THE MANDALORIAN: Jon Favreau On Why Din Djarin And Grogu Reunited In THE BOOK OF BOBA FETT Instead Of Season 3

The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau has explained why Din Djarin and Grogu reunited in The Book of Boba Fett, and also reveals more about The Child's decision not to remain with Luke Skywalker...

In The Mandalorian's season 2 finale, Din Djarin's time with Grogu reached an end when The Child was reunited with his own people and taken by Luke Skywalker to train as a Jedi.

Many fans were horrified to think that might be the last time we'd see Grogu, especially knowing that, years later, Luke's training academy was laid waste to by Ben Solo and the Knights of Ren. The Book of Boba Fett delivered a surprising retcon of sorts by reuniting the duo, with Grogu choosing to return to the Mandalorian and forego Yoda's lightsaber.

For anyone who didn't tune into the spin-off series, Din and Grogu being back together could be a tad confusing in the upcoming third season. That's something showrunner Jon Favreau is acutely aware of.

"We couldn’t just hit a hard reset," he tells Empire Online (via SFFGazette.com). "It’s going to be interesting to see how this unfolds for people who may not have seen The Book Of Boba Fett. But I think The Book Of Boba Fett offered time to pass. You saw what Mando was like without Baby Yoda and we saw what Grogu was like without the Mandalorian and neither of them was doing too good."

"So them coming back together was a really good plot point that allows us to jump back into Season 3 while maintaining the central relationship."

Favreau would go on to explain that The Book of Boba Fett was meant to show us Grogu didn't necessarily belong with his own kind and that it was important to give him the chance to choose his path.

"[This] little kid [Grogu] is given a decision to choose. And the kid chooses the emotional relationship and wants to be with the Mandalorian, and passing up Yoda’s lightsaber. Part of you wants to see him develop in that way, and part the other."

As for how The Child's ability to use the Force will factor into season 3 of The Mandalorian and beyond, the writer and producer teased: "Historically, Mandalorians developed all of those tools and armour and weapons to be able to counteract the Force abilities of Jedi. So as a storyteller this offers tremendous opportunity."

No matter how you feel about the decision to so quickly reunite Din and Grogu in The Book of Boba Fett, their continued adventures are rich in storytelling possibilities and it's clearly something that excites Favreau. Plus, we all wanted to see them back together again, so why drag it out?

The Mandalorian returns to Disney+ on March 1.

At the very least you could have saved their reunion for the first episode of season 3

Still a waste of plot, really we should get at least a season of mando on his own considering all he went through to find a jedi but at least its something that we dont need to watch other material to understand the show we are watching

We annonced a boba Fett show before realising we really had no idea what it was suppose to be, so we padded it with Mando and Grogu hoping that would also make more people watch.

Might seem like a small thing, but it really does bug me. Binging Mando from s2 to s3 without Boba Fett in the middle would be so awkward. The show should have stayed consistent/been able to stand on its own 2 feet without essential viewing in between.

Let's face it, they did it to boost book of Boba. Either because they ran out of ideas for that show or even they didn't believe it would work. You don't just abandon your show to give an episode of a completely different show when you care about it. And it's not like we need to have that context, since djarin is just there for support.

Long story short… the book of boba Fett needed more episodes and the creatives wanted to give Mando fans I sent I’ve to watch the Book of Boba Fett.

I get it, but I don't see why they did it in a show neither is a lead character in. It was kinda distracting even. It added one storyline too many into the show imo.

Think it would've worked just as well as the first two episodes of Mando S3 and just had Din show up in TBOBF's last episode. That way TBOBF could've just been six episodes and focused on alternating between Boba's Tusken Raider days and Daimyo days.

So Baby Yoda, the strong force user, is emotionally attached to Mando. Pretty sure there was at least a few movies about what happens when a force user attaches themselves to others like that and how that leads down the path of fear of losing them, which leads to anger, and then to hate, and then to the dark side. Really wish they didn't do this or connect Mando to the sequels as a way to try and manipulate people to accept them. I want to love this show but those 2 reasons are enough to stay away from it, and that sucks cause I just wanted a cool fun SW series.

@WarMonkey - Anakin didnt fall to the dark side because he was attached to someone, but because he was forbidden from doing so. The problem was not his attachment, but having to keep it all secret and silent. Also he was kinda pro fascist so that didnt help at all.

@Razorface1 - I can't remember exactly what it was but it was something spiritual like Buddhism or something where the way to a higher self was by letting go of the fear of losing attachments. Jedi thought Love of another could lead to fear of losing them

They did it to get viewers and sell toys

I definitely think their reunion should've been saved for an actual episode of The Mandalorian - whether the S3 premier, S3 finale, an episode in-between or even the eventual Series Finale, but it is what it is, the Mando episodes were by far the best episodes of BOBF, and I just hope Mando S3 lives up to the first two.

Season 2 should have killed off Grogu and ended with Moff Gideon’s escape. Would have set up a more compelling arc for Mando and Bo Katan in Season 3.

@DerekLake - I wouldn't have been mad. But the whole point of Grogu is merchandising. They were scared of pissing off Grogu stans and potentially loosing merchandising money. The Grogu arc should have ended with season 2. I enjoy Mando more as a bounty hunter than I do with him as a baby sitter. Grogu can't become a Mandalorian because he'd have to wear a helmet. And they wouldn't want to cover up all that adorableness.

@BlackCaesar - edgelords as always missing the point.

@BlackCaesar - I mean get the merchandising reason. But from a story perspective, what the titular character needed was that sort of change and motivation going into the third season.

What a way to say BOBF wasn't good, the story was a tad all over the place, and we needed a boost in ratings , attention and meaningfulness so we threw in our characters to get something out of content people weren't caring for (even though they wanted to). we all know the game play - IMO Mando showing up in BOBF was something Jon probably didn't want to do

Because Book of Boba Fett felt like a mandated show no one was passionate about so in the middle turned into Mandalorian 2.5 in order to get the two main characters back together again (also likely mandated from the top).

I really liked parts of Book of Boba Fett. But the crime saga portions sucked and lacked teeth. And the show overall was disjointed and disinterested in the main character resulting in something that failed to come together in a satisfying way.
