James McTeigue Is Still Talking Superman!

James McTeigue Is Still Talking Superman!

The V For Vendetta Director is still pitching his idea, and hinting at his involvement in a new Superman movie...

Yes, we were told that any Superman project was going to be put on the back burner by DC Entertainment for the mean time. When Alex Billington over at First Showing interviewed James McTeigue about his latest movie, Ninja Assassin, he slipped in a few Supes questions.

When asked if there was any truth to that rumor that he, or the Wachowskis, might be involved in another movie he said:

"Maybe some truth to… I've had some discussions, the Wachowskis to a lesser degree, but the Superman franchise is in a strange kind of place at the moment," McTeigue revealed. "I think they're still trying to work out the mechanics of how that can come together."

When asked what direction he would take IF he were to get the gig:

"I think I would be interested in doing it if they let me do it the way I wanted to do it. I would say that, if you take the Richard Donner Supermans and the last Superman [from Bryan Singer], I think that Superman is probably ripe for a bit of a change up. I think society has changed around the core idea of what Superman was."
"And I'm not saying you do the ubiquitous dark Superman, I'm not saying that… I'm just saying that I think there are some things that you could excise from the Superman mythology that people would get into it, if you took the world that he was in and changed that a bit, and maybe even project that into the future a bit. I think you don't really have to play into the origin story anymore. I think there's a whole bunch of things you could do to make that film more alive and exciting again."

This is not the first time McTeigue has talked about a darker Supes story. This dude talks way too much about a new movie to not be involved in some way. Let's hope DC get the finger out and get things moving sooner than they said they would.

I don't know if this guy would be the best thing for Superman. I still want Peter Jackson/ Neil Blomkap for the reboot.

The villain should be HULK with spikes... I mean Doomsday.
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 9/30/2009, 8:06 PM
No they really don't. What they need is a villain who can challenge Superman physically and mentally. If only there was a villain like that... oh wait, that would be Brainiac.

lol abomination = doomsday

gibbyblaylock - 9/30/2009, 8:12 PM
... yes, the villain should be a character that didn't exist until they introduced him for the sole purpose of killing Superman and saying nothing but Grrrr, etc. DOOMSDAY!

Superman should fight Doomsday, and then New Years Day, and then Arbor Day, and then Birthday. BTW, Doomsday's name is totally not lame.

InTylerWeTrust - 9/30/2009, 8:22 PM
Doomsday is just a lame character. He's one dimensional, boring, and one note. The only things that are good about him is that he's strong and cool looking. That's it.

doomsday might be one of the worst villains created in the history of time and space. i can't believe so many people want him in it.

Thats all a lot of people want to see. A 2 hour scrap. They don't care about anything like story or character, just a punch up and special effects so they can shout "awesome". Returns may have not had enough action, but I would take it any day over a movie with ONLY action. Why not just get Bay to make it.

CorndogBurglar - 9/30/2009, 8:32 PM
@ superdog

lmao

@ ror

yeah, returns could have been sooooo much better. but brainiac could be the perfect villain for what you mean. he would bring intellect as well as brawn. i want to see a city destroying fight. and yeah doomsday would bring that, but it would be so dull. at least with brainiac you can have a plot!
StrangerX

Ok I did mention a good story that I would like to see on screen, but noboody cares. Just like nobody is checking out my new article in fan fic.

Ror: Exactly. It seems like the thought process for some of the Doomsday supporters is "Cuz he wud b da bezt fite eva!!!!"

Maybe that's a bit exaggerated, but that seems to be the only reason some people want Doomsday. All they want is a 2 hour CGI fight.
superdog
superdog - 9/30/2009, 8:35 PM
i like returns. i watch it all the time. i hate bosworth in it though. and doomsday was a lame villian and it was a short straight forward story with no real drama or character arcs.......in that case, forget mctiegue, add in a few fart jokes and humping animals and get bay to direct it. then lee77 would have a nerdgasm to end all nerdgasm!!!!

Oh, I'm sure WB has a move under their sleeves, just wait for the days prior to loosing the franchise...

MarkCassidy - 9/30/2009, 8:42 PM
lol, maybe they could get Krypto to hump Lois's leg, and Ma Kent to go retarded and jump on Lex's back. Ahh i can see it now.

I'm not even saying a Doomsday fight wouldn't be great, I just don't think it would sustain a whole movie. I agree that Brainiac should be the way to go..if not, then Darkseid, but that will never happen I don't think. Too much added exposition with the New Gods and stuff.
superdog
superdog - 9/30/2009, 8:46 PM
braniac for sure. make lex president. have him in the background just being an annoyance. not even the bad guy really. just irking superman cause hes president. then bring in braniac and go from there. it would be great.
gibbyblaylock
gibbyblaylock - 9/30/2009, 8:47 PM
Doomsday would be cool like BANE in Batman and Robin was cool and totally not stupid and awful in every way.
(this is all sarcasm BTW in case you couldn't tell. I really hate Doomsday.)

