Chris Hemsworth Talks About Wielding Mjolnir In Thor

The Aussie actor talks briefly about picking up the mighty hammer of Thor and the fighting style that we will be seeing him use when he wields it in battle...

In this months edition of Empire the man who will be Thor, 26 year old Australian actor Chris Hemsworth, reveals the fighting style he used when "hammer fighting" in Kenneth Branagh's highly anticipated CBM..

"I'm an old hand with a hammer. I worked as a builder for a couple of years in Australia. But the hammer fighting is cool. We experimented with different styles, but none of them really worked. In the end, we developed our own style actually built around boxing. You know how Mike Tyson moves? Stance low to the ground, with big powerful hip movements."

Mike Tyson eh! Lets hope Thor doesn't take to biting his opponents ears off. But that does sound quite cool when you think about it, I just hope that along with the hammer hip fighting, we will see him throw Mjolnir about a bit too!

Thor is out on Thursday(Thor's day?) May 5th 2011. Here is the official synopsis..

The epic adventure Thor spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård. The film is slated for release in theaters domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.

The screenplay for Thor was penned by Mark Protosevich as well as Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz, and Don Payne. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

For anyone that cares, Ror's pun (Thorsday) is actually quite accurate. Many of the days of the week are riffs on old spellings which were named for the gods. Tuesday (Tyrsday), Wednesday (Wodinsday), and as mentioned Thursday (Thorsday).

Its where the name comes from apparently, I think its almost certainly the reason they are releasing the film on that day , although most advanced previews do happen on Thursdays anyway.

Tea, I'm approaching sober now:( Just had a few wee bank holiday bevies with my mates but they've all buggered off home now! Fancy a trip to Dublin to help me rip it up later?:)

@Spartan76 - Although the English calendar is based on the Roman calendar, when they translated the days of the week, they also translated from Roman gods to the Germanic gods. So English day names are based on Nordic gods:

Tuesday == Twi's Day == Tyr's Day
Wednesday == Wotan's Day == Odin's Day
Thursday == Thor's Day
Friday == Freya's Day

In Spanish (and Italian and French), the day names are based on the corresponding Roman gods and goddesses.

Tyr == God of War == Mars == Martes
Odin == Shapeshifter == Mercury == Miercoles
Thor == God of Storms == Jupiter (aka Jove) == Jueves
Freya == God of Love/Beauty == Venus == Viernes

Sorry about that. Brain dump. But, yeah, this movie should open on a Thursday.

I'm a quarter Norwegian and my dad was half.

I used to go with him to a Norwegian friend
of his at the local Norwegian settlement
where is his friend (Gunnar) lived. My dad's
mom was the Norwegian with the maiden-name
surname of Auren, a variant on Arn meaning,
eagle or eagle-warrior. Her first name was
Hilda. Her father came to America, as an orphan,
working his way as a cabin-boy on a Viking
cargo ship from Norway. They still called them
Viking ships back then my dad told me.

At their meeting hall they had the traditional
ornate TOR'S hammer, MJOLNIR, hanging on the
wall. It's different from Marvel Thor's hammer.

They also have a real Viking helmet and a huge
real Norse battleaxe in a glass case! Marvel's
Thor instantly came to mind as I checked out
this cool meeting room. I had never seen Thor's traditional
hammer before that.

I betcha Chris is going to look badass wielding
Mjolnir and swinging it around and throwing it
in battle irregardless of how his costume looks
in the concept paintings!

Original TOR'S hammer, MJOLNIR:

@ DDD - That's pretty interesting man. I find the Nordic mythology to be really cool and I bet that knowing your ancestors were part of what created that mythology is even cooler. I know you're a huge Marvel fan, so I bet you're super hyped up over this movie.
DDD
DDD - 6/6/2010, 9:23 PM
You betcha McLovin@!

I'm more hyped for Thor and I like Captain America
more as a character even!

Thor is so different from the other Marvel
characters. I'm positive it's gonna look awe-
inspiring when Chris as Thor starts usin' his
hammer!
DDD
DDD - 6/6/2010, 9:45 PM
That's so cool that Chris was a carpenter for awhile
cuz I was a carpenter contractor for half of my life!
So I've swung a hammer or two, too! lol

Now I design and build speaker cabinets for surround sound
home theater & pro speaker systems. I'm sort of
in the movie field with my speakers eventually being
used in theaters to play movies over. It's extremely
fun for me to help movies sound better at home and in the theater.

Funny thing is, they used to call me Thor when I
worked in construction cuz I was 6'6" with long reddish
hair and a red beard and they knew about
my Norwegian heritage! lol

So Chris knows his way around a hammer and I am a certain
as certain can be that with Shakespearean
director Kenneth Branagh directing and Chris in
them platform boots and weilding mighty MJOLNIR
that the Thor movie is gonna rock the theaters and
"BRING DOWN THE THUNDER!!!!

DDD@ I am a little curious as to the Mjolnir that you posted. Mjolnir never existed in actual Norse Mythology. It was created by Marvel in the Thor Comics. Is the image you posted a version that was created to look more "traditional" in style to fit more with Norse culture?
CyberViking2000
CyberViking2000 - 6/7/2010, 12:02 AM
@Ranger14

Where did you study up on Norse mythology?

Mjolnir (with two dots above the 'o' and with two l's as well) did exist in the old tales of Thor. There was even one specifically about Thor retrieving his hammer from some giants. He went with Loki and was disguised as Sif by a spell. The giant leader had the hammer and was demanding that Sif be his mate, or else. Once Thor was close enough, he grabbed the hammer and killed all of the giants.

Thor idols had his beard becoming Mjolnir as it went down from his chin. Mjolnir was also in more than one design, including a popular one at the time when Norsemen were being Christianized. It bore a strong resemblance to the Christian cross, so it helped them to transition more easily, as well as making the craftsmen very wealthy, since they were serving two markets with one product.
