After almost a decade of being a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears that Jeremy Renner will finally be getting his own standalone film based on
Hawkeye.
According to reports, by
Variety, the studio has enlisted Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely to pen the script. The writers are known for writing each installment of the
Captain America trilogy,
Thor: The Dark World, the upcoming
Avengers: Infinity War as well as its untitled sequel.
The lead actor, who's been a part of the cinematic universe since
Thor, was quick to respond to the news. When asked what he'd like to see in the film, whilst promoting his upcoming comedy
Tag, Renner
had this to say:
It all comes down to the content, and really how the puppeteers at Marvel can manifest a story that's worthy of a solo movie. Not sure what that is, or how that is, but I'm confident they can do whatever they want, if they want to do it. And I'd be game.
Variety's report cautions that the standalone film is still in the very early stages of development and has yet-to receive the greenlight, but since Renner has had a solo film in his contract since the start and has been adamant about getting it made before he gets too old,
stating in the past in regards to the film:
Just don’t wait too long! I don’t want to be in my 50s in tights.
It wouldn't be a stretch to assume that the long-gestating film will be apart of Marvel's yet-to-be announced Phase 4 slate, alongside the
Black Widow solo movie which was also recently green-lit. Perhaps, with 2020's slots taken, we'll see the
Hawkeye solo film as soon as 2021.
What do you think about this news? Are you happy that Hawkeye will finally be getting his own standalone film? If you are, well, that's a shame.
