Reasons to be Hopeful About "Man of Steel" (2013)

Editorial Opinion

In response to all the negativity and captious rhetoric surrounding Zach Snyder’s newest Superman offering on some of the discussion boards, I proffer this brief list so that Superman and film fans alike may take heart.

- First of all, there is a Superman movie being made!!!

- Christopher Nolan is involved. This of course does not guarantee anything in regard to story or story-quality, but Nolan is a good filmmaker and his record stands for itself. And - - if nothing else - - Nolan’s clout with WB will ensure that the studio will not mangle the final cut of this film. Nolan is also a cerebral director by his nature, and his involvement in this film should indicate something about “Man of Steel” will bring with it an interesting and new take on Superman.

- That the film has a delayed release date (2013) will give Snyder and others that much more time for effects, editing, scoring, etc. for this to be a very well made film. Remember how the makers of “Green Lantern” were apparently scrambling to get the film together on time? “Man of Steel” will not have this problem. The extra time is also great for building hype.

-Snyder has made clear he wants to show why Superman is the “granddaddy” of all superheroes…

- And on that note, Snyder and others have made it very clear that this incarnation of Superman is going to be a very physical one. Nothing conveys this more than the first official shot of Henry Cavill in the suit.

- Superman is FIGHTING in this movie. And the early indication is that he will be doing so a lot.

- Superman is fighting not one, but two villains (that we know of definitively) with powers comparable to his own. The potential for the subsequent action sequences is almost limitless and might make for the very finest in the genre.

- As evidenced by the aforementioned officially revealed still, Cavill is the most physically imposing Superman on film to date. The pictures of him on set as Superman and, just recently, as Clark make this quite clear.

- The cast for this movie is promising. Whether or not you agree with specific casting decisions, the overall cast is of high caliber. Michael Shannon as Zod looks to be especially promising.

- Superman is getting a new start. Superman has an estimable and (in my view) a truly great history and lore. But it is true that the character needs a bit of a revitalizing. In particular, the charisma of Christopher Reeve and the enduring allure of the 1978 Donner film has left the character in a bit of a nostalgic, post-greatness dip in the time since that first film. Which is to say that Superman is a character that – though respected – has been slowly on the decline in terms of popularity. Snyder and Nolan are right to recast the character in a new age on their own terms and show (remind) audiences everywhere what makes Superman truly SUPER.

There is nothing exciting about this film. Or atleast WB/DC has done nothing to show us that this will be different from the formers. Christopher Nolan is credited as a producer and for developing the story. Let's face it, David Goyer had more creative input, he's the comic book guy. Nolan more than likely offered his ideas for the thematic aspect and for his winning name to be attached. Zack Snyder handles CGI well, too bad we couldn't see a different villain for this. Right now, it looks like WB is buying up big name talent to ensure that this project becomes a success, but this production seems very forced [for $ of course] and not organically because they got an amazing story. I'm sure the action will be great and that Zod works, but as a Las Vegas resident, I'm betting that this film's gonna bomb.

I totally agree with this article. This new movie will be awesome. Can't wait to see it in 2013!

Yeah, Despero, as no one knows exactly what the story is, how are you in a position to make any judgement on it being forced and having or not having an amazing story? It might be a lousy story, who knows? All we know is that they've already filmed more fighting than SR had, and we all agree that's a good thing!

As anxious as I am to see Man of Steel knock the socks off those Marvel pretenders to his throne next summer, I have to tell myself to be patient. If anything was learned from Green Lantern, a movie that could have been so much better if it had not been produced in such a rushed manner, is to take all the time necessary. CGI requires so much more time than the traditional editing process, so you need to add a year to the release date of movies with it. GL was thrown out there before it was ready, both in terms of the script and special effects, a mistake that prevented it from being the great movie it could have been - not that all its flaws could have been fixed, but there would at least have been time to do so. Nolan knows to take his time, and that should give us all hope.

See I agree that Man of Steel is going to be awesome, but I don't agree with you comparing it to Green Lantern, or rather the contrast to it.

