Following that excellent season finale of Moon Knight on Wednesday, we caught up with director Mohamed Diab and producer Grant Curtis to talk about all the biggest moments, including that jaw-dropping post-credits sequence that has been dominating conversation across the interwebs.
The final moments reveal that Khonshu (F. Murray Abraham) is still very much in business, and we get the big moment we've been waiting for as the show confirms that he's actually been working with Jake Lockley (Oscar Isaac) all this time. Marc Spector's most ruthless persona then took out Arthur Harrow (Ethan Hawke) before the credits began to roll.
All season long, fans have suspected that Lockley had been seizing control every now and again, most prominently during an early scene in episode five. After talking to Curtis, he confirmed suspicions that Lockley had indeed been part of the season without us ever realizing.
"Well, as you can imagine, from seeing all six episodes, Jake is peppered throughout the show, and his presence is peppered throughout the show, but it was one of those things when we talked about, you know, Mark and Steven’s most satisfying emotional arc. It was one of those things when we started to look at how Jake Lockley plays into that.
It just seemed like emotionally, narratively, that brought their journey full circle, but also, hinted at potential things to come. So, it was never like, from day one, when we were sitting the writers' room, we never said we have to end with Jake Lockley. However, once that question, once that possibility was put forth in the writers' room, we realized that was a pretty good North Star to be shooting towards for the end of the show and it naturally fell into place. I think the audience likes finally seen a little bit of Jake, and seeing what we hinted at in the previous five episodes."
As for why we didn't see more Jake or get a moment where Marc and Steven discover their body's third co-inhabitant, director Mohamed Diab revealed that they did make an attempt to incorporate him before realizing the story was a little getting too busy with three leading characters.
"There was lots of development. I think Jeremy Slater and his team thought we should focus on the two of them first, because with Jake, it could be overwhelming, and you want to focus on the two characters and give them the time that they need.
And actually, when we started, we tried putting Jake in, but it felt exactly like what Jeremy said, and it felt like it was too much, but right now, I think we found the perfect balance when he’s seized control and everyone is missing them. Everyone is talking about Jake, and then, you open the door for another story to be told. I feel like one day when there's an expansion, if there is an extension for that story, it should be Jake’s story at the center."
