Ben Affleck Talks a Bit About Superman

While discussing his directorial efforts on The Town, Ben Affleck was asked by Hitfix.com about his rumored involvement with Man of Steel and why he turned that project down as a director.

Explains Affleck, "I have found for sure as an actor it is more important about what you say no to than what you say yes to. That movie, incidentally, is gonna do great and be great and has that nothing to do with me. In general, going forward, for me it’s about ‘What movie am I interested in making? What movie do I really connect to?’ If the director isn’t secure enough about it, the movie won’t work. Directing a movie takes a year or two years. You’ve got to love it as much on day 500 as you do on day one other wise it’s not going to work. So, It just means there is a forced judiciousness for me. Even the kind of thing I’d do as an actor for 10 weeks? I could try a character? I can’t do that as a director. I have to be part of a story I want to tell."

I'm glad he didn't accept Superman... I think he would have botched it... I like Ben Affleck but I just don't think he was right for Supes

Wouldn't have worked out. They would have had to base Superman out of Boston instead of Metropolis for Affleck to direct it.

I watched the town last night, it was really good but I still wouldn't want an unexperienced diretor taking on superman

I thought The Town was amazing and it would deserve the 'Best Picture' Oscar if not for Inception. good for him for not the taking the job though...a lot of directors would have said yes for the big paycheck alone. He wasn't interested, so he passed. Good on him I say. Pity though.

Guys, check out my Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D Fan Cast! Just click the link! :)

'afleck should be playing supes' WTF have you been sniffing glue?! ok, sorry you have right to your own opinion. But Afleck still sucks. The Town wasn't that great. Lets not forget this is the guy from Pearl Harbor and the box office hit Gigli :P.

Not seen any of his directing credits so I can't offer an opinion there. But I've always felt he is a poor actor so I question his artistic judgement.Nothing personal against him but I am relieved he has nothing to do with Superman :)

The Town was cool, not great. Affleck should stop puttin himself in his films though.

Affleck is a talented Actor, Director and Writer. I have no doubt if he had done Superman it would have been excellent. I think he could have done well playing the Man of Steel but he could also direct.

He was interviewed and had a chance to make a pitch. This has nothing to do with fanboy love it has to do with successful work.

I always thought that if they ever decide to do a Daredevil reboot that he would be a good choice to direct it.

I still can't believe WB even OFFERED it to him. I can't stand Affleck.

I pray WB doesn't [frick] up this new Superman film. They have [frick]ed up too much as it is

they have the best director for this particular movie. It will all come down to whether or not they have the right actors and the story. No more Clark running around the farm for an hour of the movie. Give us some action and give us a villain. Leave out Lex and Jimmy Olsen!!!!

I like Ben Affleck, both as a director and an actor. I even thought he was okay in Daredevil. There! I said it and I'm not taking it back! Sure he wasn't extraordinary at it, but he wasn't godawful either. Never could understand all the Affleck-hate...

Personally, I hated most of Dare Devil but I actually thought Afleck was not bad & the DD costume was damn-near perfect (imo -everyone else, not so much), it was just the writing & directing that were the problem there & the same is true for a lot of things of his that sucked (he really needs to stay away from Michale Bay). So far, as a director he's handeling himself well and he gets hudge props for walking away from a tempting "Pay Chek" (I had to say it) like "Superman". It's nice to see someone knowing their limitations rather than making that would likely suck & get in over their head & screw it up just for the cash (which is what most people would do - & that includes at least 99.9% of the people on this site, if given the offer). So kudos to Ben!

Like he said, I don't think he would've been right for the movie. His films tend to be darker. Edgy. That's the mistake that was made with Bryan Singer. He didn't get the more optimistic, upbeat aspect of the character and how to make him relevant in today's world. I think J.M. Strazynski could've been a good choice, but he's busy with the comics.

magic8@ I don't think he was offered the film. His name was just in the mix as one of the possible directors that was spoken to.

Toad4ever, I concur 100%. I thought it/he was solid. He gets bagged for no reason. Just shows how many people don't have opinion. They hate Ben just because a bunch of other people do.
