SUPERMAN & LOIS Star Tyler Hoechlin Addresses The CW Series' Lack Of Connections To The Wider Arrowverse

Superman & Lois star Tyler Hoechlin has addressed the fact that the show never crosses over with the wider Arrowverse, suggesting he treats the series as a separate entity since Crisis on Infinite Earths.

Superman & Lois had a different feel to the rest of the DC TV shows from the start, with a cinematic style and tone that was a far cry from the often cartoonish vibe of The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow. Direct references to the "Arrowverse" have also been a rarity in the series, with Smallville and Metropolis free of any visits from familiar faces.

The Man of Steel himself, Tyler Hoechlin, recently appeared at a panel at Fan Expo Vancouver (via Screen Rant) and was asked by a fan about the lack of crossovers in the show.

"I would say there are so many different layers to that, especially for us last year having COVID. I know there were ideas of doing crossovers and they just got scrapped right away," the actor explained. "I mean even keeping your own production up and running was so difficult that it just got completely squashed."

"For me, knowing what Bitsie and I had done in the previous shows and how we had our infant child [before] coming into this world of having two teenagers, I just had to make sense in my mind how we got there and for me it was a clean slate," Hoechlin said, referring to how Crisis on Infinite Earths rewrote reality. "Because otherwise, I’d be asking questions 'What happened to our infant child?'"

"So for me, just to clarify and make it easier for me to get into what we were doing, I just cut it and started over," he continued. "So for us right now, just at least the way I’m approaching it, it is that for me the only memory I have as this Clark is that this has been my life with these guys and that’s just how I’m approaching it so who knows, time will tell with the rest."

It sounds like Hoechlin has moved on from his appearances as Superman in the Arrowverse (he debuted in Supergirl) and is treating Superman & Lois like a completely separate entity. There have been rumblings that the series might leave The CW and become an HBO Max exclusive, and while COVID likely stopped any planned crossovers early on, they might never come at this stage.

In many ways, the show has benefitted from not being beholden to what's going on elsewhere in The CW. As this Superman has already shared the screen with his fellow heroes, it's not as if that's something we've never gotten to see from Hoechlin's iteration of the Man of Tomorrow.

Superman & Lois season 2 is currently airing on The CW.

Already read it earlier and that is basically his own take as an actor until they bring in more familiar faces from the universe beyond just the always reliable Diggle, which was in itself a big enough testament of the connection. (His argument with Sam about why killing Superman was wrong because he fought beside him and knew he was the best among them is a literal reference to Crisis Part 5)

The final word is on the showrunner and he even confirmed in a TVLine interview they tried to include a reference to Kara earlier back in S1. Why do that if they're removed from the Arrowverse? Hell, why was Lois so casually explaining to Jonathan the mechanics behind the Multiverse when they were seeing John Henry's pictures in the RV in 1x08 unless she didn't went through Crisis as well?

Just a matter of when they feel ready to include more character in this still ongoing pandemic. Since it's been a decade since the Arrowverse began they could cook up a new shared adventure for Season 3.

@NinnesMBC - To be fair, it was shown that Lois doesn’t remember Crisis so she’d have learned about the multiverse in some new, unknown way in the history of this new Earth.

Josh, stay in your lane. You're writing about a topic that you clearly know little about.

I think it's for the best. in fact, DC as a whole works better when its stories are self contained, more recently we saw this with Peacemaker. that's how they should be differentiating themselves from what Marvel is doing.

@Spidey91 - A DC shared universe works in comics in animated series, in live action? it doesnt.
In live action, we just cant believe Batman live in the same universe as Superman or Wonder Woman...
That is why I think BvS/JL was always doomed to fail.
Marvel on the other hand was designed 60 years ago to work as a shared universe.

@TheHumanSpider2 - I think it depends on how Batman is done. Clearly Nolan’s wouldn’t have worked in a world with Superman or Wonder Woman, and it’s looking like Reeves’ will be similar. But I fully believed Affleck could exist in that world, and that he’s seen some weirder stuff in his career.

