Sony's Rumored VENOM Animated Movie Has Reportedly Enlisted THE BOYS' Seth Rogen As Writer/Producer

Exciting news for fans of Marvel's Lethal Protector today as a new rumour suggests Sony Pictures Animation is eyeing Seth Rogen (The Boys, Invincible) as writer and producer for its upcoming Venom project.

There have been rumblings for a while that Sony Pictures Animation is developing an animated Venom movie, and we now have a significant update courtesy of scooper @CanWeGetToast (via Toonado.com).

Apparently, Sony has managed to enlist Seth Rogen as a writer and producer on the supposed R-Rated project.

The actor is no stranger to adult-focused comic book adaptations after serving in those same roles on the likes of Preacher and The Boys. Rogen is also an executive producer on Prime Video's critically acclaimed Invincible, an animated series with an adult tone. The same could be said for The Boys Presents: Diabolical, another R-Rated TV show.

Rogen's sensibilities would be a great match for a Venom project, and would likely put a spin on the character that makes comic book fans happy (a must after the divisive live-action efforts starring Tom Hardy).

Sony bringing Rogen into the fold feels like a smart move on the studio's part and could be a sign the studio is looking to course correct after Morbius and Madame Web flopped. However, Venom will have a lot to live up to in terms of competing with the animated Spider-Verse movies!

"Honestly, probably fear," Rogen said last year about why he still hasn't boarded a Marvel or DC project. "We really have a pretty specific way we work; me and Evan [Goldberg] have been writers for 20 years at this point. It’s a fear of the process, honestly. And I say that knowing nothing about the process. There are a lot of Marvel things I love."

"It’s mostly a fear of how would we plug into the system they have in place, which seems like a very good system, and a system that serves them very well," he continued. "But is it a system that we would ultimately get really frustrated with? And what’s nice about ['Mutant Mayhem'] is that we’re the producers of this. So we dictated the system, and we dictated the process in a lot of ways."

"We are creating the infrastructure and process for them, not plugging into someone else’s infrastructure and process. We’re control freaks!"

2018's Venom has come under fire for its Spider-Man-less take on the anti-hero's origin story, and while Venom: Let There Be Carnage was an improvement, it still didn't deliver the interpretation of this character many fans would like to see on screen. A new animated Venom movie could go some way in fixing that.

This November's Venom 3, meanwhile, is expected to be Tom Hardy's "last dance" as Eddie Brock. With it looking unlikely Marvel Studios will ever pick up on Spider-Man: No Way Home's Venom tease, an animated project could be the next logical step to explore the popular Lethal Protector's story in a new way.

Venom first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #300 in 1988. Initially conceived as an alien symbiote that bonded with Spider-Man, Eddie Brock later became host to the alien costume after being introduced as a disgraced journalist seeking revenge on Spider-Man.

Characters like Flash Thompson, Mac Gargan, and Dylan Brock have all held the "Venom" moniker since, but Eddie remains a firm fan favourite and seems like the most logical choice of lead for his own animated movie.

Sony still hasn't officially announced this animated Venom movie so stay tuned for updates as we have them.

@OptimusCrime - Why? He produces Invincible and The Boys and they are both great. So I have faith he can do a good job.

@Urubrodi - Robert Kirkman and Eric Kripke involvement in those projects are the primary reasons for that, not Seth Rogan.

@HashTagSwagg - I haven't watched it as my kids aren't old enough but if you have I'd love to know what you didn't like about it.

I've heard largely positive reception from it from people whose reviews and feedback I trust

@dragon316 - Clearly a large majority found it to be above average with a RT score of 95%. I do understand that doesn't mean 95% absolutely adored it but it does mean 95% didn't find it bad.

So what about the story did you not like?

@dragon316 - I'm pretty sure you were watching the 2023 version.

Appreciate you giving me your feedback, I'll still check it out once my kids are old enough to make my own decision on it

@Evansly - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2003 would be my favourite interaction, the 4 with distinctively different (personality wise), it had the right blend of humour mixed with serious moments, 2023 turtles acted more like Hoodrat's. Visually it just looked liked they ripped off into the spiderverse and made the human's more repulsive, especially April's design. Hadn't been that irritated by the turtles since Michelangelo in the Batman crossover were none of the humour landed.

@HashTagSwagg - Well he definitely didn't work alone in them but was at least involved in an important capacity, and also produced TMNT as it was mentioned. Main point being that having him producing this movie does not in any form suggest it will turn out bad, quite the opposite given his track record as producer of CBM properties.

If true then idk how i feel about it…

I like Rogen and don’t mind if he produces the film since he has a good track record with that such as The Boys , Invincible and TMNT:Mutant Mayhem (a movie he’s a writer on aswell).

However I’m unsure of him as a writer on this since I don’t think his sensibilities entirely fit the character , atleast for me but i would give him a shot though!!.

I mean he's a Jewish person he actively joked about Israel committing genocide of Palestine way back in 2020 during his promotional tour. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets cancelled by Jewish individuals for speaking against them.

I haven't watched the Boys, but Invincible is easily some of the most cookie cutter, unoriginal bullshit show out there right now, so if he gets his hands on Venom, I highly doubt it'll be much different than those Hardy flicks.

Evansly - 3/25/2024, 8:39 AM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - I just woke up so misread. When Boys is really great and worth checking out.

What do you find cookie cutter about Invincible?
OrgasmicPotatoe
OrgasmicPotatoe - 3/25/2024, 11:00 AM
@Evansly - I found it to be predictable while I wasn't even trying to predict it. It's like paint by numbers.

At first, I thought it would only be 'standard superhero fare, BUT GORE !', but my friend told me it was more than that, so I gave it a shot. The first episode was exactly that, and I finished the season hoping to find more, but it's nothing else than that. It's like the edgy 8 year old who just found out about Punisher and thinks he's the absolute best because he uses guns. It's trying to say 'look at all these other successful superheroes, I could do the same !' and it does just that, copying the exact same without an ounce of originality. That robot who wanted to be human was nothing but Vision-lite. The 'Guardians' that Omni man takes out are litterally Flash, Batman and Wonder Woman.

They're not even hiding their lack of originality.
Evansly
Evansly - 3/25/2024, 12:30 PM
@OrgasmicPotatoe - That would be on Robert Kirkman not Seth Rogan
aievilgenius

@Evansly - Invincible isn't cookie cutter at all, and the story hasn't even begun yet. They do use caricatures of known heroes but those are all background characters and you won't have to wonder what their powers are. If you haven't read the comic, the violence is present but not for shock value (like the boys comic, which I found just ok with a TERRIBLE ending). The show is great, the main story hasn't began yet, and it's anything but predictable.

@aievilgenius - Yeah I am personally loving it including what has come out since the break. My only complaint so far is that they could have leaned more into the emotional weight of team b losing

Sony wants to keep banking on animated Spidey content but I am not sure Seth Rogen is exactly the right person to deliver something similar to what Phil Lord and Chris Miller have done so far. I would say it's their biggest gamble yet.
