TMNT 2: Stephen Amell On How The Origin Of His 'Casey Jones' Differs To The Classic Version

A lot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans thought Arrow actor Stephen Amell was a slightly odd choice to play the dishevelled, unhinged vigilante, but he does seem to be a fan of the character at least - even if there will be some significant changes to his origin in this movie!

There have been several versions of Casey Jones featured in the various TMNT comics, animated series and movies over the years; but he is generally depicted as an unstable (though heroic), slightly delusional down-and-out viginlate who dedicates al of his time and energy to cracking street thugs' skulls. Well, it sounds like that won't quite be the case with the take on the character Stephen Amell will be playing in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. Here's what the Arrow star had to say to IGN when they quizzed him about it at SDCC over the weekend.

"It's certainly not your father's or your younger self's Casey Jones, but that's because we meet him at a very different time in his development. He is not the Casey Jones that a lot of comic fans have come to know and love. He is a guy with a job that lives in New York and loves hockey. When things go awry, [and] when he goes through the normal methods of what someone would do when they're [a] law-abiding citizen and he's met with laughter and scorn... he decides to take things into his own hands."

Sounds interesting anyway... but what do you guys make of those alterations? The sequel to last year's box office smash also stars Megan Fox, Will Arnett, Stephen Amell, Tyler Perry, and Laura Linney, and is currently shooting in New York. TMNT 2 (working title "Half-Shell") will be directed by David Green and produced by Michael Bay, Brad Fuller, and Andrew Form. The movie hits June 3rd, 2016.

so......good? that's a funny comment to make when trying to promote / build hype for something. you're telling fans that it's straight not what you expect, ostensibly want, to see.

@MexicanSuperman

No, No & NO!

Sorry, have to disagree there.

Practical effects / Prosthetics / Guys in Costumes >>>>>>>>>>>>> CGI any day for Turtles.

Although you did choose to use a pic from TMNT III with the added Green spots which were totally unnecessary, the costumes from TMNT or Secret of The Ooze are far better than anything with the CGI look.

Also, 90's Foot costumes >>>>>>>>>>>>> TMNT 2014 ones.

LOLOLOL @LuquePL! I have been saying the exact same thing to people. Absolutely awful looking Apocalypse & does bare resemblance to Ivan Ooze.

Should have gone with John Hennigan who did a pretty awesome portrayal of Casey Jones in Super Power Beat Down & some other web videos.

I'm fine with Casey Jones having an origin story told in the sequel, He has an origin in the comics too, But they never went deep into it.

There's a minority of TMNT fans out there who are upset about this, I'm a TMNT fan and I have no problem with this, I would like to see what Casey Jones was like before he became the vigilante that he is known for.

I grew up with Casey Eastwood and always viewed the cartoon version as a one dimensional cross between Wolverine and a street thug. Though Elias Koteas' version didn't get much in the way of character development it still was more realistic, and then there was the version form the 2000's cartoon and the TMNT CGI flick which both did justice to the character! This sounds like an even better though out version, and I look forward to what Amell will bring to the role.

As long as his job is being a bouncer at Torchy's, I'm okay with this.
It won't be, though. They'd never be that faithful to a TMNT comic.
I kinda guessed they'd be giving him some kinda Hockey related origin, what with all the set pics and such, which is fine, I suppose. They tried to do it before in the 1990 movie (well they hinted at it, when Casey talks to April about how he used to play professional hockey until he was injured) and they've made him play high school hockey in the recent cartoon and IDW comics.
I just don't get why they always feel the need to explain him. He's a vigilante, he hates crime and he's a goddamn lunatic. He's like Frank Miller's Batman, in a hockey mask. That's just who he is. No secret origin needed.
Also, there seems to be a lot of time spent on Earth in this movie. Are they gonna manage to squeeze in Dimension X and Krang into all of this or are they not doing that, anymore.
Man I'd love to see a Triceraton in this movie.

Hopefully, Raph meets Casey first and starts fighting crime with him on a night, before meeting any of the others.
