Did Guillermo del Toro Turn Down The Chance To Direct Superman Reboot?

In a recent interview with Deadline, the director hinted that he may have been offered the directors chair for the upcoming Superman reboot before deciding to helm At The Mountains of Madness...

The Coventry Telegraph have noticed something very interesting in a recent interview the Hellboy director did. After walking away from The Hobbit, Del Toro was seemingly offered the chance to direct the Christopher Nolan penned reboot (rumoured to be titled The Man of Steel) and here is both the question he was asked along with his slightly ambiguous answer!

As director, you could have gone to work for Warner Bros, doing a Wizard of Oz movie, and, I've heard, the studio wanted you to resurrect Superman.

"There were other projects" [he laughs].

While he doesn't confirm that he was offered the job, he certainly didn't deny it either. The fact he laughed when asked the question also seems to hint that he might have turned down Warner Bros! Sadly, it would seem that no one asked him about Doctor Strange but this is definitely an interesting bit of info. Do you think he would have been the right guy for the job? Share your thoughts in the usual place!

ABRAMS...HE DID WONDERS FOR STAR TREK, THE WAY HE REWORKED IT WITHOUT DAMAGING THE CHARACTERS WE KNOW AND LOVE DOING A LOOP AND CREATING AN ALTERNATE REALITY SO AS TO GIVE US NEW STORIES WITH THE SAME CHARACTERS...GENIUS PURE GENIUS..

some reason i feel Guillermo del Toro could do a interesting Captain Marvel movie.

@patriautism + Dynamo

J. J. Abrams is good but he needs to calm down with the lens flare LOL

if J. J. Abrams does Superman i hope he does not bring that storyline of Lex been a Kryptonian cause that was his idea before.

He actually admitted that Star Trek had way too many flares in the movie.
He said they were all natural flares though, and that he wanted the future to seem "too bright" to capture on camera.

I'm really curios of the tone & costume for this movie ...and if it'll be different from the previous films. Great find Josh!

Yeah, Krypton was instead in the midst of a civil war. Yet Kryptonite was still on earth. Wrap your mind around that.

@Anil Rickly
JJ's not directing MI4. But your right ST2 would make him unavailable. I don't think Snyder's cut out for Superman, plus he turned it down already.

Wait, why do you want Nolans off this project?
jazzman
jazzman - 9/17/2010, 4:32 PM
well the Nolans is just producing and writting the script they just need a director.

but heres something guys you forget that J.J. Abrams And Jonathan Nolan are working with each other for a TV series project. both of these guys must of talked about the Superman Reboot

Has it actually been confirmed that Jonah Nolan is writing Superman. So far all I've heard was the Goyer was writing it and Jonah was writing Batman.

Good he's perfect for At the Mountain of Madness, which will be much better than superman either way.

Oh that, well I think that they should let him do his work for Superman then use him in the JLA film.

P.s Tom Hardy doesn't really exude the Superman quality. Plus he's too short.

he would not be a bad director! He is very amazing!
and yeah jj Abrams would be perfect for it! He is my personal director choice for a FF reboot on MARVEL too!

Del Toro would not have been well suited to a movie like this IMO. I've always found it tough to pick directors though as, to name one example, who would have ever guessed that the guy who directed Elf would make two brilliant Iron Man films!? They just need to find someone that's capable of sticking to what makes the character great as well as delivering some truly epic action sequences...which is why Abrams is understandably a popular choice as he'd nail it. :)

Steven Spielburg for the Superman Reboot!!!

interestingly Spielberg was attached to the Superman movie in the 70s but had to pull out. Instead the job went to Richard Donner.

@Anil Rickly

why are u bothered with JLA for its no going to happen anyway WB took too long. its better for them to focus on doing solo movies for each characters anyway then later down the road u see a JLA movie. Green Lantern is not going to be in the same universe with the rest also it will be focus on his universe.

@Dynamo

yes its been confirm Jonah Nolan is writting the script with Goyer for the Superman reboot.

i also think Danny Boyle would be interesting director

To be honest, I think Del Toro could be (or could have been) a fine choice for MOS. It would have been extremely interesting to see his take on Superman IMO.

GUNSMITH @ Surely you have't heard of Smallville...? Oh wait! That's no Superman.
If Del Toro did this, it would probably be the baddest of ass. They're a bit silly about choosing a director now, but this is the reboot I more than certainly want. You guys are gonna be saying [frick] the reboot in a while at the smallest tidbit, but Supes deserves something truly excellent here. I'm sure the end result will be awesome.
WB: Just let Superman have a cool villain, hopefully Brainiac.
P.S., a man of steel indeed punches things. Soda machines are no exception.

Ignoring your attacking of the most legendary Superhero of all time, you do know that he isn't making Dr Strange either right?

Look. I understand artistic integrity, to a point. But with all the movies he has made just for his own enjoyment, why wouldn't he do something that would get him major recognition. It's like Ben Affleck said in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. You do the gay horse riding golf movie , then you do the money maker.

Which ones have you been reading? Ever read Birthright? Or how about Red Son? Or how about All Star Superman? You know the comic that won an Eisner Award?

Well considering he's doing Haunted Mansion and At the Mountains of Madness I doubt he has any time to focus on Strange. Also from what I hear he would've changed the character into something more occult aswell as not giving his signature costume.

I'm just curious but what was the last Superman comic that you've read? Alot of people seem to has pressumptions about the character without reading anything.

@Anil: Yeah, but they said that the next Batman and Superman are finishing their series, so by the time a JL movie gets off the ground, they can both have a fresh new series.
@Talon: Spielberg was my choice for Cap, but I can imagine he can do a good Superman movie, if he's a fan.

WB should call Del Toro back when they're ready to get the Mortal Kombat reboot off of the ground. That would be friggin Awesome.
