Robert Vaughn, whose Napoleon Solo on NBC's spy yarn The Man From U.N.C.L.E set TV's standard suavity and crimebusting cool, died today after a brief battle with acue leukemia. He was 83. His manager Matthew Sullivan confirmed the news to Deadline.
"Mr. Vaughn passed away with his family around him" Sullivan said
Vaughn's many list of credits include, the aforementioned The Man From U.N.C.L.E (1964-68) where he starred alongside David McCallum who played Illya Kuryakin. The series had a short lived spin-off The Girl From U.N.C.L.E starring Sophie Powers and a 2015 film directed by Guy Ritchie. Neither Vaughn nor McCallum appeared in the film version.
He also had an Oscar/Golden Globe nominated role in The Young Philadelphians (1959) and starred alongside Steve McQueen in Bullitt (1968) and The Magnificent Seven (1960). Vaughn was ultimately the final surviving member of the original Magnificent Seven group and went onto appear in a role similar to his role in Magnificent Seven in Battle Beyond The Stars (1980) which was also a remake of the Seven Samurai like Magnificent Seven was. He also appeared in the short lived Magnificent Seven TV series (1998-00). He didn't appear in the 2016 remake directed by Anton Fuqua.
Another memorable recent TV appearance was as con man Albert Stroller in the British series Hustle (2004-12) and also a role in the long running British soap opera Coronation Street.
In addition to The Young Philadelphians (1959), The Magnificent Seven (1960) and Bullitt (1968), Vaughn had memorable parts in popular pictures like The Towering Inferno (1974) again with McQueen, S.O.B. (1981) Superman III (1983) and, as the uncredited voice of Proetus IV, Demon Seed (1977).
Vaughn is survived by his wife Linda, son Cassidy and daughter Caitlin.
