Ror Reviews: DAREDEVIL Season 1, Episode 1 - "Into The Ring"

All 13 episodes of Marvel's Daredevil series are now available on Netflix to binge on, but I've decided to restrict myself to one a week. Of course I may not stick to that, but for now I'll be giving my thoughts on the first episode only. Click on for my take on "Into The Ring"...

Review Opinion

Right from the off Daredevil establishes itself as a much more adult-orientated superhero show than we're used to seeing -- and I don't just mean because there's some violence and bad language. After a brief flashback to his childhood accident we cut to an adult Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) asking forgiveness from a priest for the beatings he's planning to dole out. Cox (so good he seems born for this role) delivers a brilliant monologue about how his pugilist father always had the "Devil in him", and let it out whenever he was in the ring. Matt knows he has that same propensity for violence, and even though it's directed at evil-doers as a means of release he still regrets its existence.

It's quite a brilliant scene, and makes it clear that Daredevil won't settle for the cheesy, ham-fisted attempts at depth we see all too regularly in certain other comic book-based TV shows (sorry CW fans).

From there we introduced to the supporting cast, and the plot begins to take shape. Elden Henson is instantly likeable as Foggy Nelson, and provides some comic relief... but unlike some other Marvel "sidekick" type characters, he's never annoying in the process. Deborah Ann Woll is also solid as Karen Page, though her only real purpose in this first episode is to serve as the victim. Vincent D'Onofrio doesn't actually appear as Wilson Fisk in this instalment, though his presence is most definitely felt and we do meet some of his cronies. These guys really are the worst of the worst (sex traffickers, child kidnappers, stereotypically grumpy scarred Russians), so when Murdock "let's the Devil out" it's understandable that he doesn't hold back.

The high level of production values are on display in pretty much every shot, and the exciting fight scenes are expertly choreographed. We expected this to be darker than anything we've seen from Marvel before but there are still some surprisingly graphic scenes -- a Watchmen style arm snap taking the prize. Even so, it still somehow seems to fit in with the larger Marvel Cinematic -- or in this case TV -- Universe, with a couple of references to the carnage that was inflicted upon New York on the first Avengers movie.

The episode concludes with a montage: the bad guys attacking the innocent while Murdock attacks a punching bag. Then, suited up on a rooftop he hears a child call for help. Mask down, back to work.

All-in-all I really don't have a single negative thing to say about "Into The Ring". Obviously we'll have to see if the quality is maintained as the series progresses, but it's hard to imagine any major missteps derailing this. An intense, powerful and engrossing beginning to the Man Without Fear's small-screen adventures.

This show is easily the best comicbook based show I've ever seen. I'm about 5 episodes in and just wow!!! Blown away at how perfectly it's all been put together so far.

Just finished watching. I loved it, very brutal and rough and going to watch the second episode now.
Give's me hope that one day that one of my favourite heroes The Punisher will get his own show and he would definitely fit into this world.
Also Charlie Cox was great as well, remember being unsure about his casting, but it is always best to wait until the finished product. Gives me hope for the others cast in roles who I am unsure about such as Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Jai Courtney as Kyle Reese.

I've watched the first two so far and I really like this a lot. I love the dark edge.

At times, it seemed to drag with drawn out dialogue, but I expect that to not be a problem later on.

Love the references to the fallout from the Chitauri attack. In one scene in the second episode, there is a poster with billing that says some fighter vs. Barton. Don't know if that was an easter egg or just coincidence.

Overall, I enjoyed it and I can't wait to binge the rest of the episodes over the weekend.

Ha, yeah I'm keeing the star rating for movies because although I loves this, you can't really rate one episode of a series the same way as a movie.

Comedian03 , I don't like CW shows... that's my opinion, and that's what a review is. AOS doesn't apply to what I'm talking about because I find it neither cheesy or ham fisted.

Quit sugarcoating this shit Ror, and answer the million dollar question....is this show as good as Chico and the Man?

I want Charlie Cox in Civil War, he nails Daredevil/Matt to a tee! Also an appearance in Spider-Man wouldn't hurt. :P

Just watched the first episode, and I think it's brilliant. I couldn't find anything negative about it at all and I'm so excited to keep watching!!
Marvel knows what its doing and I couldn't be happier with where it's heading!!
I would love to see Cox's DD in Civil War. That would be so perfect.

Daredevil is way better than Arrow and better than Flash. Based on acting and dialogue alone.

Line would've been just fine if you left out "sorry CW fans". I don't get why having to contrast these shows mean anything? Stop it.

That said, loved season one. I'll have to re watch it soon. Besides from the horrible suit the show is perfect.

Brutal... Bloody... Brilliant.

@AlexanderLykins I agree, sort of. I had one big problem with the ending to Ep. 4. None of that felt natural and for that particular scene it was just forcefully violent.

I wasn't sold on Cox in the first ep but he really grew on me through the 2nd and 3rd. The show is shaping up very well so far....now if only Foggy wasn't such an annoying douche monkey.

The performances for the most part are amazing, sometimes Fisk is a little too quirky for my liking. Cox was perfect casting. The action was outstanding, the choreographers need to be hired for the movies. These Netflix shows will indeed be something special. Perfect start, bring on Jessica Jones.

Just watched it. It was pretty good. That end montage made up for any problems I had though. That shit was epic.
