THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Star Christian Bale Reflects On People Ridiculing His Plans To Play A Serious Batman

Thor: Love and Thunder star Christian Bale looks back at his time playing Batman in The Dark Knight Trilogy, sharing his take on how those movies might have helped the Marvel Cinematic Universe expand.

Christian Bale first played the Caped Crusader in 2005's Batman Begins, and later reprised the role in The Dark Knight in 2008 and again one final time in 2012 for The Dark Knight Rises.

The actor is remembered as a great Bruce Wayne/Batman, though his overly gruff voice while suited up is still the subject of many a meme. Now, Bale has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor: Love and Thunder's Gorr the God Butcher, another serious role for a pretty serious actor.

Talking to The Washington Post, Bale reflected on the way his and Christopher Nolan's plans to deliver a different type of Batman (after the campy movies of the past) were initially ridiculed.

"I would [tell people] we’re going to sort of do Batman, but take him seriously. I had tons of people laugh at me and just say, 'Well, that’s just not going to work at all,'" he recalls. "So, it’s wonderful to be a part of a trilogy that proved those people wrong. I’m not certain if it kick-started [the MCU] but it certainly helped along the way."

The Dark Knight was released the same year as Iron Man, while The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises both came out in 2012. There's no denying that the trilogy's success helped the superhero movie genre, though, and it took Marvel Studios a while before they could rival the critical and commercial success of The Dark Knight Trilogy

A decade after the last of those movies was released, The Batman put the character back on the right track, though Warner Bros. plans to focus on multiple versions of the character moving forward (including the versions played by Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton).

However, we shouldn't bank on Bale returning based on recent comments from the actor.

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in theaters.

I think Batman Begins definitely marked a turn in the genre, although I'm not sure what the extent is of how it impacted later movies.

Anyway, for Batman specifically it couldn't get less serious after Batman & Robin, so it's kinda odd to me Begins was ridiculed. It could only go up from there.

@bkmeijer1 - "...it's kinda odd to me Begins was ridiculed."

It seems that way from a certain angle, but (and I suspect you know this) anytime there is a really large fanbase, there is a wide variety of preferences and expectations with many fans claiming these preferences and/or expectations.

So, you can't please everyone in these cases. I supposed, if there were only, let's say, ten fans, they may not have all of the same preferences and expectations, but the differences becomes more obvious the more fans there are, especially when the complaints are given to the people involved and/or posted online.

One of my favorite examples of what I thought was odd was, after watching James Bond films growing up, at the theater and home, there were a large number of fans (enough to get their complaints noticed) that had issues with Daniel's blonde hair (a preference).

I remember thinking at the time, if the fans can handle different "faces" (Sean, George, Roger, Timothy, and Pierce), why the F can't they handle different color hair? That, to me, is VERY odd. But I complaints can get more attention than compliments.

@bkmeijer1 - Batman Begins is one of the best origin movies ever made.

The Dark Knight Trilogy, Captain America trilogy and Avengers quartet are the gold standards in “franchises” for superhero’s.

@LSHF - it's definitely true the whole of the fanbase can't be pleased.

It's just that I think before Begins, CBMs weren't a main popular culture commodity yet, so the fanbase wasn't as big yet.

That said, the fans from the comics probably had opinions about it though. Even though that shouldn't even be a problem, considering how many wildly different stories we already got in the comics up until that point.

The Wolverine is one of the few trilogies that started off shitty, gradually got better, and ended with a masterpiece. It's basically a reverse trilogy.

My favorite scene in BB was from the gangster that threatened Bruce in front of the politicians, lawyers, judges, etc.

"I gotta hand it to ya kid- ya got balls."

Classic scene in a movie that's better than all but one comic book movie (NWH) 17 years later.

To be fair, I think one of the reasons Iron Man worked (and then the MCU as a whole, really) was them taking the Batman Begins idea of "okay, these characters, but what if in the REAL world"

I think then that one of the reasons the MCU continued to work, and TDKR disappointed some people, was both those franchises took that initial idea and went different directions with it. MCU dialed it back SLIGHTLY, allowing for the more magical/sci-fi stuff, where as Nolan went MORE grounded/gritty/real world.

Obviously this worked WONDERS for TDK (forever top tier film) but meant by the time TDKR came and they tried to do even SLIGHTLY more comic-inspired stuff, it just didn't feel like the super-grounded world fit it... that's my take anyway.

Anywho, really glad we have the Nolan trilogy & the MCU.

@SeanMPC - it’s also why Man of Steel is so good.
LSHF
LSHF - 7/8/2022, 8:45 AM
@thewanderer - Man of Steel is a film that I very much enjoyed the first time I watched it, and each time I watch it again, I pick up something from it that I didn't think about or notice before that explains more of why things happened and why characters did what they did. So, consequently, I get more out of the film and enjoy it more each time I watch it.

I never read his comic books, so I sincerely had zero preferences nor expectations as to how Superman should handle things, so the film did not disappoint me in any way.

@thewanderer - it's unbelievable how we never got a sequel. Had DC paced their storytelling, they'd be destroying phase 4 right now. I could imagine Hal Jordan going mad, Lex Luthor taking over the political arena while building a criminal empire, keeping Batman right where he is, Superman trying to help Bizarro, Booster Gold becoming to DC what Iron Man was in 08. Elseworlds I suppose...

@LSHF - I love the realistic take. Superman would absolutely be viewed as an alien threat to human way of life.
LSHF
LSHF - 7/8/2022, 9:53 AM
@thewanderer - Yes, there would be those today that (based on what little the public knew about his character in the first film) would of course fear for their lives, others would worship him, and then lots of in-between.

And the military powers of the world would never want to take their eyes off of him (as was also demonstrated at the end of the film).

People love jumping to conclusions and assuming things about subjects they know little to nothing about.

Silly people.

Anyway, I love that film.

@thewanderer - I'm a bit iffy on Man of Steel. It looks incredible, the world-building is great, and the the score is masterpiece-level... but I think they took the wrong lesson from the Dark Knight trilogy.

I agree that what works about it is "what if Superman in OUR world?" but they kind of ended up doing it with a Batman tone, instead of a Superman tone - hence why it feels off & some of the story choices don't quite click.

(And I'm not saying a Superman tone needs to be like the Donner films, but there's a tone that the comics nail perfectly sometimes, I think that's what it was missing. I think the DCEU would've been a lot more succesful if MoS had gotten the tone right.)

@SeanMPC - to each their own. IMO the tone of MoS is perfect.

DCEU failed for many other reasons.

Will always be my favourite trilogy of any superhero. Despite Rises complaints, on a whole it was amazing to see Batman as I have always wanted it. Back to the Future is my favourite non CBM trilogy

Greatest Batman ever! The mediocre reception that Thor Love and Thunder is getting proves Chris Nolan's approach is the best. People do not want the zippidy do slapstick...none of which ever reach a billion dollars. That is what makes the Dark Knight Trilogy the greatest ever and why WB is continuing to make a mistake by not building on it.