Your point of a quality filmmaker working on this movie, while correct, shouldn't be used as a reason. Don't forget that Green Lantern had Martin Campbell. He's made some sub-par films like Legend of Zorro, but he has had some great movies: the Mask of Zorro and Casino Royale.

The fact that it's physical shouldn't mean anything. Films like Green Lantern, Fantastic Four, and Elektra all had physical elements to it, with Green Lantern even going against someone whose powers overwhelmed his.

Casts in other films had potential too. Say what you will, but Ryan Reynolds is a quality actor. Was he right for Green Lantern? In my opinion, no, but he is still a good actor.

I know it sounds like I'm dragging on The Man of Steel, but I'm trying not to. I'm really excited for this movie - Superman is my second favorite superhero (first is ol' Webhead), and I want this to be the best damn movie ever, but I also don't think it's fair to contrast Man of Steel to Green Lantern.

I did not mean to directly compare the productions of "Man of Steel" and "Green Lantern" in a holistic sense. I was more commenting that a time crunch hindered the efforts of those making "Green Lantern." I wonder if the film might have been a bit better if it came out some months later. I guess we will never know. But anyway, with the extra time allotted to the makers of "Man of Steel", everyone involved will hopefully have more than enough time to do a thorough and complete job.

Having Nolan doesn't mean anything, but chance that it will be overly complicated to tell one damn thing.

i agree with you on every point except for him being the most physically imposing. I still think Dean Cain beats him out on that. but then again, i dont think the pic that was released, or the pics taken by the fans, show enough of his body or detail to show how tough he really looks.

I think that this movie is going to knock the socks off of us. Superman is an awesome hero and I don't think he has been given the proper treatment in movies even though the original Superman is a great film but it could have been better. This will be the true Superman film with lots of action and a good story and an all star cast.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY @GLfan @NOLANITE

-FORCED
"If they do not begin production on a Superman film by 2011, then the Shuster and Siegel estates will be able to sue for lost revenue on an unproduced film."

-THIS IS A GOYER STORY
"During story discussions for The Dark Knight Rises in 2008, David S. Goyer told Christopher Nolan his idea on how to present Superman in a modern context."

-BANKING OFF THE NOLAN NAME
"Impressed with Goyer's concept, Nolan pitched the idea to the studio, who hired Nolan to produce and Goyer to write based on the financial and critical success of The Dark Knight."

You see, I'm talking the facts, you're talking "fanboy".

Cool article.

The fact that they're using Zod - when they could have just as well forced the fan-favorite Brainiac into the script - means that they know what they're doing with this, story-wise. There's a plan.

And hell yeah, there's a Superman movie being made. It took since 2005 to get this feeling back.

I'm just happy Superman will be doing lots of fighting in this movie. I'm seriously [frick]ing fed the fu*k up with boring shit for Superman.

The donner shit was boring, SR was [frick]ing boring and lame...Smallville was boring too. Clark fought but nowhere near as often as he could have and he almost always defeated his opponents really fast and easily.

I wanna see THIS Superman actually struggle for a change. And no...I don't want him struggling against a giant rock again- [frick] THAT SHIT

@ClarkJohn27- You brought up a very good point- Nolan doesn't let WB ruin his films. He has kept his Batman films out of WB's grubby paws which is why those films are good. If he can just apply that same security to the Superman reboot, I think we'll be all good.

Goyer's not infallible, but he's pretty damn good where it counts, and he's never better than when paired up with Nolan. If only that were the case here... wait, it is!

I take comfort in the fact that Nolan has labored hard for his reputation and probably doesn't want to eff it up. He said it himself: "We have a fantastic story." You can chose to either ignore that statement, but considering it comes from someone who has never failed in that regard, I don't see why you would.

Nolan has made tons of GREAT films- Begins, TDK, Prestige and Inception and many others.

The fact that Nolan approved of the story and even helped Goyer with it gives me confidence in the story of the film...the fact that he CHOSE Snyder...a guy who has blown us away with "300" and "Watchmen"

This will be the film Superman has DESERVED for a long, long time. It isn't fair that other heroes get nice, up-to-date films. While Superman has been chained and bound to Donner in the 80's era. Snyder said that himself in one interview.

