THE BOYS Has Surpassed Expectations, Becoming One Of The Most Watched Amazon Original Series

After two weeks, Amazon's dark and satirical superhero series, The Boys, has already become one of the most watched Amazon Original Series, setting up some pretty high expectations for the second season.

The Boys isn't your typical superhero show.

Based on the comic book series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, The Boys offers a dark and satirical approach to the superhero genre, which is all the rage right now thanks primarily to Marvel's ability to make the MCU mainstream. It's gruesome, it's raunchy, and it's also one of Amazon's most-watched series ever.

While specific viewer numbers have not been released, Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios, revealed that The Boys has surpassed the company's predictions.

“We are thrilled that The Boys have surpassed our predictions for viewing in its first two weeks, and has become one of our most watched Amazon Original series by our Prime Video customers,” Jennifer Salke said. “This creates great momentum and excitement for us as we get ready for season two.”

Amazon actually renewed The Boys for a second season before Season 1 premiered last month, so it's not like the company didn't have confidence in the series. It seems Amazon just didn't expect it to blow up as quickly as it did, though.

The Boys co-creator and executive producer Erik Kripke also shared his excitement for the series' performance, which he said is being used as motivation for Season 2.

"I’m so beyond thrilled with the response to Season 1. And mainly, it’s made me get my ass in gear and work even harder on Season 2," Kripke said. "I don’t want Season 2 to go bigger, I want it to go deeper. A more intense, more insane, more wrenching, more character-driven season. It’s my one and only goal to make Season 2 even better than Season 1."

The Boys isn't only being watched by a ton of people, it's also being enjoyed as well. Season 1 currently sits at an 81 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with an audience score of 94 percent. Many have praised the series' "willingness to engage in heavy, relevant themes," which is actually in line with what star Karl Urban said about the show.

“I think that [The Boys] is a great metaphor for modern celebrity culture in general," Urban told IGN. "You only have to look at the numerous celebrity scandals from Weinstein to Cosby to Spacey, and countless more individuals that society idolized, yet in truth were not what they appeared. And The Boys was ahead of its time in recognizing that and putting it into the framework of a superhero genre."

In a world where superheroes embrace the darker side of their massive celebrity and fame, The Boys centers on a group of vigilantes known informally as "the boys," who set out to take down corrupt superheroes with no more than blue collar grit and a willingness to fight dirty.

The Boys is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

I didn't finish it, it wasn't my cup of tea but I know most people loved it so I'm glad the turnout was good

@MyCoolYoung - they were doing a whole bunch of nothing in. It was another Superhero show where they didn’t use their superpowers that much.

@WruceBayne - It's a tv show, what did you expect? Movies have 100+ mil for a 2 hour film so they can afford all the vfx. TV shows usually have less than 30% of that budget & are required to make to stretch it out longer too. They have no choice but to choose character/story over anything else.

@WruceBayne - I think the intent was to be story driven and not rely on spectacle

@MyCoolYoung - but you like going on the articles about the show and let us know that it wasn't your cup of tea? okay

@WruceBayne - it was not a superhero show it is a show about the people who go after the supes. Now this is coming from a person who doesnt know a bit about the source, but i didnt go into the show thinking..."its called the boys, and the trailer shows the boys are going after supes, i bet it has lots of superheroes doing stuff in it!"

@Mrsinister - I can pretty much leave my opinion anywhere. I didn't bad mouth the show nor did I say the show was bad

@WruceBayne - i don't think the display of powers was ever the point. It's more of a commentary on superhero culture as well as celebrity culture. I just couldn't get into it

I´ve never heard about that cult and censored comic-book for it´s splicit contents but after finishing the first season I must said that it gives me a pleasant suprise

Who watches the WATCHMEN?
well there are THE BOYS watching the watchmen in this series. When people with superpowers are so unstoppable that can kill normal people and get away with "collateral damages" and all the perversions that they can imagine and nobody cares, a group resist against them.

Great casting with Carl Urban, Elisabeth Shue, Jack Quaid, Anthony Star, Erin Moriarty and Dominique McElligott amongst other great young actors...and great surprises as Simon Pegg, Billy Zane, Haley Joel Osment, Tara Reid and Seth Rogen

Great script and only 8 episodes.
Not so slow and boring as Umbrella Academy.
The final chapter and the end are astonishing

A must see and a fresh ice cream for this summer

@WruceBayne - It´s not "another" low budget superhero show.
They use their superpowers when it´s need for the story and special effects are cool

Please, watch it before give us your opinion.

@lvcl - I did watch it before I gave my opinion that’s how I know nothing happened in it. Everything super powered happen in the first 15 minutes of the the first episode and the last 10 minutes of the last episode. Oh wait, I forgot that A Train won a race and the Deep got his gills raped. You could’ve taken the superpowers out and had thee exact same show. Oh I almost forgot that Translucent stayed invisible... **Mind Blown**
Bottom line is that they shouldn’t have marketed it as an action based show. Have a good day.

Really? I watched the first episode and I liked it, but put it on hold because I want to re-watch mindhunter before S2 next week.

Yesssss!

I’m rewatching S1 this weekend. S2 looks incredible - best show from Netflix imo.

@regularmovieguy - it truly is. Easily among the finest television I've watched. Can't wait to see how they bring Manson to screen.

@RageDriver2401 - I'm debating whether I should rewatch. Its still pretty fresh in my head, most of the integral plot points and what not.

S2 does have a time jump.

@BlackBeltJones

Yeah, I don’t think I need a rewatch but I want to do it. It was pretty straightforward and I don’t think I’ve seen it since it premiered.

The girl’s gone this weekend so I have a ton of free time on my hands. Might catch ‘Crawl’ or ‘Hobbs and Shaw’ tonight.

I really enjoyed this show. Homelander is absolutely diabolical. To me this show is one of those adaptations where the deviations from the source material are just as good if not better. Less stuff just for the sake of shock factor for one.

@MarvelDCAllDay - The protrayal of Homelander was amazing.
That plane scene was so intense. Incredible!

I think its a bit overrated at the moment as an adaptation of the comic, but it is HIGHLY WATCHABLE and BINGE-ABLE (if that is even a word). Purely as a tv show, its quite entertaining.

"I don’t want Season 2 to go bigger, I want it to go deeper."

Season 1 was great (even though I'm told it's quite different from the comics), and their hearts are in the right place regarding season 2!
