THE MANDALORIAN & GROGU Will Benefit From $21+ Million Tax Credits For Shooting In California

The Mandalorian & Grogu is gearing up to begin shooting ahead of its planned 2026 release, and it's now been revealed that the movie will be the first big screen Star Wars story shot in California...

Deadline (via SFFGazette.com) has revealed that The Mandalorian & Grogu will shoot in California, a first for a Star Wars movie. Why? Well, it may well have something to do with the Golden State paying Lucasfilm a massive $21,755,000 in conditional tax credits!

That will keep Din Djarin in California, something we're sure Jon Favreau and the studio is fine with given that's where The Mandalorian's first three seasons were also based.

As the trade explains, this is one of the biggest allocations in the California Film Commission's history. It's not quite up there with Bumblebee's $22.4 million haul but is ahead of both Captain Marvel's $20.8 million and the $20.2 million secured by Quentin Tarantino for what's expected to be his final movie.

"Estimated to be hiring 500 crew members, 54 cast members, and 3500 background players for 92 filming days in California this year," the report adds, "The Mandalorian & Grogu is expected to generate a record-breaking $166,438,000 in qualified expenditures and below-the-line wages."

We're sure you'll be wondering whether this means we'll get set photos. Unfortunately, we're not banking on it thanks to The Mandalorian's usual reliance on The Volume, but the project is clearly taking shape and we're optimistic casting news and the like will start hitting the trades soon.

It's previously been reported that Favreau's scripts for season 4 evolved into a movie after last year's WGA strikes. However, as The Mandalorian is such a big draw on Disney+, new episodes could still follow somewhere down the line. Only time will tell.

"I have loved telling stories set in the rich world that George Lucas created," Favreau said in a statement when news of these movie plans first broke. "The prospect of bringing the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu to the big screen is extremely exciting."

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy added, "Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have ushered into Star Wars two new and beloved characters, and this new story is a perfect fit for the big screen."

Disney needs some guaranteed box office hits after a rough couple of years and The Mandalorian & Grogu is bound to succeed in that respect. Both characters are massively popular with hardcore and casual fans, and it will be interesting to see what sort of story this movie tells and whether it justifies the leap from streaming to theaters.

Are you excited for The Mandalorian & Grogu? As always, you can weigh in with your thoughts in the usual place.

Healthcare #5 in the country. We rank 45th in the union when it comes to gun violence. 5th biggest economy in the world. GDP blows every state out of the water. Our tax revenue supports other shitty states like Mississippi and Tennessee.

Do we have problems? Yup! But our state is the capital for business and consumers. You hate us cause you ain't us🦸🖖😎

@AmazingFILMporg - Though I agree with the broader point you're making, Tennessee is actually 36th in the nation in terms of dependence on federal funds (ie, tax revenue from states like California.) That's mostly because our shit-ass MAGA statehouse keeps rejecting block grants for Medicaid and public schools, because they are indifferent to the suffering of poor people.

Taking two characters that were well liked in their first season to the big screen is a sure fire recipe for success!

@California - Second season was better than the first and the best episodes of Boba Fett were the ones that involved the Mandalorian. The quality indeed dropped in season 3, but to imply that's enough to make it fail, is quite a stretch.

Good ole California. The land where rich people get hand-outs and free sh*t. Meanwhile the State has one of the worst economies of the entire country. It's beyond comical.

@sully - "the State has one of the worst economies of the entire country"

Literally, demonstrably false. If California were a country, it would have the 5th largest economy in the world. They have, by far, the highest GDP of any state in the union.

@ClintThaHamster - You spouting this obvious nonsense while simultaneously and completely ignoring the countless businesses leaving the state en masse and the massive tax increases, overinflated minimum wage and welfare programs, is beyond comical. The State is in massive debt my dude and it's obvious you have zero clue about basic economics. Wherever you got your education from I'd suggest maybe going back and starting over. My bet it was in California, wasn't it?

You're more than welcome to continue educating yourself on the subject if you wish, or not and just keep pulling BS out of your ass. California's economy is beyond wrecked and its only getting worse. Period. The sooner you come to terms with it, the better and less foolish you'll make yourself look on the internet and presumably, outside of the internet too.

@sully - All true. Also, not what people mean when they talk about "the economy." Not to get all "Webster's dictionary defines economy as" but...

"the wealth and resources of a country or region, especially in terms of the production and consumption of goods and services."

In terms of the production and consumption of goods and services (also known as the GDP) California's economy ranks 5th in the world.

Taking your concerns point by point, using your sources...

A "good" debt-to-GDP ratio is considered to be about 60%.(1) If California added "$6.4 Billion to California’s $1.6 Trillion Debt," that would bring their total debt to $2.21T. Their GDP is $3.69T, so their debt-to-GDP ratio would be 57.6%, right at the target cap. Currently they're well under it.

California has the highest number of households receiving SNAP benefits, for sure. They also have the highest population. The important number is SNAP recipients per capita. 14% of California households receive SNAP benefits. Meanwhile 16% of Texas households and 21% of Florida households receive SNAP benefits. California actually has a smaller portion of their population on gov't benefits. And you know what gets people OFF of SNAP benefits?

Minimum Wage increases. And you know what doesn't impact automatically? Minimum Wage increases. Hell, inflation actually went down in California last year after all of those catastrophic wage increases. Meanwhile, the companies mentioned in the linked article, McDonalds and Chipotle, saw profits increase in 2023. Chipotle's net income went up 24% last year. That's net, after labor expenses. They didn't raise prices to compensate for labor costs. They raised prices to make more money.

The income tax question is more complex. There's a case to be made that high taxes aren't a bad thing, as long as taxpayers are seeing real benefits from the programs they're paying for. But CA's quality of life is abysmal, at least according to US News & World Report. So, yeah, there's a case to be made that Californians are over-taxed. But that doesn't impact their GDP, which is . . . the 5th highest in the world.

Not sure how this is a movie. Season 2 ended their story, but for some reason why they reunited them.

So, the movie can’t end with Grogu leaving again, either he dies or Mando does.

As we have the sequel movies, they can’t just ride off into the sunset, as we will ask where were they for sequel events.

Maybe twist ending is Grogu turns to the dark side and Mando kills him

@Knightrider - "the movie can’t end with Grogu leaving again, either he dies or Mando does"

Why? Why couldn't the movie end with the two of them, still together, still adventuring?
Knightrider
Knightrider - 3/7/2024, 3:20 PM
@ClintThaHamster - Cause the movie feels like a climax and if nothing changes then there really isn’t any point in the story.
Plus that has been the show, so, again, it can’t be the same as we have seen it otherwise this isn’t a movie, it is just a longer Disney Plus episode but with a slightly bigger budget.
My gut feeling is the movie will have a tragic ending, that it will tie to the First Order’s rise, Grogu will be used to help the Empire create Snoke with Force abilities and there maybe an in direct tie in to Rey’s movie.

If it is a happy ending, then it should be Mando and Grogu just chilling on a planet retiring from adventure

Clintthahamster - 3/7/2024, 6:14 PM
@Knightrider - Well, we already know that we still have Filoni's "Mandoverse" movie coming down the line, so "The Mandalorian Will Return" and all that. I agree that some change in status quo could be rewarding, but I also think that maybe we're all just a little over-accustomed to serialized storytelling. We all grew up on Star Wars and comic books, sure, but we also grew up on Indiana Jones and James Bond. Speaking only for myself, I would have no problem with a self-contained adventure.