Anyway, Doomsday rules. Just like X-force's Strong Guy or that other crappy, I mean totally original character Pitt.
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 9/30/2009, 8:54 PM
Not too sure on the idea of Lex as president (not this soon), but I want him in there. He should be a supporting character, owner of LexCorp, make him similar to the animated version of Lex.

This movie ain't getting greenlit till Green Lantern does well at the box office. And Green lantern wont get started until WB grows some balls. No comment on Flash or wonder woman

@ InTylerWeTrust82

Use the plot device of Lex as Pres to show Sups in a different universe if a parallel universe story is done.

What WB has had trouble in doing is bring thier movie characters all under one world. They could use the next Superman movie to do that. I know Nolan and Bale want Bats to stay solo but there is nothing saying that referances to Gotham can't be in other films.

Considering how often *cough cough* we get a Superman movie, they could put Braniac and Doomsday in, which could lend it some substance. Because I agree with Tyler and most of you guys about Doomsday being one dimensional and boring - but on the other hand he'd make for a hell of an action/fight sequence - which we've yet to really see with Supes and modern cg. Just use him as a tool, because he is a tool lol. The movie just needs to have a balance of plot and action as Rorshach points out.

@Superdog yeah, I like Returns moderately, but don't care much for Bosworth's OR even Spacey's performance (the guy's one of the greatest actors of this generation which goes without saying, but imo Singer made him campy in Returns). I don't think it deserves the trashing it gets. I want Routh back too - I think he's perfect.

@supermarioworldE you're probly right on that, but everything in me tells me Green Lantern's gonna hit pay dirt - Reynolds seems to be catching on fire. And WB is doing pretty well financially compared to many of these other companies. Goddamn, I would've liked to have seen Reynolds as The Flash though... I really don't know what's wrong with them, because The Flash has a great following, and just about as much potential for a great live action film as any of the others.

All I really know is McTeigue beats the hell out of Burton for the project. As does Routh with Cage lmao... I've said it before, but you guys know they actually seriously considered Dustin Hoffman AS Supes for the original movies - can you believe these jackasses. I love the guy as an actor, but not even forced perspective could've fixed that. Man it'd be cool if the writers found a way to integrate Nolan's universe with Green Lantern, Supes, and the others to make a mindblowing Justice League movie. The beancounters get their heads out of their asses - Then sometime around 2015 we get Avengers vs. Justice League, then in 2020 we get Marvel vs. DC civil War. Hey you never know - Stan Lee wants to be in Batman ;)

@48and2, A flash movie would be groundbreaking if done properly. Guess we'll have to wait till green lantern does well so it can open the floodgates to other major DC superheroes

Synder was approached for superman awhile ago but he said it was too big, called it the mother of superhero movies. my guess is he was too worried about ruining it. I wouldnt mind this guy doing it. He seems to be confident and doesnt wanna copy old stuf which i like. i hope he gets the job, he knows action

he cant f#ck it up more than it already has. Atleast he would have superman throw a PUNCH
ASSASSIN666
ASSASSIN666 - 9/30/2009, 10:59 PM
If that statement about Synder is true where did he get his balls big enough to film Watchmen? Yes Superman is the icon of all superheros, but Watchmen as a book earned it's place for being one of the greatest written works ever. There was most likely more pressure on him for Watchmen then any Superman movie ever made.
Ghola
Ghola - 9/30/2009, 11:42 PM
The only way I could see Doomsday in a supes movie would be to have him and Superman in a fght for the 1st 5-10 minutes then go into a rise of the supermen story. But of course that wouldnt work ... a Superman movie without alot of Superman.
ALmighty1080
ALmighty1080 - 10/1/2009, 12:25 AM
@Assasin666

Ya watchmen is a popular graphic novel to the comic book fans, beyond that, no one knows about it. I follow superhero stuff all the time and I honestly had no idea who/what Watchmen was until the movie was announced. Superman is on a completely different level than watchmen. Superman is like the first superhero ever created in most peoples minds. As much as i think synder could knock superman out of the park with his take on it, for some reason he doesnt wanna touch it. My guess is he isnt sure what to do, i mean Watchmen he just followeed the book page for page besides the end. Superman has 100s of stories compared to Watchmen's one story.

"He's a tricky one nowadays, isn't he? He's the king daddy of all comic-book heroes, but I'm just not sure how you sell that kind of earnestness to a sophisticated audience anymore." Quote from him, granted this was before watchmen so maybe he'd change his mind now.

I'd rather see the old Lex Luthor, mad scientist than the mad buisinessman Luthor.
brainiac would be cool start off with him stealing the city of Kandor.......
Fast forward someone discovering a spaceship, finds a city in a bottle and accidentily reboot Brainic......

First of all they need to get someone to do a script true to the character and full of pizazz! It needs to be a rip-roaring epic mega-movie with a downright incredible script!

That's going to be tough in Hollywood right now 'cause it seems to me most of the screenwriters there are just plain terrible writers! Without an amazing script no Director can do it right, that is for sure!!!
