Bruce Timm On Superhero Fans Complaining

It's fair to say ever since WB/DC wanted to try to do a DC movie universe similar to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, fans have done nothing but complain about movies that haven't even been out yet in a universe that is one movie deep. Click to hear what Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series) says about fans complaining.

Bruce Timm was one of the creative minds behind the DCAU and several DC animated films. He's a man who knows DC Comics in and out working on numerous DC characters. Currently there has been a lot of raged aimed towards DC's direction for films. While fans are alright with the casting and look of Henry Cavill's Superman, Ben Affleck's Batman and Jason Momoa's Aquaman, fans also are scratching their heads at casting Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as the Flash, and basically the entire costume design direction of Suicide Squad. Because a film about assassins, criminals, clowns, and killers should look colorful and happy. Ok maybe the clowns should be colorful but that's it. Bruce Timm comments on the fan's outrage relating it to outrage fans gave him while he was working on several DC cartoons.

I’ve had some experience with this, with people being resistant to change. Back when we did the Justice League show, the first season, fans weren’t loving it. The second season they loved it. We fixed all the problems with the show. They were totally on board. And then we pulled the rug out from under them and changed the show completely. We added like 50-some odd new characters and called it Justice League Unlimited. No more two-part episodes. I knew the minute we did it that everybody was going to be freaking out.

And I didn’t care. I figured they were going to watch the show anyways just so they’d have something to bitch about. And then, ultimately, they’ll love the show. We did the same thing with Batman Beyond. When we first mentioned, “Oh yeah, we’re going to do a futuristic teenage Batman,” those are three words that nobody ever wanted to hear in the same sentence. Again, everybody was really skeptical. But they ultimately embraced the show.

I am as intrigued as anybody else [to see Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn]. But, at the same time, I try to be impartial because I know I have more invested in it. And again, I’ve been on the other end, too. I mean we’ve taken characters that, in the comics, were really different and did something different with them in the animated shows. So I know what it’s like to take a character that you think is one thing and you make it something else.

Our version of Mr. Freeze was something that nobody had ever really done… that’s now become like the default setting for Mr. Freeze. But with a character like Harley, I always just have to remind myself: “Yeah, you know, I’ve taken liberties with other characters, so more power to them. They can do with that character whatever they want.” I just hope it’s good. That’s all I care about.

Bruce Timm does have a lot of good points. If should be noted a lot of the DC animated cartoons Timm has worked out don't completely follow the source material. In Superman: The Animated Series, Brainiac destroyed Krypton. In Justice League: The Animated Series we had John Stewart as the Green Lantern and not Hal Jordan. We also had Wally West as the Flash over Barry Allen and Hawkgirl over Aquaman. In Batman: The Animated Series Timm even had Batman and Batgirl hook up. What are your thoughts on this? Comment below, let me know. Props to JamesMann for posting this in the comments. Peace and remember...

In an alternate universe, the Justice League is a brutal force that maintains order on Earth. Superman is the son of General Zod, who was rocketed to Earth as a child and raised by a family of Mexican immigrants. Batman is Kirk Langstrom, a scientist who has inadvertently transformed himself into a vampire in an attempt to cure his cancer. Wonder Woman is Bekka, who was the bride of the New God Orion. However, the Justice League's unaccountability is challenged by the world's governments following the suspicious deaths of renowned scientists.

Mistake: Brainiac did not destroy Krypton. He only refrained from warning the people Krypton was about to explode just to save himself.

Like Timms New Justice league stuff. Thats Not Superman--the look is soo far and away that you cant even visualize that as being Clark.

I believe that's the point of Timm's new movie. It's an elseworld story plus that Superman is Zod's son not Jor-El so he shouldn't look like Clark. Hell it's not even Clark.

I think the fans have some right to complain, because it's their opinion. But I believe if Timm was helping shape the DCCU their complaining would go away. I personally believe though, the fans need to wait until after the next few movies, if they turn out bad then they have the right to get angry.

