OBI-WAN KENOBI: Lucasfilm President Teases Possible Season 2 Plans Despite It Being A "Limited Series"

Obi-Wan Kenobi is billed as a "limited series" by Disney+, but that doesn't mean this is the last we'll see of Ewan McGregor's Jedi Master! Here's what Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy had to say...

Set 10 years after the events of Revenge of the Sith, Obi-Wan Kenobi looks set to follow the former Jedi Master as he leaves Tatooine on a rescue mission when young Princess Leia is kidnapped. Sith Inquisitors will take aim at the fallen hero, while the stage is clearly being set for a rematch between Kenobi and Darth Vader that better explains their final duel in A New Hope

The six-episode limited series will explain "what had happened to Obi-Wan between the guy that Ewan had brought to life and the guy that Sir Alec Guinness brought to life" according to writer Joby Harold, and that story will play out on Disney+ beginning May 25.

But will that be the end of this particular tale?

"It was definitely conceived as a limited series, and it is one big story with a beginning, middle, and end," says director Deborah Chow. "The approach has always been that it is one full story."

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, on the other hand, says a season 2 is "certainly something we talk about." She adds that's "mainly because everybody came together and had such an incredible time. Ewan had an incredible time. Hayden had an incredible time. So certainly from that point of view, everybody involved would love to see this not end."

"But we have to really spend our time asking the question: Why would we do it?" Kennedy notes, before fans start getting too excited about another batch of episodes. "If we were to decide to do anything more with the Obi-Wan character, we'd have to really answer the question why?"

There are still gaps in Obi-Wan's life on Tatooine that could be filled by a follow-up series, but Lucasfilm will need to be careful if they hope to avoid telling another story simply for the sake of it. Either way, we know this is unlikely to be the final time we see Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader, as it's previously been reported he'll make an appearance in Ahsoka

As for "Ben" Kenobi, who knows what the future might hold in store for the Jedi Master?

Let it be limited.. and move on. even if its a 10 out of 10. So many other shows have been announced.. let those breathe I say.

while I'm really excited for this I'm happy with it being a one off. Time we move away from the whole skywalker saga.

These character can always be suprise cameos down the line in other shows.

Perhaps a limited series starring Darth Vader.

A Dark Show about genocide (The Purge) and the expansion of the empire.

Also, we could see all the Moffs and the rejuvenated version of Gideon.

@Repian - That I wouldn't mind. I've always wanted to see a Vader centric movie/show.

Would love to see the inner struggle between his humanity, allegiance to the emperor, any internal struggles that may or may not remain after Anakin's fall mixed in with him being reliant on machines to stay alive. There soo much potential there for a character study that we've never seen before, with some obligatory action of course.

I'd like to away from the skywalkers, BUT he would be an exception.

@UnderBelly - they made 3 of those already

@Dredd97 - I hear you, but he wasn't the focus, Luke and Co were, the prequels were Anakin and The Princess and then the only time we saw 'VADER' show any depth was end of Empire and end of Retrun.. I'd like the focus on Vader solely. Something akin to what they did for him in the comics.

I think that's probably the only natural way they can continue whatever story we get with Obi Wan, instead of calling it a Season 2....Unless we get a proper character arc for him in the mini.

@UnderBelly - I'm very curious to see where they go now that the Skywalker saga is officially done. Sure, the Mandalorian and the Clone Wars spinoff fill in the gaps, along with the upcoming Ahsoka show, but there is soooo much that can be explored. So much that has, to this point, only been explored largely in games, novels, etc. Even that is mostly Skywalker centric too. I actually thought Disney would have more trouble with what to do after the sequel trilogy than the trilogy itself.

No…no get [frick]ed. Just for me a stand alone Obi Wan story that stands on its own. If this sets up more seasons, or spin offs, or tie ins to other shows it can get in the bin

No way we only get one season, plus this actually looks like decent SW content for once

No no no, please limited. No finale cliffhangers, spinoffs etc.
Just be the best version it can possibly be. I hope they wrote it specifically for 1 season and not dragging anything out which would lead into a 2nd season.

I read they turned the scripts down initially, because they were too dark? that's ridiculous. they live in constant fear of The Last Jedi, when that was the only worthwhile thing Star Wars had done in a long time. but some nerds notpicked it so, can't make changes to your action figures ever again. They're always happy now

@Dredd97 - "they live in constant fear of The Last Jedi, when that was the only worthwhile thing Star Wars had done in a long time"

Fallen Order?
Clone Wars Season 7?
Mandalorian seasons 1 and 2?
Rogue One?

Anyway, those are two different points. Fans didn't dislike the last Jedi because it was too dark. It was for other reasons.

@Nightwing1015 - I wasnt saying they didn't like it because it wasn't dark, it's different. Doing something traumatic with Obi-Wan, having him suffer PTSD could be interesting. But when they made changes to Luke people rioted.

also I think some of those came out after TLJ, and my point was "had done in a long time"

@Dredd97 - IDK the same fans which hated the last Jedi got extremely mad when they heard Kathleen Kennedy was changing the scripts to be less dark. So not sure about that. Probably because it makes more sense for Obi-Wan to have depression than they thought it did for Luke.

@Dredd97 - last Jedi isn't even as dark as Empire, it's just stupid.

@Dredd97 - I didn't hate The Last Jedi, I preferred it to the other 2 films, but the films never felt overly connected to each other, weren't cohesive individually, and felt like an affront to fans. Giving everything seemingly except for what fans actually wanted. No OG reunion from the original trilogy, not simply following George's notes, and trying to monetize immediately instead of working on a quality product.

@Nightwing1015 - I'm curious to see if Kestis finds his way to Ahsoka or Mando, but I guess that's dependent on where the games go. Witwer's Force Unleashed character would have been fun, but he was way overpowered compared to what's been seen in films and even Clone Wars. The funny thing about Last Jedi is, in somewhat typical movie fashion, the end is told to you more or less in the beginning. As soon as Luke shows up at the end, that line Kylo has about it being fatal over great distances immediately lets you know Luke's dead and the OG trilogy is now mostly out of the picture.

I'm all for it, as long as there's a good story to be told. If it takes 6 episodes, 10 or 12, as long as it's not rushed or dragged out. It has to be well written.

It could still be a limited series, just an extended season is all.

Do what must be done.
