EVE Online TV Series Will Stay True To Source Says Baltasar Kormákur

One of the top MMORPG games on the market with over 500k subscribers, EVE Online publisher CCP Games is partnering with Baltasar Kormákur (Contraband, 2 Guns) for a television series based on the sci-fi fantasy game.

Baltasar Kormákur, director of the upcoming film, “2 Guns”, recently discussed his current work on the ‘EVE Online’ tv series for video game publisher, CCP Games with TIME Magazine. Said Kormákur, “The tag line is that it’s based on a true story that happens 20,000 years in the future. It has happened, in the game, because in some ways the game becomes a reality.” Kormákur is referencing the fan-created stories from the MMORPG (collected at http://truestories.eveonline.com) which he and his team are using as a foundation for an all new story for the ‘EVE Online’ tv series. The proposed show currently doesn’t have a network attached but Kormákur and CCP Games are banking on the millions of online subscribers for a built-in audience. Staying true to the source material is very important for Baltasar who stated, “If you’re going to do it to be most creative guy in the world, you may as well come up with your own idea. There’s no reason to take something dear to people and just tramp on it.”

Baltasar is not an avid gamer by any stretch, revealing that the last video game he played on a regular basis was “Pac Man”. He describes his role on the team as a counter-balance to the many EVE Online players and enthusiast among the ‘EVE Online’ tv series’ creative group, which is an important function in ensuring that the series appeals to more than just EVE players. And in terms of the poor track-record for video game adaptations, Baltasar references the comic book film and television movement and its humble beginnings, pointing out that, “In some ways games are like graphic novels were a few years ago. Everyone thought it was the worst idea to make anything out of graphic novels—but it was actually a brilliant idea.” The billion dollars Disney has made from “The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3″ would have to agree with Kormákur’s statement.

Eve Online (EVE Online) is an MMORPG video game from CCP Games set 21,000 years in the future where humans have exhausted the resources on Earth and have expanded to populate the Milky Way. The discovery of a natural wormhole to another, unexplored galaxy led to further colonial expansion as the wormhole became known as "New Eden". A structure was built to stabilize the "New Eden" whcih bridged the two galaxies and that structure was in turn named, "EVE". However, when the natural wormhole unexpectedly collapsed, it destroyed the gate. Cut off from the rest of humanity and supplies from Earth, the colonies of New Eden were left starved and disconnected from one another; some died out entirely. Over the eons the descendants of the colonists managed to survive and rebuild their own societies, but the memories and knowledge of humanity's origins as well as their own from Earth and the Milky Way became lost. Five major distinct societies rose to prominence from the colonies, each growing into interstellar spaceflight-capable civilizations. The states based around these colonies make up the five major factions in Eve Online: the Amarr Empire, the Caldari State, the Gallente Federation, the Minmatar Republic and the Jove Directorate.

Never got the appeal for this game. My only question is .

WHY NO MASS EFFECT TV SERIES?!?!
It can't work as a movie, it HAS to be a tv show!

The budget is probably the big reason why big, epic sci-fi universes like ME and SW don't get made into shows.

Yeah Eve Online is NOT a run-n-gun game so MOST people won't even have heard of it. Much less played it. It's a thinking man's video game. Nothing is given to you. You have to work for everything you get, And then on top of that, you have to take care of your resources. They don't sit in an imaginary box that no one else has access to and that has unlimited space. It has a little grind to it (name me one MMO that doesn't), but things get real interesting when you join a fleet. Fleet Battles and skirmishes are what keep me playing this game. There's nothing in the game that you cant affect. There are no area resets. Your journeys will take you by many desolate planets and ship graveyards that have been decimated by actual gamer battles.

TV is the ONLY way to do this. There's literally so much story that the fans will take a hit on the VFX if they get the stories correct. I'm not saying this is better than Mass Effect, but in sheer numbers, EO has more in common with Warhammer 40K than with something like ME. EO is more Science Fiction and ME is more Sci-Fi

I've been playing EO since it's inception and I had no idea that they were developing a TV series. It can be done as long as the right person does it. A lot of factors go into a successful TV show and picking the right channel is primary. I dare say "The Walking Dead" would not have worked on any other channel save A&E. On a network channel the show would have been a joke, but also, on an HBO like channel all they would have wanted to show was gratuitous sex, lots of blood, and more gratuitous sex. So finding the right venue for this paramount. Immediately one thinks the SyFy channel, but they suck IMO. The way they handled "Defiance"; it could be on the CW network.

An EVE TV show "Based on Actual Events 20,000 years in the future" is an AMAZBALLS way to sell the show.

Here is the key if you don't know how EVE Online works... Everything is open ended, and players even have the ability to change the rules of the world if they need to.

It sort of a cross between Thermal Dynamics and storytelling. Intrigue and stories come from actual player interaction. People backstab and lie, or form honorable alliances - just like in life.

The game does little to advance storylines, it just provides the environment for the stories to take place.

So, in a very real way, these are "true stories" in that they are the result of humans interacting with each other in a common space.

Lets hope the TV series is better watching than the MMO plays:

COOL!!!! i mean okay the game is boring but it has one of the best character designing things ever. i spend hours just customizing characters in that game since the actual game play is just flying from point a to point b
