Elizabeth Olsen Seemingly Casts Doubt On Scarlet Witch Return: "I Just Need Other Characters In My Life"

We had all assumed it was only a matter of time before Elizabeth Olsen reprised her role as the Scarlet Witch in the MCU, but the WandaVision star has cast doubt on her return in a recent interview...

Although the Scarlet Witch did appear to meet her (temporary) end after a pretty definitive heel turn in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, it was generally assumed that it'd only be a matter of time before we saw the powerful Avenger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again.

Elizabeth Olsen has spoken optimistically about reprising the role in the past, but in a recent interview with The Times of London (conducted pre-strike), the WandaVision star sounded a lot less certain about stepping into Wanda Maximoff's shoes again.

"Specifically in the last four years, my output has been Marvel,” Olsen replied when asked about her post-MCU career choices. “I don’t want… it’s not that I don’t want to be associated as just this character. But I really feel like I need to be building other parts back up for balance. I so much want to do films right now. And I hope some of them come together in the way I feel like they can. But yeah, that’s something that I need. I just need other characters in my life. There’s no longevity in one character.”

“Wind River and Ingrid Goes West were films that I was very proud to have selected and they were so different and you can’t compare them,” she added. “So I just want more of that in my life just because I get satisfaction from the variation.”

While this obviously shouldn't be taken as confirmation that Olsen is done as the Scarlet Witch, it certainly sounds like she intends to bid farewell to the character fairly soon.

Olsen has previously expressed interest in exploring "the whole mutant thing," and there are rumors that Wanda will factor into Deadpool 3. We won't get into specifics just in case these details do turn out to be accurate, but it sounds like the Scarlet Witch will be at least partially responsible for mutants being introduced to the MCU.

If Olsen doesn't return for at least one more adventure with the Merc With a Mouth, she will likely appear in the planned Vision Quest Disney+ series, and we'd say there's a pretty good chance she will be back in action for either Avengers: The Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars.

What do you make of Olsen's comments? Does it sound like she's thinking about stepping away from the Scarlet Witch and the MCU? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place.

There’s no longevity in one character? Tell that to Mariska Hargitay or Ellen Pompeo.

The mcu is an easy paycheck, Stay for too long and it's all you have. Unless if you're RDJ lol nobody does these movies to "challenge themselves" with "complex characters"

That's not exactly what she says, best to not read between the lines here.

I don't get this notion that an actor needs to have multiple roles and does not want to be tied to one role. Why not? Especially if that role gives them the financial rewards and exposure they would not have had otherwise, and is so populra it will carry them through the latter years of their career. Part of me thinks that an actor's agent at some point tell these actors to say this in public so as to strengthen their negotiating hand when their contract is up. Every actor says essentially the same thing from Christan Bale and Robert Downey Jr. to Chris Evans and Hugh Jackman only for them to eventually return to the role when they do not do well pursuing other opportunities or the studio ponies up more money.

@Forthas - Money. If they are only ever seen as that character then their earning potential goes down as casting directors pass them over since they only think of them for that one kind of characters. RDJ and Christian Bale had already established that before taking their toles, most people in the MCU were made by their roles. It’s the classic curse of type casting

sometimes it’s DEFINITELY for negotiating purposes. But more often than not, think about it. Some of them got into acting because they liked acting. They like exploring a character then moving on and doing something different. The intrigue and excitement of money and fame can wear off very quickly for those who actually care about doing this for more than a paycheck.

Lizzie Olsen, Robert Pattinson, and many others face this problem. Once you’ve done the big franchise IP gig a few times, it becomes stale. The money isn’t enough. It’s not fulfilling.

Pretty standard stuff, this has been happening for a long time. Little know actors get a big interest with big IP parts and then that’s all they really have and it tapers off after they stop or slow down. They get sick of it and try to branch out, then 5-10 years later they realize that was as good as it was going to get and start milking it and embracing it. Sure some break out like Natalie Portman but if you’re not an established name before these superhero roles you’re kinda screwed on the other side

She just did a series on HBO to flex her acting chops. She should be all balanced out now.

@Opticblast - the Love and Death show? Only watched the first episode, but I wasn't too impressed by anything (the cast or the story)

I just want the next MCU reboot to be filled with actors that are in LOVE with the characters they play. Every time you look it's always a doubtful conversation about playing a character. Sh*t gets depressing, BUT I understand there's more to an actor than one portrayal. Just want to see some folks that want to stick around.

@TheRationalNerd -

She's been playing this character for almost a decade across multiple franchises and TV shows.

It's fine if she wants a rest.

Sounds like she's just looking for balance and different roles when she's not playing Wanda, that's all. And it makes sense. The MCU has plenty of characters and projects and she doesn't have to be carrying the franchise on her back, she can do different projects while they focus on new characters and return when the time is right.

The headline was a little too clikbait-ish.

She’ll definitely be back, she just wants the chance to do a few other things in the mean time, it’s no big deal.
MosquitoFarmer

Same reason Downey and some of the others who’ve been there for a long time want to be able to move on to other projects. The MCU is practically a full time commitment for a big character like her, especially in Phase 4.

Superhero Movies bubble have already popped, since MCU had better legs it's taking bit longer. Most of the fans, however, sadly are in denial phase. 🥱😴

Multiverse. Recast. It's really not a big deal. But there's also nothing wrong with an actor wanting to do other things and flex their muscles. Most prefer independent stories on a smaller scale and just do these franchises for money.

Elizabeth Olsen "I Just Need Other Characters In My Life"

Sees pay cheque...

The character already had her own movie AND her own show, I think is about time she moves on...of course, you see people like Patrick Stewart and Michael Keaton embarrasing themselves for a quick paycheck, and you realice how "money talks".
