SUICIDE SQUAD Director David Ayer Clears Up Some Of The Theories About A Big Joker/Harley Quinn Scene

The moment The Joker throws Harley Quinn from that helicopter has been debated for years now, but the filmmaker has finally cleared up whether the sequence was always supposed to play out the way it did...

Suicide Squad has generated plenty of debate since it was released in 2016, and fans have dissected many scenes in a bid to find out what David Ayer had planned for Task Force X and company before Warner Bros. ordered a long list of changes. One such scene saw The Joker throw Harley Quinn from the helicopter they escaped on.

In the theatrical cut, The Joker saved Harley's life after the chopper was shot down, but there have been rumours the Clown Prince of Crime actually threw her from that in the "Ayer Cut" after it became clear she wanted to go back and help Task Force X. That's only ever really been a rumour, but it was once that made sense given what few details were revealed about the movie.

Well, Ayer has now taken to Twitter to confirm that while, yes, The Joker did push Harley from the helicopter, his intention wasn't to kill her. This clears things up to some extent, but leaves us with plenty of questions, and doesn't explain how much Warner Bros. ultimately changed this sequence.

Why now? Why's he doing so much "damage control" now? Feels like he just wants to capitalize on the Snyder Cut, and exploit that momentum for his own gain. Dunno.

@tmp3 - Snyder was able to exploit moment for his own gain so why can't Ayers do the same?

@obredaan - I have nothing against directors wanting their version to be released, even if I'm not a fan of what they were trying to do, but I'm a bit more empathetic to Snyders situation than I am to Ayers, especially considering all things leading up to him leaving the project.

@AbidNaga - yeah. Its one thing for scenes to be taken out of the finished product but its another for what happened with justice league, where they replaced the director to essentially make a new movie. The only thing i can see is them giving us more joker, but clearly its just more of a side character.

Lol no he didn't. She clearly slips out of his arms. He even yells out "No!" when she falls. Ayer is so full of shit, it's scary.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Of course Joker pushes her...

...just not in the version seen by the public.

One of the many surprises left To be discovered in the Ayer Cut

@IronGenesis - Doubt.

And even if true, it wouldn't make any difference. In one version she falls by accident and Joker is worried for her. In the other version, Joker pushes her to save her life. Either way, both versions shows that Joker actually cares about Harley which is fundamentally wrong.

That's some pretty deep, complex, layered shit right there already. Gotta hand it to Ayer.

Clearly he thought that by pushing her she would bounce off the pavement a few times and then digivolve into Hulk and be just fine.

Hello there! Long time listener - first time caller over here.

I have a friend who worked on this production and I can tell you that Ayer is not full of shit. This is 100% true. The entire relationship of Harley and Joker was very much like the comments where Joker is emotionally manipulative. The helicopter scene dailies were reviewed by WB execs who freaked out at how dark and honestly abusive Joker was to Harley and immediately stepped in to reshoot shit.

For example: remember the quick shot in one of the Suicide Squad trailers where Joker looks half blown up and he says “bye bye”? I believe he’s holding a grenade or something. Anyways, that’s because he comes back to “claim” Harley and she decides she no longer wants Joker so he essentially says fine [frick] you I don’t need you (not in those exact words) and makes an escape.

A lot of stuff was reshot/shaped differently in tone in post. I’m not saying Ayer’s rushed script wasn’t without its big flaws (Enchantress lol) but he had bigger and better plans that got sidelined because how stupid WB/DC but also because how many people bitched about how dark BvS was. There’s more stories my friend told me about this production before the film even came out and it’s pretty hilarious. Leto was only referred to by Joker on set, the actor who played Killer Croc was supposedly a huge tool who had a posse on set that walked him around like he was a boxing champ, and that Margot was a total pro who was very courteous to everyone on set.

I would love to see Ayers original vision released. Do I think it will be incredible? No. Not unless they completely scrapped 1/3 of the movie and reshot it but that is never happening. Do I think it would be pretty good - especially compared to what we got? Absolutely.

@BornToLose - is this you Ayer?

Side note: I have no problem with what Ayer is doing I just thought that’d be funny to say

@Superspecialawesomeguy - it is. Obviously, a newly created account has zero rep in the comments section but I can assure you I’m 100% not full of shit and neither is Ayer... at least not with this SS stuff.

@BornToLose - Well tbf it's not like what you've said so far is entirely implausible, I'm just not going to take your word for it wholeheartedly. Although if I'm being honest I am intruged by what you've heard, so my apologies if I came off a little condescending lol.

@BornToLose - Hey listen, buddy. Don’t come out of nowhere with actual facts. People on this site enjoy speaking negatively about movies they hate with the conviction of the righteously aggrieved!!!

Stop being sensible and informed.

Now with that being said, welcome!!
