AMC Renews THE WALKING DEAD For A Fifth Season

After more record breaking viewing figures for the fourth season of The Walking Dead, it should come as no surprise to learn that AMC - who lost one of their biggest hits when Breaking Bad ended earlier this month - have now renewed the series for a fifth year. Hit the jump for the press release!

New York – October 29, 2013 – AMC announced today that it has renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season. The number one show on television among adults 18-49, The Walking Dead returned for a fourth season earlier this month and the premiere episode set a new record for the series, delivering 20.2 million viewers, live+3, and 13.2 million adults 18-49, a new record for any non-sports cable telecast.

“We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever: The Walking Dead is renewed for a fifth season,” said Charlie Collier, AMC president. “This is a show that has erased traditional distinctions between cable and broadcast. Its expanding base of passionate fans has grown every season, most recently – and most notably – with the season four premiere earlier this month, which broke viewership records for the series and became the biggest non-sports telecast in cable history. On behalf of the incredible team on both sides of the camera, thank you to the fans and here’s to more Dead.”

For season five, Scott Gimple will return as the series’ showrunner along with executive producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, David Alpert, Greg Nicotero and Tom Luse. AMC also recently announced that it is developing a companion series to The Walking Dead, based on a new story and new characters from Robert Kirkman.

I'll listen to arguments about the inconsistent levels of writing, but if you think the acting is bad on this show you're out of you damn mind.

Season 4 has been good so far,

@Slave

The Governor is definitely coming back for Ricks group, but before that we'll see where he was before, what he did, his plan, who his mole is etc in 2 solo episodes.

Yeah that was pretty obvious. With Breaking Bad over, they're going to milk The Walking Dead for all it's worth. There's probably no good way to end the series but AMC is going to drag it on for at least 2 or 3 more seasons that it should. Enjoy this while it lasts, the show will become much much worse towards the end.

And that's coming from someone who's really enjoying the season so far. Can't deny that the writing is horrible though. The characters are ridiculously inconsistent, the Governor was/is one of the worst villains on TV right now, they constantly write themselves into corners...for a show that's so desperate for people to think that it's more about the living than the dead, it's funny how the best part of the show is the walkers.

Season 1 was great.
Seasons 2 and 3 were not that good at all. I was gonna give up.
Season 4 so far has been amazing. SO surprised that the show is making a comeback.

Im just nervous about the Govonor returning because he was such a terrible non-threatening joke of a villian. I hope season 4 isnt soaring with good storylines just to crash and burn when that tool comes back.

"There's probably no good way to end the series but AMC is going to drag it on for at least 2 or 3 more seasons that it should. Enjoy this while it lasts, the show will become much much worse towards the end."

So you're clairvoyant now eh...whatever dude.

You either enjoy the show or you don't but people like MAC who call people stupid for liking something he doesn't are one of the reasons society sucks. If you don't like it fine, but the writing isn't bad, it's because just like in real life, people do stupid things and make stupid decisions. So is it bad writing or are you just mad people on the show don't act exactly the way you want?

@CCR, There's nothing clairvoyant about that at all. Look around, most shows always stay on TV longer than they should. Breaking Bad is probably one of the very few exceptions. It's called making an educated guess based on the facts.

And re-read my comment again, there's not a single word that calls anyone else out for liking the show. Heck, I even said I like the show. You're making a big deal out of nothing.

As for the writing, look at reviews for the episodes, talk to well-educated and informed people who watch the show, the majority will say the writing stinks. Because it does. There's a reason the show has gone through so many different showrunners since it first aired. I'm not hating, just calling it as I (and many, many other people) see it.

But as for your last comment, there's a difference between characters acting like normal people in everyday life and making bad choices, and then there's characters who have been portrayed to act a certain way and turn around and do something completely out of the blue and out of character in order to conveniently advance the plot. The writers don't understand their own characters most of the time, they don't understand how people would react in real life, and they get away with it because people are too distracted by the amazing zombies to care.

I'm allowed to like the show and still see and call out the many flaws in it. That allows me to be a more informed viewer, rather than simply drinking in the show and proclaiming that it's 100% amazing when very few things are. And hopefully, if enough people see these flaws and point them out, it'll force the writers to get their act together and give us an even better show. "You either enjoy the show or you don't"...that's a really black and white way to look at things, and that's not true at all.

@SauronsBANE1

Wow you are one pretentious guy. "Well-educated and informed people"?!? You sound just like MAC but wording it more elegantly, lol. And yes, either you enjoy it or you don't...why would you watch something you don't enjoy? Unless you're an idiot.

So "liking" something and "enjoying" it are different things in your world? Ok....and you've never heard of people doing something "out of character" before??? There's a reason that is a phrase, because it happens. It's called free will, everybody has it. And you can never look into someone's mind and know them totally. Or is that another of your superhuman abilities? Lol

@CCR, You love taking select phrases way out of context in order to attack me personally, don't you? How exactly am I being pretentious? Because I write in coherent sentences?

I never acted like the words "liking" and "enjoying" mean two different things. They're called synonyms. Instead of saying "I like this. I also like this. I like this too", I threw in "enjoy" to mix it up a bit. AGAIN, making mountains out of mole hills.

And as I made painfully clear, you can like (also known as "enjoy") a show but still acknowledge the flaws in it. But you only like looking at a few sentences that helps your agenda and ignoring everything else I said.

And yes, characters that do things out of character is a real phrase. It's used to describe an extremely weak and poorly written action that characters do that goes COMPLETELY against what they've been established to be. The reason that phrase exists is so we can know when writers screw up.

@SauronsBAND1

The phrase exists because...nevermind, I've already explained it once. Show my and your comments to your well-educated and informed friends and they'll explain it to you.

@CCR, Again using carefully chosen, out of context phrases in order to get back at me. Excellent rebuttal of each of my points. Proved me wrong.
