While we will unfortunately have to wait until December for the second season of The Witcher, Netflix will whet our appetite with an anime prequel of sorts this August. During WitcherCon today, the streaming service announced that its upcoming anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will premiere on August 23.

The anime film will focus on Geralt of Rivia's mentor, Vesemir, as a powerful new threat faces the Continent. A teaser trailer was released alongside the release date announcement and a brief synopsis from Netflix that reads: “The anime film tells the story of Vesemir, a swashbuckling young witcher who escaped a life of poverty to slay monsters for coin…”

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is being handled by Korean animation house Studio Mir, which is best known for its work on beloved animated series The Legend of Korra and Netflix's Voltron: Legendary Defender. The Witcher showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is serving as producer.

Vesemir didn't actually appear in Season 1 of the live-action Witcher series, but the fan-favorite character is set to make his debut in the upcoming second season and will be played by Kim Bodnia. The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf will serve as a nice lead in to the character's live-action debut, allowing viewers to familiarize themselves with the young swashbuckling witcher.

It was also announced during WitcherCon that Season 2 of the live-action series will premiere on Netflix on December 17, and you can check out the new teaser trailer for that here.

I love that anime is taking over more and more. This will give them even bigger opportunities to use monsters. Also is that Kaer Trolde in the poster?

These guys did DOTA as well (wish it was Powerhouse Studios AKA the Castlevania guys) which I liked a lot so I'm pretty excited for this.

@Kumkani - the Dota series felt kinda unwelcoming to watch in a sense that you can only really understand the lore and whats going on if you played the game (which I didn't).

I liked the animation style though.

Lot of Witcher content coming our way. And although I'm not the biggest fan of the games or a reader of the books, I must say I look forward to this

CD Projekt Red made a convention for the only good game they’ve made lol.

@TexasAvenger - The Witcher 1-3 were all great games, but most people have never played 1 and 2.

Also, the Gwent Card Game and Imperialism are also both awesome.

Obscurity does not equal bad.

They really only have 1 bad game, and that was Cyberpunk. And The Witcher is very obviously their most recognized franchise, so yeah, it makes sense to have a WitcherCon.

@CorndogBurglar - Card games are tricky with me. Majority of them don't catch my interest, maybe only the Yu-Gi-Oh games but I was big into the trading card game as a kid. I've never heard of Imperialism, and I didn't even know The Witcher 1&2 existed until everyone was raving about Wild Hunt lol. I didn't mean for my comment to come across as me saying The Witcher is bad. I just think it's funny how Cyberpunk was a massive fail after all the hype, and them doing this convention focusing on The Witcher. It's like they want everyone to forget that Cyberpunk ever happened. Can't say I blame them.

@TexasAvenger - Yeah, they were mostly a pretty obscure developer before Witcher 3. But Cyberpunk was a giant mess. I'm not even sure I would like it all that much even if it released in perfect condition. But releasing with countless issues and bugs really hurt them.

I look at it like this though. They've got a history of making good games, even of its not a lot. But thats expected, they are a small developer and can only focus on one game at a time. But they've really only got one bad game out of 6. I can't think of any developer that hasn't made at least one bad game, except maybe Naughty Dog. So I'm willing to give them another chance. Because if we condemn every developer thats ever made a bad game, then all devs would be considered bad.

I just hope they can come back from the Cyberpunk fiasco. Because it wasn't just a bad game. They kind of lied and told everyone it was in great shape for all consoles, when its really only playable on the next gen consoles, and even then had tons of bugs. So we'll see. They are talented and can make great games.

@CorndogBurglar - Yeah, the whole lying about Cyberpunk bit them in the ass. They were really feeling themselves and bought into their own hype. I’ve seen some people with top end PCs, PS5, and Series X say that they haven’t had many bugs but that there’s just not a lot to the game.
