Legendary film and TV director-producer Richard Donner has sadly passed away at the age of 91. Several outlets have now confirmed the news, though no cause of death has been revealed.

Born Richard Donald Schwartzberg in 1930, Donner began his career as an actor before moving on to television directing, working on shows such as Wanted: Dead or Alive, The Twilight Zone, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and The Fugitive. After some lower budget features, Donner got his big break with 1976’s The Omen, before going on to helm Superman: The Movie in 1978.

The filmmaker also worked on Superman II before leaving the project after a litigious dispute with producers Alexander and Ilya Salkind. Richard Lester replaced him, but much of Donner's footage remained in the film, and Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut was released on DVD in 2006.

Other notable Donner features include Ladyhawke, The Goonies, Lethal Weapon, Scrooged and his last film, 16 Blocks.

He is survived by his wife and producing partner Lauren Schuler Donner. All our thoughts go out to Donner's friends and family during this sad time.

He made us fear the Devil with The Omen, made us yearn for adventure with the Goonies, aspire to diplomatic immunity with Lethal Weapon and made us all believe a man could fly with Superman.

What a legendary career!
RIP Richard Donner

@ThePott - you can tell how great he is when he shot an incomplete Superman film that got split into 2 parts and is still regarded as 1 of the greatest film ever made.

Man responsible for the best superman so far

Wonder what it means for Lethal Weapon 5, will Gibson and Glover be willing to continue without him

Wonder what he would have done for Superman 3

The word “Legend” is thrown around extremely loosely. Richard Donner was and is without doubt a Legend.

Aw, man. R.I.P. Richard Donner. The guys really underrated as a director. With movies like Superman, Lethal Weapon series, Goonies, Omen, Maverick etc. he is really right up there with Spielberg as a great director with his own style.
This is funny story about him when they were making Goonies:

Not surprising but truly sad to hear, I have loved Superman 1 and 2 since discovering them for the first time in the early 2000’s. Not to mention other films like the Goonies that I’ve loved since I was little. He was a remarkable talent.

What a heck of a career. Superman, Lethal Weapon series, The Goonies, The Omen, not to mentioned one of the most famous episodes of the Twilight Zone.

I know they were planning a fifth Lethal Weapon, but they should really can it now. Besides, 4 ended on a great note.

The granddaddy of the CBM genre.

He directed the first ever Hollywood adaptation of a comic book with Superman: The Movie.

Him and and his wife helped usher in the modern resurgence of the genre by producing the X-Men films.

Truly a legend.

Godspeed, Dick.

He directed a bunch of movies in a bunch of genres, and whenever he did he created a new definitive example of that kind of movie. You can't make a buddy cop movie without bringing up Lethal Weapon. You can't make a superhero movie without bringing up Superman. You can't make ANOTHER version of A Christmas Carol without bringing up Scrooged. You can't make a kids on an adventure movie without bringing up The Goonies, and you DEFINITELY can't make a horror movie involving the Devil without bringing up The Omen.

He made one classic after another and everybody who ever worked with him loved him. He's gonna be seriously missed and his impact on cinema will live on forever.

R.I.P.

@AnthonyVonGeek - Lois Lane too. None of the movie or tv show lois lane's felt right to me and often felt like poor imitations of what donner and margot kidder crafted onscreen. donner was so damn good at crafting these 2 icons that no 1 has been able to "re-create" or "re-define" them
