocent, right? Nothing like good ole Pete inadvertently killing his best friend's father, giving up on his responsibilities as Spider-Man for whatever reason, guilting MJ out of marriage, AND pimp-slapping his own girlfriend after trying to make her jealous. Isn't Tobey Maguire's Peter such a nice guy?

This article was some what pointless. I'm pretty sure Sony's Spiderman films are always trying to up themselves and try and improve on there last film. I mean this time TASM 2 has two good writers and a proper director. Judging from the trailer the movie looks like it'll be good.

Not forgetting Marc Webb is pretty much not trying to over crowd or over complicate this movie. I mean he took out Mary Jane from TASM 2.

Batman Begins had four villains in it's film. The Dark Knight had three villains. Iron Man 3 had four. Thor: The Dark World had 3 villains.