"We" who? "We" already accept that regular people exist in a world that has Kryptonians and Amazons with the civilians of Metropolis and such, and Batman isn't exactly a stretch.

Batman existing in a world that has Superman isn't hard to believe. It's harder to believe that Batman exists in a world that doesn't have forensic accountants.

It's just ridiculous that people are saying this means it's not in the arrowverse. Like, wtf? Do we really need them to specifically mention the other shoes to get the hint? This version of the character already appeared in the crossovers. Sure, he has differences about him, but a) it was explained in crisis just like all other changes, and b) even after crisis we got an appearance from diggle which ties into his new story that carries over to other shows.

Like, what more do you need?
dracula
dracula - 2/22/2022, 7:23 PM
Really

They already established Diggle

We need a Supergirl guest appearance just ignore what was done on her show and do a take that better fits this show’s tone with Melissa back and no other guest stars

Thats it, id rather this show not crossover outside of that

The old shows have fallen so far from what they once were

Superman and Lois is flying higher than the other show have ever before.

Wouldnt mind a star girl crossover, that show is close to being as good as the Superman and Lois

Surprised they didnt add in the cut photo cameo from Kara for the season 1 blu ray, the episodes are extended

This series pretty much takes place outside the CW after the Crisis event.
And it should, dont let my boy go even near that mess.

They have to move this series to HBO Max, and if they want to make a shared universe there (they shouldnt), have the movie being set in whatever shared universe James Gunn is planning on HBO Max.

I personally am glad this show is more of its own thing. That being said I know Maxwell Lord hasn't been in Supergirl since the beginning, but now that Supergirl is over, he should make a return as a Superman villain, for an episode or two.

@BlackIceJoe - He is another character that wasn't used too much post Supergirl S1 so I am not against seeing him get a Crisis make over.

Just because it's set i the Arrowverse doesn't it needs to crossover. As Robert Meyer Burnett said don't put ur universe before your characters and this show has shined without any major Arrowverse references besides Diggle showing up. I'm still for Tag Harris being a main character on Justice U though

I watched the first two episodes of season one and thought it was a bit silly in parts, mostly a lot of over acting. Anyone confirm if it improves or remains that way? I’ve been hearing people really love this show so I’d like to enjoy it.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 2/22/2022, 8:31 PM
@SamaelSaint - it definitely suffers a bit from the usual CW-isms (i.e. it's a bit overdramatic at times), but it definitely feels like it's punching a bit above the expected weight for a CW show. the family aspect feels actually really grounded, and unlike the other CW shows and their villain of the week formula, all the plot points in S&L actually tie back to one another in some way, which makes the show feel tighter from a writing perspective. the lesser episode count also makes for better effects, even though they're still TV-level.

@SamaelSaint - My brother did the same thing. He likes the early Arrowverse but checked out years ago and hasn't picked up Supes and Lois after those two first episodes. I tried talking him into watching more but he couldn't get past the family drama.

I enjoyed the first season a ton but I think I'm out now in season 2 after first 3 episodes cause now I have the complaint of forced CW teenager drama inside a family soap-drama now. And i simply don't like these characters anymore the way they are being written, I mean this is the first version of Lois, including same actor when on Supergirl, that I don't love at all, in fact I kinda really dislike this version. In all comic properties, besides batman, she's my favorite non-super
PhoenixBlade
PhoenixBlade - 2/23/2022, 12:35 PM
@WarMonkey - Oof. I’ll give it a shot nonetheless. The scene that sticks with me the most was the sons reactions to Clark lifting the car. They looked terrified, one looked like he was having a seizure. Then the way they got so angry. Definitely think the reaction would’ve been amazement and excitement. The anger would’ve developed over time, but I doubt they’d have never gotten angry at him not being around because he’s being Superman. Just had some poorly written/directed moments that took me out of it.