Correction to this article - Brainiac didn't destroy Krypton, he just hid the inevitable destruction from the Kryptonian council. It really was a genius retelling of Superman's origin. That show should have been as celebrated as Batman was - it just nailed the shit out of Superman.

No, we have every right to demand proper characterizations. We all wanted the classic versions of these characters, not unlike what MARVEL has largely been giving us (even though most of their characters are less classical). What we are being given are modern bastardizations that we are then asked to accept as the ultimate versions of these characters. If you screw up a cartoon, that isn't going to stand the test of time. It'll just go away. If you premier these characters in film haphazardly and recklessly then that is something we as fans have to live with for their rest of our lives. Even if they started strong (which they haven't) and then imploded, we would still hold them accountable. No one has forgotten "Batman & Robin", "The Quest for Peace", or "Catwoman". Garbage is garbage. We wanted them to care about these characters like we do and take them seriously, instead they are just railroading us with disappointment. MARVEL has better understood what creating film-adaptations of their characters is really about--it's an affirmation of the love and time we've spent with these characters. These adaptations should also be an affirmation of each character's unique history and the produces of these films should take great strides to balance all these aspects. Instead the people at DC like Zack Snyder have just done whatever the hell they wanted to and that's really insulting. This entire thing is just really insulting.

I will see "Dawn of Justice" in theatres but if it doesn't overcome my grievances I will not see "Suicide Squad" or any other film they are planning to vomit out any time soon. Some things I would be positive about seeing and what would make me want to come back even after being disappointed would be Hal Jordan as Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Dr. Fate, Supergirl, and Darkseid. I would re-evaluate my embargo (after "DOJ") if any of those five characters were involved, but I'm not expecting much (from "DOJ" or any of their other productions). From an objective emotionless standpoint, they have already failed to create the best amalgamations of these characters every step of the way. From an emotional standpoint, they have already failed to give me the movie I was dying to see. Now it's all about whether or not I can settle for what they've done and that is certainly not what MARVEL's films have provoked me to feel.

Yeah NOW they do. But remember They had Elektra, and Punisher and shitty Captain America, and before all of them Came Superman the Movie.

So piss off with your DC bashing, They have both had hit's and misses.

Come on fellas. At the end of the day, we're just talking about movies and comic books, not politics. This stuff isn't important. Having a favorite company is fine, but it's no reason to get personal. Both DC Comics and Marvel Comics are great. I'm excited for both. :)

Um... First of all, Elektra and Punisher were both great movies. Second, I meant Marvel Studios which started making movies back in 2008. And if you think I'm bashing DC by stating facts and stating my opinions regarding those facts than you are just a scumbag who doesn't like to hear other people's opinions. I am a DC fan (Batman, Superman, Justice League, etc.)--and their properties are being woefully mishandled. Little boy should get his panties out of a twist and learn that grown-ups can have differing opinions and still show respect for each other.

To all those praising Timm for what he is saying: Yeah, maybe he means it. He seems to be a pretty amiable guy. However, there is always the possibility that he has been told by DC to keep his mouth shut about any misgivings he might have about the movies because if he started to rail against them (while promoting his new film I might add) it might turn a lot of fans off to the DCCU. Maybe he isn't as passionate about these characters as we are, or maybe the reason he isn't barfing in interviews is because it's all business and he likes still being able to do his stuff. Either way it doesn't matter to me. People always have a right to be upset when it comes to stuff like this and just because someone like Timm comes forward and thumbs his nose doesn't mean their arguments suddenly have no merit. I have been very disappointed by everything I've been seeing but have kept mostly quiet because I'm not a whiner. I do believe that DC has a huge problem and I have a feeling the new movie is going to be "Man of Steel" all over again or worse and I am not looking forward to that. My threat is not empty though, I will not give more money to these people if my misgivings are only validated by the movie and I would encourage everyone else to do the same.