It is finally time to set Superman free.

@JackDexx- What is your issue with Nolan dude? Guy's a great director. If he made a lousy film then yeah i'd understand maybe he wouldn't be your top director. But come on man...Nolan has yet to make a "stinker" of a film.

"Inception" completely blew me away like no other.
LP4
LP4 - 8/29/2011, 7:52 PM
And it's funny too...I read soooo many comments from people who are worried about the movie because Snyder is the director...or Nolan is the producer. Come on people- Nolan's strength lies in deeply-layered/compelling stories. Snyder's strength is purely in ACTION and STUNNING VISUALS. Combining BOTH of those talents for Superman makes it a guaranteed success.

It's better than having Bryan Singer return...I still can't believe that asshole actually made a boring Superman film just so he could appeal to the devil-wears-prade FEMALE audience. [frick]ing stupid because that completely alienates the CORE fanbase. Because what we saw in 2006 was HARDLY a Superman film.

This is our chance to finally get a film WORTHY of the Man of Steel himself.

I mean...do you people REALLY want Singer, Dougherty and Harris to come back and take another STAB at Superman? As if killing his cinematic life in 2006 wasn't enough, do you people really want them to put the final kryptonite-nail in his coffin?

For 6 years Superman went without a film after Superman Returns and the reason being- WB had no idea what to do with Superman due to the lackluster feeling they and most fans got with SR. Talk all you want about its high-box office. Doesn't mean a thing. People will line up to see a Superman film because it's SUPERMAN. He's as legendary as Mickey Mouse. People will see a Superman film no matter how shitty it is because- EVERYONE loves Superman.

Superman Returns having a high box office really only proved how beloved Superman really truly is and just how untalented Singer is. Singer played it safe so he stuck to Donner, Williams, Reeve and even made it into a CHICK FLICK in a hope that it would be good. But really...why make SUPERMAN into a CHICK FLICK?? That's the single dumbest [frick]ing thing Singer could have ever done to his career.

I know I'm ranting again and I know people are going to hate on me here but my point is...Superman is in GOOD hands with Nolan and Snyder. I've complained about things with this film before but I NEVER complained about the people involved with the film. They are ALL talented and have their own strengths that all contribute to the magic of this movie.

Oh and I guarantee even those rare diehard Singer-fans will be yelping with excitement the MINUTE Superman starts punching his opponents and doing all the amazing feats is capable of.

Singer has yet to apologize to the fans for what he did to Superman. He stated in one interview that he admitted the film had its flaws but still refused to apologize.

Well that asshole can sit back and watch as Nolan and Snyder make the film he SHOULD HAVE MADE BACK IN 2006!

Don't mess with this icon. Please return to the roots of the original creator and the character rendered in the early Fleischer toons. The character struggled and although he struggled he won out. Over the years the character became too powerful and therefore had nothing to challenge him. Return him to the the original idea. Recently the character of Superman was best summed up in the song, "Superman, It Ain't Easy".
That song best summarized how the character dealt with his powers. Don't have him give up his US citizenship as some rumors out there say. Don't mess with his outfit. Just return him to his original character as best depicted in the Fleischer films.

@mrapp- Dude...they are trying to distance this film from EVERYTHING in the past.

I know it's hard to accept but believe it or not...it's actually a GOOD thing they changed his suit. They made it look more "alien" and more modern and it makes more sense. If an alien came to earth, you really think he'd be wearing red-undies on the outside? Yet...he's from this "advanced civilization" and he wears UNDIES on the outside?

Give me a break man. Look I love Superman. But i want him to finally have a great film.

Exactly!!! I cant fathom why people (a) Dont understand that, or (b) Do undersatnd it, but STILL want to go back and base M.O.S on Reeve, Donner, Fleischer etc... Its time for a NEW start, with a NEW direction, in a NEW suit...

Christopher Reeve won't be making any new Superman movies anytime soon. That movie was 33 years ago, it's time for everyone to get over it already and face the fact that this isn't the 1970's anymore. Nothing is more annoying that those lame fanboys living in the past. I like Christopher Reeve as much as the next guy but when it's all said and done, those movie kinda sucked.
