Joseph Gilgun Talks Playing Cassidy The Vampire On PREACHER; Hints At Season 2's Plot Direction

As the first season of AMC's Preacher reaches its bloody conclusion this Sunday, Empire catches up with Joe Gilgun (Misfits, This is England) to chat about what's next for his character, Cassidy...

The first 10 episode of AMC's take on Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's Preacher have to be seen as a success overall, but they have been criticised for only very loosely adapting the source material, and taking a few too many liberties with the main characters. Its true that Jesse and Tulip turned out to be quite different from their comic book counterparts, but Cassidy is (pretty much) a spot on interpretation of the hard drinking Irish vampire we first met in Ennis' story.

In a new interview with Empire Magazine, Joseph Gilgun discusses his take on ol' Cass, and why it was necessary for the first season of the show to stray so far from the fast-paced nature of the first graphic novel, "Gone to Texas".

"I [frick]ing loved it, man. I really, really loved Preacher. I can't wait to go back. It's one of the best times I've had filming. I think for the first series, we've had to keep it stationary, so people can invest in the characters. We needed to cater for those who haven't read the comics. We've all been finding our feet in this initial series, man."

As we've already seen from the SDCC trailer that was released, the finale is going to begin to converge with the comics, and Gilgun suggests that'll continue into the second season.

"In the comics, which I think they're trying to stick to, the trio [Jesse, Tulip and Cassidy] sort of [frick] off on this quest for God. It's kind of an adventure where all three of them try to find out who they are and what it's all about. Which is the eternal question for everybody, I guess. [frick], it sounds corny, doesn't it?"

Have you guys been enjoying Preacher so far? Sound off below, and be sure to tune in for what's sure to be an eventful finale this Sunday.

@Inter4Life - He's really good in the role. I'm gonna have to check out the comic again. Picked it up years ago and it didn't really grab me.

@GammaSmasher71 - you're telling me, I'm looking everywhere for the comic now. I read it a few times, never got into, but the series is pushing me towards it.

Same thing with the walking dead (ended up liking the comic more)

@Inter4Life - I read the first book last month and couldn't put it down... I hope they follow it for season 2!

Preacher has been good so far. The biggest problem with the show isn't stepping away from the comics. It's the fact that each episode has different pacing and direction.

One episode builds up to this huge thing. The next is full of action and intrigue. The next after that is slow burn and filler. But all new shows find their footing by the end of season one if they're lucky enough to keep going.

I like the comics a lot better but it has been a fun show.

@exies7 - I'm hoping they adapt book 1 for season 2... Could really be epic. Start off season 2 like they start off the book, minus all the flashbacks. You could make a really great season out of that first book.

@Kman - yea, I feel like that's probably where they're going. It just seems like the events that set things in motion are different and how they've met, etc.

I don't mind. It's been a pretty good show.

@exies7 - I agree though there have been some things that are kind of weird to me too... But the show has been crazy so far

Never read the comic so I can't knock points off for not having "my version" of Jessie/Tulip but I've got to say I've enjoyed the hell out of the first 9 episodes. Cassidy is amazing and Quincannon makes me feel sick just looking at him (10x more so than Eugene!! who is awesome too lol, that backstory though :O . . .) a solid 8/10 for me so far. Great show.

@MjGrierson - Quincannon is friggin nasty in the book, but I never really cared much for the arc he's in in the books honestly. It really takes you out of the story having not much to do with the main story at all. That arc is also the last one before the books final arc. That being said, Haley is perfect in the role even if he is a bit more tame than his comic book counterpart

It'd been solid to good for me. Even though he's been hard to understand at times, Cassidy is great on this show.

Cassidy and Arseface are the only characters i like. This whole show was a mistake, i tried to be optimistic but the last few weeks were a complete slog and boring as fk. True Blood is a better adaptation to Preacher than this snoozefest.

This show has been a huge disappointment, they just ignored the comics for no reason, "Gone To Texas" would have made a perfect first season, but they decided to do their "own thing" instead, and their "own thing" just sucks, specially compared to the much superior original thing that they should have properly adapted.

The story is mostly completely different and so are the pacing, the tone and the characters, so why bothering to adapt a comic book if you are going to make something completely different?

"Banshee" was a much better "Preacher" than this show by far (Hood as Jesse pretending to be a sheriff un a small town, Anna as Tulip, Job as Cassidy and even there was a bad guy with a meat factory), I wish the people behind that show were the people making this for HBO or Cinemax. :-/
