There's a huge amount of excitement surrounding the animated What If? series coming to Disney+, and while very little has been revealed about what we can expect, we do know that one episode will focus on Peggy Carter. In that, it will be Peggy who takes the Super Soldier Serum - becoming Captain Britain - while Steve Rogers suits up as a World War II Iron Man.
Now, producer Brad Winderbaum has teased what fans can expect from this unique story.
"Very quickly, you start to geek out. And you wonder, ‘What if Peggy Carter got into that pod instead of Steve Rogers and she became a Super Soldier? What would have happened in World War II?’ Then you start to think about what else was happening in that movie. The Red Skull would still be out there, of course, and the Tesseract would still be a problem."
He also confirmed that Steve's suit was built by Howard Stark and is powered by the Tesseract, a unique twist that promises to put a different spin on how Iron Man is portrayed on screen.
"If Steve Rogers stayed skinny, he’d still be a part of the story. He and Peggy would still fall in love, probably. What if Howard Stark build them an Iron Man suit and the Tesseract was the thing that powered it?" When we looked at those initial ideas, we picked ones that took on a life of their own, where it was more than, ‘Wouldn’t it be cool it...?’ It was."
Hayley Atwell has also expressed her excitement for people to see this unique new take on Agent Carter, and is clearly looking forward to fans embracing this version. "I think she's fully equipped to pick up the shield and do a really good job. I'm really looking forward to seeing women cosplay her as Captain Carter...not just as Peggy, but as someone who now has some superpowers."
It feels like Marvel Studios may have something special on its hands with this take on Peggy, and it's easy to imagine her having some sort of future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (or the Multiverse) beyond just what we see in What If? The series is expected to premiere on Disney+ in August.
