Ray Stevenson Talks About His Thor Costume

An exclusive Thor interview from our Empire friends!

So what's after being a vigilante, transcend manhood and become an Asgardian God. Which is the route Actor Ray Stevenson is taking From Punisher to Volstagg.

Stevenson was cast recently as Volstagg The Valiant, a member of the Warriors Three (think the Jordanaires to the God of Thunder's Elvis), alongside Stuart Townsend and Tadanobu Asano. There could be one problem, though - Volstagg is, how do you say, on the large side and, with filming set to start in January, Stevenson has very little time to bargain bucket his way to a new and improved waistline.

Here's a portion of Empire's Exclusive, talking how his transformation to Volstagg would be:

...Empire caught up with him[Stevenson] recently and found that a solution is at hand, in the shape of a fat suit. "It's fantastic," said a beaming Stevenson. "I've tried the suit on, and what they've done is kind of sex him up: he's sort of slimmer but rounder."

We're not sure we're up for an exuberantly sexed-up Brian Blessed-alike, but Stevenson clarifies: "He's got every bit of that Falstaffian verve and vigour, and a bit of a beergut to suggest that enormous appetite, but he's not the sort of Weeble-shaped figure he is in the comics. He's Falstaff with muscles. I've got this amazing foam-injected undersuit that flexes with me. I can't wait!"

Thor is directed by that great Shakespearean thespian Kenneth Brannagh and stars Chris Hemsworth (as the titular character), Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Natalie Portman, and Idris Elba.

I can't wait. I think I'm the minority here when I say I enjoyed watching him as Punisher, because I still see him as Pullo from "Rome." And I think this part of Volstagg will be a great for him--he's perfect for it.

-access out. Godspeed!

Stevenson was good in Punisher: War Zone, it was just everything else around him was a festering pile of human excrement spattered on the putrefying corpse of a dead dog lying in a puddle of toxic waste in an alley full of offal behind a butcher shop nestled in a neighborhood where there are suspiciously no cats.

Pullo, baby.

@ grif I can understand that he is black guy playing who is supposedly the whitest of all asgardians. Maybe Kenneth thought that it would be fun to play with the character. I like the idea.

I'm with Access about him being Frank Castle. I LOVED Warzone. It was my favorite of the Punisher films. He was what Frank should have been in the other film. ((Yes I know that there was one more, but can we forget Dolph?))

I felt kinda weird when I heard that he was going to be Volstagg. I'm kinda digging it, now. I was already looking forward to this film, so there's not much else that can happen to make me look forward to it even more. Not unless Stark or Rhodes is set to show up in it.

Ive been visiting this site for donkeys now, and ive always read comments but never posted, but this movie has got me so hyped its unreal!
Its bound to have Stark in it, and Id love to see Iron Man, War Machine, Cap and Thor unite to stop the Hulk! That would be a kick ass movie! Then in the second movie Hulk is with them and they could fight any baddass along the way!
BTW Hello peeps :D

ah yes a fat suit. Not unlike the fake muscles they will no doubt put Hemsworth in.

grif has a point, and there's no racism involved. Depending on your point of view, the Heimdall casting the first and only foible to date.

Why is it a foible? Because Heimdall is Sif's brother. Sif is played by a white woman. So either Branagh knows that they are related, and he doesn't gove a crap or in his movie they are not going to be brother and sister. Either way, depending on your point of view it could easily be viewed as a screw up.

If Branagh was all about having a token black guy in the Norse Pantheon then why not pick someone that doesn't have a brother or sister running around? Like Balder the Brave? That would have been perfect. Or why not cast Sif as a black lady? There again, that would have made things make sense again.

But he didn't.

@ Brobous: I hear ya.

Personally I don't mind of they have a black Asgardian. I just would rather it not be Heimdall.

Even though they are not a member of Odin's direct family like Frigg or Loki, they both figure very prominantly in Asgardian society.
Sif is Thor's girl, and Asgards greatest female warrior. She is more powerful even than Tyr, the God of War. Heimdall is Asgard's guardian, and to that end he has a number of unique powers. From his position on Bifrost he can see all things and is said to be all knowing. For instance if one of the gods decides they want to know what Galactus is doing right now Heimdall has the power to look through the universe and see what Galactus is doing.

So anyway, if I was Branagh and I wanted to make living breathing live action versions of these characters, I would want to know all I can about them so I would know how to flesh them out. DETAILS like the familial relationship betweenthe two characters in question are just the kind of thing one would need to know about them in order to write about them.

So on this one issue either he doesn't care, hasn't done his homework, or both.

Anyway like Bropous said.. it's no deal breaker or anything. But it's curious. Most curious.

who gives a rats ass about putting a black guy in thor! just nit picking a stupidness...i understand that maybe they put a random black guy so that it doesnt look like a white dominated movie and you know what GOOD!! no one including me iz gunna care either way..he's not a mojor character and nobody besides people who view comic books as a religion and any slight deviation is an insult will care. in the past all movies were white dominated besides the odd few and even in some programmes the white people played the black characters. times have changed and the coin has flipped..as long as they dont do it to a major character no one gives a crap...like captain america played by will smith? an insult..John cena playing as Luke Cage? an insult, sum black guy playing an un important character? who cares
TheLivingWeapon
TheLivingWeapon - 12/11/2009, 8:16 AM
a comment that wont make me popular but thats my oppinion and i am right to an extent..only fan boys will care..no one else and it will not effect the movies success

i'm with the living weapon. Who cares this isn't a factual story. If black people have to accept Liz Taylor as Cleopatra then white people can damn sure accept a black Heimdal. Get over it.
BillyBlack
BillyBlack - 12/11/2009, 9:09 AM
I think it is the same basic gripe that came along when they cast Michael-Clarke Duncan to play Kingpin. It just isn't the character. Would it have been racist to ask MCD to wear white make up and blue contacts? Because that is what the character calls for? I think that would've been great actually, but people are waaay to PC and worried about sounding, looking, or being perceived as a racist to do something like that. All that said, I'm sure it won't effect the movie that much. But it's not a racist comment to say that a black guy playing a norse god is incorrect, that is a factual statement. Shiiiiiiiit Billy Black isn't even white enough to play a Norse God! ^_^

P.S. - DDD your new avatar is awesome!

