As the DCEU transitions into the DCU, a lot of projects have either been scrapped or find themselves in a state of flux. Among them is a Superman project Michael B. Jordan was executive producing for HBO Max, with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts scribes Darnell Metayer and Josh Peters tapped to write the project.
The TV series was going to focus on Val-Zod, a Black Kryptonian who became only the second superhero to hold the "Superman" mantle.
At the same time, J.J. Abrams and Ta-Nehisi Coates were said to be developing a movie about a Black Kal-El who crash lands on Earth in the 1930s, putting a new spin on the Man of Steel during a time when racial tensions were high. That's still thought to be moving ahead as an Elseworlds story, but where does that leave Val-Zod?
It was widely reported that Jordan would also star in the series, but there may not be room for the character in the new DCU, particularly with James Gunn's Superman: Legacy on the horizon.
During a recent red carpet interview for Creed III, the Black Panther star was asked about "[taking] on the DC role of Black Superman."
"Who said that? Who said that?" Jordan responds in the video below. "You said that. I didn’t say that. I don’t even know about no rumors about that one. Uh-huh. Wow."
With that, he walks away, and the actor is either playing seriously coy or genuinely doesn't know where the rumour came from. The trades were the ones that reported on plans for the series, though, and we're hoping it wasn't just another example of the previous regime at Warner Bros. throwing ideas at the wall to see what would stick.
Do you think Jordan would make for a good Superman?
