During last weekend's San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios announced that Thunderbolts will be released in theaters on July 26, 2024. Needless to say, we anticipate this movie being a big deal for the MCU, picking up on plot threads that started unfurling when we met Valentina Allegra de Fontaine in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
The mysterious character is clearly assembling her own superhero team, with former Captain America, John Walker, and Yelena Belova among the first recruits.
Wyatt Russell played John in the aforementioned Disney+ series, and became U.S. Agent after "Val" recruited him to whatever organisation she's part of. While the actor recently played coy when asked about a possible MCU return, Thunderbolts finally being confirmed appears to have made Russell a little more confident about his chances of suiting up again.
"No, I’m still waiting," he initially responded when asked whether Marvel Studios has been in touch. "I know they’re doing it. I know that they’re planning it. I gotta imagine that there’s something in there for me."
"But yeah, until you get that true actual prompt, like, 'Okay, this is your start date. And this is when you’re coming, and this is when you rent your house, and this is when logistically you need to start setting up to do these things.' That’s when I shift my mindset to going to do that, you know?"
"Other than that, before you get that call, things can change on a dime; you never know."
While Sam Wilson is now wielding the shield as Captain America, the U.S. Government doesn't seem too happy about it, so it makes sense for them to promote their own Steve Rogers replacement in "U.S. Agent." With that in mind, we find it hard to believe Russell won't return, and production is unlikely to begin until after he finishes working on that MonsterVerse series.