Personally, I'm more happy they got a good actor for the role of Heimdall. For Volstagg, sounds like they're going for kind of a World's Strongest Man Competition look for him, which is good IMO. They're still going with the rotund thing, just more feasible for battle.

TheLivingWeapon
TheLivingWeapon - 12/11/2009, 10:45 AM
@BillyBlack- but it still boils down to...who cares? Michael Clark Duncan playing kingpin is understandable if people get a bit huffy bout it, but even the comics sumtimes feel the need to switch races of certain characters like Nick Fury and im sorry, the SLJ version of Nick fury is better, you can make all the snakes on a plane jokes all you like but thats why he is in iron man and the classic version isnt. Making a white person play the black panther would be impossible to understand because the whole origin of him revolves around africa and blackness. Certain races own certain characters, captain america owns a white guy and so forth. Stop being pouty over minor changes, Thor will be great..unless they put furr on his costume NOOOO god forbid lol (sarcasm)
BillyBlack

I'm not being "pouty" at all. In fact, if you actually read my entire post, you'd see I said it won't effect the movie that much. I was simply stating that this is very similar to that scenario, which it is. Your argument for Nick Fury would be valid. If Wilson Fisk was ever, in fact, portrayed as an african american IN THE COMICS. Did that happen? Did I miss something?

I also like your complete contradiction.

"Making a white person play the black panther would be impossible to understand because the whole origin of him revolves around africa and blackness. Certain races own certain characters"

Sooooo a Norse God being played by a Black man is different from an African King being played by a White man exactly.... how?

Maybe you should rethink your argument a little bit and understand where someone else is coming from before making assumptions.

Talontd
Talontd - 12/11/2009, 11:39 AM
Well I'm Black.........and I think it's stupid.

HEIMDALL is a NORSE GOD people, there is no way all those blond hair, blue eyed people were praying to a black man, not happening. In almost every religion when a God is depicted he is depicted in the image of his followers. THIS DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

I however, have absolutely no problem with Michael Clarke-Duncan being cast as KINGPIN because nothing about that CHARACTER defined him as being white. I think changes like that are good because when alot of these characters were created it would have meant a failure to draw them as black. But when you FORCE a change of race as they've done to HEIMDALL, with seemingly NO EXPLANATION as to how it's even POSSIBLE, it comes off purely as placation. THAT'S WRONG. And that pushes the day, when things like this won't even be discussed, further out......imo.

DARTHMULDER-

I wouldn't say that THELIVINGWEAPON is a "Race Baiter". We all get sensitive when issues close to our heart are being discussed, that's just natural. THELIVINGWEAPON contributes far more than just on racially charged threads.

The comparison to that Austrailian dude is unfair.

I know the guy your talking about, and yes, he's a douche. ;-)
StephenStrange
StephenStrange - 12/11/2009, 11:52 AM
You make very good points Talontd. And YOUR understanding of these matters are obviously well thought out and intellectual.

The only thing I want to say about that is that Asgard is much bigger than one city and one group of people.

There are many different tribes and peoples living in the "realm" of Asgard along with the Norse gods, and even though I have never heard of a black Asgardian it is at least possible. After all Thor's pal Hogun the Grim is supposed to be Asian looking. If you read his origin, before he joined the ranks of the Asgardian gods he was member of an Asian looking race that lived on the mountainous border lands on the edge of Asgard. His people were attacked and occupied by the armies of a Warlock. He met up with Thor, Fandral, and Volstag and together they defeated he Warlock.

So anyway, just because Vikings didn't know of any, that doesn't mean that NO Asgardians are black so that's a plausible reason for Branagh to go with black actors. But he didn't do it for that reason. He did it for the "forced diversity" you spoke of.

@darthmulder- look im not insulted by your comment and true say to what Talontd said yes i feel strongly about race issues (for reasons i wont say). BUT thats only with when it comes down to changing a race of a character that has no major importance is the reason why i say 'why not change it? maybe it could be better, no one will notice or care'

give me a character like Cap ap like i said before and make him black...then i will say how stupid it iz to change it and i will be up in arms with the rest of you
Talontd
Talontd - 12/11/2009, 12:11 PM
@DARTHMULDER

Very true, and admittedly I hadn't thought of that. But what you said before still holds true, HEIMDALLS' lineage is the problem. I'll admit i'm not very good with IRON MAN and THOR lore (was primarily an X-Men nut growing up), but even with my limited knowledge I know HEIMDALL and SIF are brother and sister, and if I remember correctly NORSE GODS. So even if all of ASGARD isn't based solely off NORSE mythology, THEY ARE. So why change him? Change HOGUN...wait, strike that, asians' are MORE under-represented than we are! Change someone else, but don't change one of the NORSE gods!

Blah.....I think we're starting to say the same thing. =)

BTW, race aside, what did you think of MCD as Kingpin. Personally, his was the only performance in that movie that made me buy the Blu-Ray. It was a mediocre film, but i really thought he OWNED that role!
