THE FALCON AND THE WINTER SOLDIER: Kevin Feige On That Big Power Broker Reveal And What Comes Next

Opinions were divided when it came to The Falcon and The Winter Soldier's Power Broker reveal, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has now shared his thoughts on that and where the story goes next...

When The Falcon and The Winter Soldier started teasing a mysterious Power Broker, speculation online started running rampant about who it could be. There were a lot of exciting suggestions, including Arnim Zola, General "Thunderbolt" Ross, and even Baron Zemo himself, but in the end, we learned that it was secretly Sharon Carter.

The response to that reveal was mixed, especially as her comic book counterpart is one of Captain America's closest allies and his main love interest.

During a recent interview with the D23 Inside Disney podcast, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opened up about the big Power Broker twist, and is clearly pleased that Emily VanCamp is being given the opportunity to shine in the MCU moving forward (which is definitely not a bad thing).

"Well, the Power Broker has been revealed, and what was fun about that is again, Emily is a spectacular actor, and we hadn't seen her for a long time," he explained. "She got the short end of the stick when it came to the events of [Captain America:] Civil War. She was sort of left out in the cold. It is interesting on how she evolves, and where she goes obviously remains to be seen, but the response to Madripoor and to her as the Power Broker was great."

Sure, not everyone was on board with Sharon's big character change, but it certainly leaves her in an interesting place. An argument can also be made that taking the former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent down a villainous route is going to be a vastly more interesting journey to follow than Sharon just being someone who pops up here and there to help out the heroes who forgot her.

It definitely sounds like there are future plans for Power Broker in the MCU, but time will tell where she next appears (we'd be willing to put good money on Captain America 4).

I didn't really mind the reveal, considering she did indeed got left out a lot before. Not the direction I expected her to go in, but I do wanna see where it leads (my guess is Armor Wars).

Also, if she's the Power Broker and Nigel made the new serum, then why did she let Zemo go in there? Not that surprising the ultimate anti-super power person is gonna shoot the guy that can create super powered people right?

@bkmeijer - Could be another mandarin twist where no one knows who the power broker is but there’s some figure head acting in their place

@PantherKing - I wouldn't mind that, as long as it ends the same way as that twist (which ruined the whole twist for me)

@bkmeijer - First Secret Invasion- she's a skrull. Then, because Feige likes her the real Sharon Carter is till alive and returns in Armor Wars..

@ElvenKingSlayer - on the one hand that would be a cool twist, but I'm not sure how much I would like it. Finally Sharon gets to be more than the neighbor ally, but then it turns out that Sharon is actually locked up and the real interesting Sharon we've been watching was someone else

@bkmeijer - I still think she felt "out of character" especially with that post credit. Who else to be a skrull? Or we might not need one established in the show kinda like Spider-woman was a skrull for some time?

I’m glad Feige acknowledged she was short changed in Civil war. Hopefully they do right by her character in the future.

She was sort of left out in the cold.

I mean, she was sort of left out in the cold in TFATWS too? Hence why a majority of fans felt her being revealed to be the Power Broker was… unearned?

Some shady phone calls and art gallery flexing didn’t cut it with her character development for me.

@Se4M4NSt4ine - yup. Plus if they were gonna just waste her into a villain by the end anyway, why not just make her the villain of the show?

@FunkyFeige - I don't think she's a full on villain. She obviously still has a soft spot for Falcon and Winter Soldier. She did what she had to do to survive, but I'm willing to bet that whoever she's working with (hopefully Skrulls) will want her to do something horrible and she'll refuse. Either that, or she is a Skrull herself.

She's not "evil". I really don't see her doing something that kills a bunch of innocent people.

@CorndogBurglar - I mean… the Power Broker was the one that organised a bunch of assassinations in the show as it was revealed in episode 3… pardon the French, but the Power Broker’s made out to be a real piece of shit.

I’m just going off what I’ve seen, not what I’m speculating…

@CorndogBurglar - Agreed. Her "beef" is with her government.

There was a large amount of backlash against this twist. I was hoping they would have the good sense to course correct but obviously not. Too bad, they've wasted a good actress on shoddy writing.

@JDL - They can still course correct very easily. This was something of a cliff hanger for her character.

The easy answer is she's a Skrull. But if they don't want to take that route, it would be very easy to have her turn on whoever she's working with when they ask her to do something terrible. She was doing what she had to do to survive in a messed up world that she was a fugitive in. I don't think she's outright evil.

@JDL - It's a total shame the way they have treated Sharon, from being the potential Cap's new love interest like in the comics to just forget about her and then bring her back as a villain when that makes absolutely no f*cking sense.

Also Steve looks like a total ***hole leaving her like that to go back with Peggy, he just did not give a **** about Sharon.

I think that I remember being... fine with the reveal? I don’t know- it’s been a little while since the show. But, hopefully, they redeem her- in writing, and in character.

Yeah whatever it’s fine . Sharon never got anything to do in these movies anyway why not see how it goes when she’s a villain

@ShimmyShimmyYA - Sounds good to me. I'm good with whatever they do.

The more picky I am, the less I enjoy things. I'm here to enjoy ride for what it is, not criticize it for what is is not.
