We got a first glimpse of Kahhori earlier this week when Funko unveiled some of its upcoming What If...? Merchandise, and Marvel Studios has now shared an official image of the new Native American superhero, who will debut during the second season of the Disney+ animated series.

There's been a lot of speculation about this character and how she'll be introduced to the MCU, and we finally have some details.

"What If…? asks what would happen if the Tesseract fell to Earth and landed in the sovereign Haudenosaunee Confederacy before the colonization of America. The Tesseract takes on a new life and a new mythology, transforming a lake into a gateway to the stars and leading Kahhori, a young Mohawk woman, on a quest to discover her power."

The episode in question was written by Ryan Little, and developed in close collaboration with members of the Mohawk Nation such as historian Doug George and Mohawk language expert Cecelia King to ensure cultural authenticity. The story will be told entirely in the Mohawk language, and is informed by the history of the Akwesasne region in what is now upstate New York.

Check out the image below.

Kahhori

“It tells a remarkable story from a Native-Mohawk perspective which is truly unique and historical, and will give the viewers a new, challenging and entertaining perspective on this land's first peoples. The story is dramatic, the characters fully realized, and the action sequences are breathtaking,” said George.

Added Little, “I had a wonderful writing mentor who worked extensively with the Indigenous community in upstate New York, and I was excited to draw on that experience to build an entirely original corner of the MCU with storylines for new Indigenous heroes written from a place of respect for past generations and optimism for future ones. Kahhori, pronounced ‘KAH-HORTI,’ is a real, Wolf Clan name, meaning ‘she stirs the forest’ or is someone who motivates those around her. In her debut adventure, Kahhori will have to live up to her name to recruit powerful allies into the fight to save her people and change the course of history forever.”

The second season of What If...? still hasn't been given an official premiere date, but scooper KC Walsh believes it has been hit with a significant delay, and won't debut on Disney+ until Q1 2024, with the third season pencilled in for some time in 2025.

So they officially abandoned what makes what if interesting now? Ok.

@Origame - The more you post the more Anti-Diversity you become. It's bizarre how one episode with a completely new character who is Native American created because of the tesseract, Has you upset. But the other episodes that involve other heroes are ignored because you're mad about one ethnic episode

@Origame - exactly what is it about this doesn't interest you?

@SonOfAGif - funny how you immediately jumped to anti diversity when all I said was they abandoned what makes what if interesting.

The point of what if is that you take the well known events of the original stories and change them around to see what happens to those characters.

To point out an example with a minority (to show you I'm not anti diversity), tchalla as star lord is a prime example of what I'm talking about. We know tchalla and all the characters in the episode, but the change of making tchalla the kid yondu kidnapped highlights both what's the same about him but also what's different.

We don't have this context for this new character because she's entirely new. You can easily just adjust the premise to make this in the main continuity and no one would notice.

Hell it's actually kind of insulting to native Americans who as of yet have no representation in the mcu and the one time they make a native American character it's in a throwaway episode of what if that isn't part of the main universe.

@HydraB0b - it's not that it isn't interesting. It's that it's not what what if is all about. See above.

@Origame - but you haven't seen the episode yet, so maybe there is a big What If angle in there that we don't yet know about

@Origame - "The point of what if is that you take the well known events of the original stories" - How is this any different? Because it doesn't have a well known character having a complete different origin? It's What If the tesseract fell to Earth. The tesseract is has begun a pop culture icon at this point so it's basically like a character. It falling to Earth instead of wherever it landed first changes the mythology of Earth. You are upset it's a diverse new character. But gaslight and keep trying to find loopholes to mask your distaste for diverse characters.

@bkmeijer1 - I mean, the premise itself isn't very what if. The main character isn't known yet. And knowing the structure of what if from season 1, odds are loki or someone will just pop in at the very end for a cliffhanger.

And still, I only have the premise and that's what I'm judging it on.

@Origame - valid points. And I agree with you. The whole point of "What If?" is doing the butterfly effect on a well-known story. Just making something almost completely new is more like DC's elseworld stories ... which is also fine, but perhaps don't put it in "What If?". However, this concept still looks cool enough. I'm looking forward to it. You also make a valid point about Native Americans as well. I felt similar when Disney did Princess and the Frog. I still liked that movie, but they seemed to put less effort into compared to their other "diversity" projects ... Soul was fire though.

@SonOfAGif - "because it doesn't have a well known characters" ...yes. what if is what it is because we see how the characters are different. We see how hank pym became a psychopath if hope was recruited to the avengers and killed. We see if ultron controlled the vision body. We see if loki was never adopted by Odin, what that does to both him and Thor.

The mcu is about characters. So these what ifs only work if we can see the characters change.

And again, this can take place in the main continuity. Hell you don't even need to change anything. Just say vikings brought the tesseract over with them or used it to find the new world.

@SonOfAGif - Why do you assume @origame is being anti-diversity from his comment? The whole concept of What If? is to take existing characters and change causal events. This is putting s brand new character on the stage. Just give her her own series if they really want her to be impactful.
Origame

@SonOfAGif - and no, I don't have a distaste for diverse characters. I've been outspoken that they should've recast tchalla. Get it? I'm actively campaigning for a diverse character to remain in the mcu. And my overall point involves this character being made into something actually in Canon with the mcu (in fact this is what I've been saying they need to keep doing with diversity instead of race swapping).

You're just upset I'm criticizing the mcu and are gaslighting it with anti diversity rhetoric. When that can't be further from the truth.

@Origame - you're backpeddaling sir. How is this not a What If type story? You said they are abandoning what makes the show interesting. What is it that you think they are abandoning? And how does it not fit within the framework of the show? Elaborate.

@SonOfAGif - he speaks as if he has seen this episode already. I don't think he likes the fact the character is female and native American.

SonOfAGif - 3/10/2023, 8:49 AM
@GeneralZod - Based on his prior negative comments on other articles regarding race swapping of characters whose race wasn't part of their story arcs. And then him specifically bashing one episode of What if Season 2 because the character is brand new and a diverse new hero.

@Jacory - I’m just here to say that, yes, “Soul” was fire. Best original Pixar movie since Inside Out!
