5 Things The New SUICIDE SQUAD Trailer Reveals About The Mysterious Role Of 'The Joker'
The latest trailer for Suicide Squad featured some major revelations about The Joker, many of which you more than likely missed! Hit the jump for details on the Clown Prince of Crime's plans for Task Force X.
We may have seen three trailers for Suicide Squad, but much of the David Ayer helmed release remains a mystery to us. Who is the big bad and just how significant a role does The Joker have in the movie? It's that latter point which has really got me thinking, and while previous sneak peeks have teased his role here, it's the "Blitz" trailer released this past Sunday which finally goes some way in clearing up the Clown Prince of Crime's motivations. With so much going on though, these reveals were easy to miss!
That's why I've rounded up the five biggest revelations (and theories) about what exactly is going on with The Joker in Suicide Squad, and I think it's fair to say that the iconic Batman villain's role is no longer quite as hard to figure out as it once was. This is clearly going to be a pretty unique take on the character anyway - something we've known since that first official image was released - but make no mistake about it, Task Force X will meet their match when they face off with The Joker this August...
5. He Sacrifices Harley To Save Himself
Despite the fact that Harley Quinn is smitten with The Joker, their relationship is something of an abusive one, so him using his "sidekick" as a pawn while attempting to escape from Batman isn't that hard to believe. Looking at the trailer, it seems as if he somehow escapes from the car that the Batmobile is chasing down, leaving Harley to plummet into the water below and forcing Batman to choose between capturing him and letting Harley (who is technically an innocent given what the Clown Prince of Crime did to her) drown.
The Dark Knight clearly decides on the latter option, diving into the river in order to save her, something which leads to Harley's incarceration and perhaps explains why we've heard that she has a romantic relationship with Deadshot after The Joker betrays her.
4. He's Controlling Enchantress...
I'm going out on a limb here, but I believe that there's enough evidence in this trailer to safely assume that The Joker is the one pulling the strings and orchestrating this attack on Midway City. In the last look at the movie we had, henchman Jonny Frost (Jim Parrack) could be seen firing a minigun out the back of an aircraft, and piecing that together with this new footage seemingly confirms that he's the one responsible for shooting Task Force X out of the sky.
So, is The Joker there just to cause more chaos - he does love chaos - or because he's the one who has orchestrated this threat? I'm going to put my money on the latter, and while we'll probably have to wait until the movie is released to find out why, I may actually have a theory about that, so keep reading to find out what that is.
3. ...Because He Wants Harley Back
I'm going out on a limb here, but seeing as The Joker appears to have an obsession with Harley (why else would he transform her the way he does?), I wouldn't be surprised if whatever he's up to in Midway City is to try and get her back by his side. How he finds out about her involvement with Task Force X is hard to say, and while I can't deny that them being the one to be sent in to deal with this threat could just be coincidence, I think The Joker has a bigger gameplan than that.
Even if he did leave Harley to die, The Joker is a big enough control freak to want his sidekick back by his side no matter the cost, but will she end up going back to him? The trailer appears to show the villain making his escape after being defeated, so I have a feeling that she ends up choosing Task Force X over her Puddin'.
2. He's Doing Some Messed Up Stuff To Harleen Quinzel
The last couple of trailers for Suicide Squad have teased The Joker's involvement with transforming Harleen Quinzel into Harley Quinn, confirming not only that he throws her into the same vat in ACE Chemicals which changed him, but also that he tattoos her himself and uses electroconvulsive therapy on the one time Arkham Asylum psychiatrist to seemingly break her mind.
In this new look at the movie, we get to see Harleen chasing The Joker down on a motorcycle (a scene we know ends with him berating and slapping her thanks to set photos) and a shot of her falling backwards into that tank. The question is, was she pushed or does she jump willingly at this stage? Either way, we know The Joker goes in after her, so it's clear Suicide Squad will take their relationship to some messed up places.
1. What If The Joker Is Only In Flashbacks?
Ok, so I'm going to contradict myself here, but this is stil a valid theory. Other than that shot of The Joker in the tuxedo, every scene we see featuring the villain appears to take place in the past (that too could be from before Task Force X assembles, but seeing as his and Harley's adventures seem to end with that car crash, I'm not so sure).
That scene with the Clown Prince of Crime talking to one of his underlings in the nightclub confirms that it's the same location as the bar we've seen a scantily clad Harley dancing in in the past, and serves as yet another example of the pretty f***ed up dynamic between these two. The point is, we've yet to see The Joker in the same room as Task Force X, so don't be surprised if he's kept entirely out of the present day DC Films Universe until The Batman.
