In an unpreceded move for any streaming show, the upcoming two-hour series finale of Stranger Things will play in theaters in the US and Canada for a brief run.

The climactic episode, which is titled “The Rightside Up,” will premiere on Netflix and in more than 350 theaters on December 31, starting at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET, playing through Jan. 1, 2026. Specific theater locations will be announced at a later date.

Last month, Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria seemed to dismiss the idea of allowing the finale to play on the big screen.

“A lot of people — a lot, a lot, a lot of people — have watched Stranger Things on Netflix,” she said. “It has not suffered from lack of conversation or community or sharing or fandom. I think releasing it on Netflix is giving the fans what they want.”

Whether she was attempting to throw fans off the scent in the buildup to this announcement or simply came around to the idea (or was overruled) is not clear.

The Duffer Brothers released the following statement.

“We’re beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode in theaters — it’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to everyone at Netflix for making it happen. Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”

According to the official synopsis: “The fall of 1987. Hawkins is scarred by the opening of the Rifts, and our heroes are united by a single goal: find and kill Vecna. But he has vanished — his whereabouts and plans unknown. Complicating their mission, the government has placed the town under military quarantine and intensified its hunt for Eleven, forcing her back into hiding."

“As the anniversary of Will’s disappearance approaches, so does a heavy, familiar dread. The final battle is looming — and with it, a darkness more powerful and more deadly than anything they’ve faced before. To end this nightmare, they’ll need everyone — the full party — standing together, one last time.”

In the season 4 finale, Eleven and her friends managed to defeat the evil entity known as Vecna, but at great cost. Eddie was killed (there's been some speculation that he might return, but we're not buying it), and Max was left blind, broken and in a coma.

Vecna - who was ultimately revealed to be the deranged Henry Creel - was vanquished, but It was only a temporary victory, as the concluding moments of the episode confirmed that dark forces in the Upside-down are amassing for what will almost certainly be a massive final battle.

Are you up to date with Stranger Things? If so, what do you hope to see from this final season?

Doesn't that... Defeat the point of Netflix's whole model? Isn't the whole point of Netflix being the alternative to a theater experience? Isn't that why they pay to make these things for their service?

I... I just don't understand not holding the finale of arguably your most famous and popular show... ON the format you created it for.

@TheVandalore - It is also streaming on Netflix... they're just giving people the option of seeing it on the big screen.

@MarkCassidy - I guess if it's just the finale, then they have likely already subscribed to Netflix to watch the previous episodes... So I guess if they already have your money, then extra money from theatrical runs is good.

I just find it odd that they would encourage people to essentially not watch the finale on their platform.

@TheVandalore - It's just in theaters for 24 hours. Probably only a few showings in whichever few screens it's playing on. I think this is just likely for fans to get together and celebrate together which is going to be good for marketing.

@TheVandalore - Yeah but it's just a ONE TIME thing. It's not a regular 30 day run or how WB did it years ago with their slate. Just an option/occasion type of event. Pretty decent gimmick honestly for fans who do compare Stranger Things to a blockbuster movie.

If it's in my city, I might think about it honestly. They also might give out free stuff too just for going.

@TheVandalore - They do extremely limited theatrical releases so they don’t eat into their streaming model too much. I bet that K Pop Demon Hunters would have made A LOT more money in theaters had they given it a wider release.

Is it going to be like one of those AMC Fathom presentations?

I don't watch any TV shows on any regular basis, nor do I pay for streaming or cable etc because I'm not interested in 99% of the slop that's out there.

But, if people already pay for Netflix, why would they expect them to get up off their asses and go out to pay MORE just to see something they've already subscribed to? 🧐

@Feralwookiee - Because it'll be an event that people might want to watch on the big screen? Same reason the Breaking Bad finale played in some theaters

I’ll finish the series but they waited so long - for various reasons - to wrap this up that I can’t help but say that I’ve lost interest.

This kind of sounds cool! The last season looked visually great and I’m sure they’ll put just as much effort into the production this last season so I might check the finale out in the theater. I’m kind of an avid movie goer so I’m pretty down for this, just for the experience. Gotta keep our movie theaters alive.

Interesting…

I’ll likely still watch it just at home but I hope people who do see it in theaters enjoy the finale & the experience.

Anyway as someone who has been a fan of the show thus far and is looking forward to this final season , I hope they wrap up the story & characters well!!.

I really dig this show. Sure, it's had its ups and downs, but it has been a great retro show that has done what so many pretender copycats have tried before.

I'm all in. I will rewatch the whole thing and enjoy the last season until the curtain falls. You're all invited as long as you bring lots of tequila and cookies.
