HIGHLIGHTS
J. August Richards is playing a character named Michael Peterson.
Cobie Smulders cameo as Agent Maria Hill is confirmed.
Scavenged alien tech from the Chitauri is sold on the black market.

The first review for the pilot episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has surfaced online and it contains a few spoilers, manly the confirmation of Cobie Smulders' cameo (you can hear her voice in the promo) and the identity of J. August Richards character in the pilot episode. Specifics are avoided however, there's no definitive information on the series' villains over than the fact that alien technology left over from the Chitauri invasion is being sold on the black market. Sadly, it seems J. August Richards is not playing any specific character from the published pages of Marvel Comics but the review does highlight his performance as the best of the pilot. UPDATE: Apparently the character has appeared in a Marvel comic book but it is extremely obscure. The character debuted in "Slapstick #1."

"Whedon has found the perfect balance of Marvel and his trademark witty dialogue with S.H.I.E.L.D. The world is very Marvel, with callbacks and references littered throughout the episode, but the dialogue and ensemble delivers everything you love about Whedon.

In order to track down the hooded hero, Coulson (Clark Gregg) puts together a specialized mobile team – Agent Grant Ward, Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge). With the help of Skye, who is brought in by Coulson, the agents are able to learn more about Michael; how he got his powers and the threat he poses if gone unchecked.

With a strong cast and smart script, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. delivers a smart, action-packed thrill ride."

Grade – 9.0 [via Poptimal]

Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson's team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage; Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), expert pilot and martial artist; Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), brilliant engineer; and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge), genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker, Skye (Chloe Bennet).

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Marvel’s first television series, is from executive producers Joss Whedon (Marvel's The Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, who co-wrote the pilot (Dollhouse, Dr.Horrible's Sing-Along Blog). Jeffrey Bell (Angel, Alias) and Jeph Loeb (Smallville, Lost, Heroes) also serve as executive producers. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television."

Yep, it will continue to be bashed even after it comes out, but if you ask me Whedon has yet to disappoint and I doubt this will be different.

@Deadpoolwithcomicsans problems with most of those heroes is that you usually need a lot of special effects to do it right and that costs...Also by doing show about shield they can introduce way more marvel characters than if they would focus on one hero.

@MindRiot. No, anyone is allowed to hate the show..after they've seen it. but when its an article that's given a very good review to the pilot and all you do is talk trash about it even though you haven't seen it yet, then yes, the hater label can be attached.

J. August Richards is playing a character named Michael Peterson.

Sounds like he's a basic human, but is friends with Impossible Man, Rage (Elvin Haliday), Speedball (Darrion Grobe), Turbo (Mickey Musashi). In the comics he's in high school. His helped fight Dr. Yesterday

He's appeared in:
Slapstick#1-4 (November, 1992)
Marvel Comics Presents#159-163

I'm gonna go for a stretch and say he's a combination of a couple of different characters in the show.

Charlie2094- "How could they do a proper superhero tv series?? Unless you're on HBO, the budget required for that would be too much. Are you all forgetting this is Marvels FIRST ever tv show. They're entirely new to this, the TV division in entirely new."

I completely agree. SHIELD is a smart idea for a first show in the MCU because it can touch on anything they want it to. AIM, HYDRA, other side stories from the existing movies, any emerging low level heroes, etc. There's a lot of potential there. I think it looks like a fun show.

I'm a huge Marvel fan but it pisses me off that Whedon has access to the Marvel Universe but gives us some generic guy with powers. Why even bother then?

I'll watch but this sounds like Mutant X with a better budget.

I think they go with no-name characters or throw away charaters so that they can leave an open roster for any movies. Take an D, E, or F-list character and F' him up and no one cares. Take an A or B-list character and F' them up and everyone goes ape. Look at any X-man movie and my point is easly made.

I find it hilarious that people are complaining that the show is about SHIELD agents. We're getting 2 blockbuster films from Marvel every year and there's no way a TV show with actual superheroes would work budget wise, and if it was produced the effect would look like crap. Instead we're getting a character driven show set in the Marvel Universe produced by the guy who did the Avengers film. I don't see the problem.
