UPDATE: Speculation That Andrew Garfield Will Be In THE AVENGERS Begins...AGAIN

However, this time it's for the sequel! Andrew Garfield has been spotted in New York with a very big pile of The Avengers comic books featuring Thanos. A bit of light reading or research for Marvel Studios' planned sequel?

Here we go again! Before Marvel's The Avengers was released back in May, speculation was running rampant that Andrew Garfield's Peter Parker/Spider-Man would cameo in Joss Whedon's superhero ensemble. He didn't. However, the actor has now been spotted with something leading The Daily Mail to come to the conclusion that he may be swatting up for a role in the planned sequel to the most successful comic book movie ever. The fact that he's holding a bunch of comic books featuring Thanos could certainly lead one to come up with such a theory, and parties involved with both films have expressed interest in allowing Spider-Man to appear in a future The Avengers film despite the fact that the rights to the character are held by a different studio.

Seems unlikely, eh? However, Avi Arad sid recently get fan terribly excited with the declaration that, "If something like that happens, it's great for Disney, it's great for Sony. If the right story comes in..." With The Amazing Spider-Man being a hit with the majority of critics so far, a good couple of weeks at the box office could be all it takes to make this a reality. How about a cameo such as the one below? (taken from Mark Millar and Terry Dodson's Marvel Knights Spider-Man) Sound off with your thoughts below.

UPDATE: The following Tweet appears to debunk the speculation above, although it's a little strange for Marvel to make the effort to comment on something so seemingly insignificant...

Thats awesome! I like how the shield agent in the back is watching him for recruitment lol. It would be awesome tho to have spidey in the avengers because usually iron man is the smartass, but imaging a teenager among them and u have got some interesting character interactions. Cant wait!

I think Spider-Man has to be in The Avenger 2 in order to be as accepted as the Raimi Spider-Man was

I really can't care less about Spidey being in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It won't even be a big deal if he won't be joining The Avengers; I'd rather see the likes of Giant Man, Black Panther...or whoever. I really don't get all the fuss over the matter.

They should leave it alone, just focus on making sure we don't get another Iron Man 2.

Easter eggs like, Stark weapons and adamantium in Fantastic Four are fine. Cross over and you start to raise all sorts of questions

Wow, this is exactly like that time where Eva Mendez was spotted with a bunch of Avengers comics to research The Wasp and ended up playing her in The Av-- oh wait a minute, that turned out to be bullshit. The Daily Mail is not exactly a publication I'd call a reliable source.

Guys, I work in PR and this is such an obvious stunt. He has been told by the studio and his publicst, to walk about holding Avengers comics featuring Thanos, as a way to attract the fans of the Avengers movie. Its very badly excuted though, he has mulitple copies of the same comic and they are facing towards the camera, while he poses.

It's be great if Spidey had a small role in The Avengers 2 - for one thing it'd guarantee that audiences were even more pumped for this than Avengers. Even a cameo would be pretty cool.

@grif maybe The Amazing Spider-Man is set after The Avengers?
