SUPERMAN Director James Gunn Confirms He'll Miss Comic-Con; Reveals Some Specific (Surprising) Inspirations

SUPERMAN director and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has confirmed he won't be present for this year's San Diego Comic-Con. However, he's also shared some specific sources of inspiration for the movie...

DC Studios unveiled its DCU slate, titled "Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters," at the end of last January. James Gunn has since kept fans up to date on his social media platforms, but last year's WGA strikes definitely slowed down the DCU's momentum (delaying work on the likes of Waller and Lanterns, for example).

Fans are eager for another update, with the hope being that DC Studios might steal the show at this year's San Diego Comic-Con by sharing a first look at SUPERMAN along with more casting announcements and future projects.

While that may indeed happen, it sounds like Gunn won't be part of it.

Asked by a fan on Threads if he's excited about the annual event, the filmmaker simply responded with, "I will be shooting." Remember, Gunn recently suggested that Comic-Con and some sort of online presentation aren't his only options for a DCU slate update, so he may have something else planned.

In other news, the filmmaker has asked for his SUPERMAN inspirations beyond just Richard Donner's work. These are the images he chose to share, so read into them as you will...

"He's a big old galoot. He is a farm boy from Kansas who is very idealistic," Gunn previously said of his approach to the Man of Tomorrow. "His greatest weakness is that he'll never kill anybody, [and] doesn't want to hurt a living soul. And I like that sort of innate goodness about Superman as his defining characteristic."

Fellow DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran added, "[The reboot] focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice, and the American way. He is kind in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned."

SUPERMAN tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. Other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

SUPERMAN is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

@Doomsday8888 - "bastard knows how to tickle a Supes fan". Clearly he does. The last time I tried that it resulted in a restraining order. Again.😳

@Doomsday8888 - It's great when a director truly knows the character's roots, the supporting characters and villains. Bottom line: not many directors like James Gunn that know comic books.

Some of those inspirations…

If we actually get that scene of Superman saving a person from commiting suicide (and it’s done well) , I might actually ugly cry in the theater.

Also hell yes to him including the animated series , underrated imo!!.

@TheVisionary25 - The animated series is heck of underrated. Not sure why it doesn't get the same love as Batman, Spiderman and Xmen. I think we'll get something very similar to this suicide save. Giving his Superman a different type of save from the usual cat in tree or bank robbery.

@TheVisionary25 - Gunn knows how to give you an emotional sucker punch, so I really am expecting a scene like that. And even though it's not a sucker punch anymore by exoecting it, it sure as hell is gonna be emotional

Probably wants to avoid questions about all the DCEU flops last year and questions about "returning actors, continuity, and multiverse" lol.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - as much as I don't want it to be, it is for big announcements.

Always wanted to go to both and just sit and watch the crowd go wild at announcements. Don't know where to go know to be part of such an audience
