Arrow Season 3, Episode 13 "Canaries"

VERTIGO (GUEST STAR PETER STORMARE) RETURNS AND PITS CANARY AGAINST BLACK CANARY — Oliver (Stephen Amell) is thrown by the changes within Team Arrow. He’s used to calling the shots but sees that the team has evolved in his absence and tensions quickly escalate in the lair. Oliver is furious that Laurel (Katie Cassidy) has been going out as the Black Canary and tells her to stop risking her life, but when Vertigo (guest star Peter Stormare) hits the streets again, Laurel goes against Oliver’s wishes and tracks down Vertigo who hits her with a full dose of the drug. Laurel’s biggest fears revolve around her sister Sara (guest star Caity Lotz) so the Vertigo causes her to hallucinate an epic fight between Canary and Black Canary. Meanwhile, Chase (guest star Austin Butler) surprises Thea (Willa Holland), and Roy (Colton Haynes) warns Thea to stay away from Malcolm (John Barrowman). Michael Schultz directed the episode written by Jake Coburn & Emilia Ortega Aldrich.

Seriously bad acting. No idea how these CW shows are so popular. It's pantomime stuff.

Hey @Rormachine Thank you for speaking up. I feel like each script is crafted by a teenage girl, or Dawsons Creek writer.

And to answer your question, DC content survives based on an optimistic fanbase, and the fact that it exists. Same reason the Xmen movies make money.

Both Canaries suck in this show but Laurel is easily worse. Still, I enjoy it for what it is.

The X-Men movies succeed because they are good movies, led by strong performances by talented actors.

@MercWithMouth Oh yea? I dunno. 3/7 ain't bad I guess..

I don't necessarily blame the actors. that girl who plays Sarah was in Mad Men, where she was actually good
CW must have really bad directors, or such a low budget that they can't afford to record better takes

@CorporateDOOM

Greg Berlanti actually wrote eight episodes of Dawson's Creek.

And I was surprised to learn Rob Thomas, creator/producer/writer of Party Down and Veronica Mars wrote two Dawson's Creek epis.

I would be pretty typical for this to be some kind of dream sequence. But maybe its Sara slightly insane from the Lazarus Pit???

5/7. Only bad ones were Origins and X3, and X3 was at least entertaining.

@imkennpowers and now they write for Arrow?

I don't think it's the actors either, Lotz was great in a horror movie called The Pact, and Cassidy was decent in that recent straight to DVD superhero movie The Scibbler. It's the terrible dialogue, direction and overall production of the CW. I just can't get into any show they produce..and yes, that includes the Flash! Good eps here and there but overall just not my cuppa tea.

It's the CW. Cheesy and cheap comes with the territory. I can enjoy the shows for what they are. Arrow has been becoming slightly overbearing, however. Hasn't been all that good save for the crossover episode with the Flash.

@CombatWombat

Agreed!

Arrow has used five directors on more than five episodes, but 13 one-episode directors.

Flash has used two directors on multiple episodes, but nine one-episode directors.

It would really benefit both series if WB/CW could find good directors for each series who know how and are able to get the best/most out of their casts. They'll be worth their salaries in the long-run by directing multiple episodes, developing working relationships with cast/crew to learn strengths, weaknesses, limitations, etc. and hopefully they'd be able to benefit/help the writing staff as well.

Why not hire Bruce Timm to write, produce and/or direct for Arrow and/or Flash?!? The man can write, he understands the genre and he knows a lot of these characters better than most. DC/WB need to offer Bruce Timm a contract/deal to write/produce/consult on Affleck's Batman movie(s) and other various DC film universe projects AND write/produce/direct for Arrow, Flash and/or other DCtv universe projects he'd be willing/interested to work on.

AOS started off with its share of cheese and silliness, but it's grown into a hell of a show, with strong performances and sharp, witty scripts. Basically, the opposite of the CW:)

I think what it is....is that I've seen so many CBM porn parodies, that these actors seem like Juilliard School graduates.
