Let me preface this news with the fact that despite having an extremely poor track record, video game movie adaptions are poised to become the next source for Hollywood tentpole franchises. Similar to what he saw with CBM's [we suffered through movies like Steel, Howard the Duck, Batman & Robin, and many others before Hollywood produced gems like Blade, Spider-Man, Iron Man and The Dark Knight] the video game movies are paying their dues, figuring out the formula, so-to-speak, about how to transform successful video games to the big screen. Set to benefit from this early tinkering are adaptions of Assassins Creed, Uncharted, BioShock, and of course Mass Effect.

In a bit of an odd twist, the official Legendary Pictures website posted a Q&A seemingly contradicting everything previously stated at this years San Diego Comic-Con. Well, the site has now been updated with information that not only spells Commander Shepard's name right but will also please long-time fans of the video game franchise.

Q: Will it just be an adaptation of the first game, second game, or a completely new story?

A: It will focus on Commander Shepard's journey, centering around the story of the original Mass Effect game.

Q: How are you going to address the element of 'choice' that the players have in the game?

A: The writer is weaving a path through Shepard's decisions that best supports the narrative of the movie and the motivations of its characters.

Q: Will it be a trilogy?

A: We are really focused on making this a great movie, so we'll see where it takes us. We have to get the first one right to know whether there will be more.

Q: Will Seth Green portray Joker, the character he voiced in the game?

A: No casting decisions have been made yet.

Q: Will the movie be focused on Shepard?

A: Yes.

Q: If the movie is focused on Shepard, will it be the male Shepard or the female Shepard?

A: Male.

Q: Can you give any hints to potential casting?

A: No. Stay tuned.

Q: Will BioWare allow plot / character changes?

A: Yes, we are working closely with BioWare on the development of this project.

Q: Would you consider Daft Punk to do the soundtrack?

A: We love Daft Punk, but it's too early to say who will produce the soundtrack.

Mass Effect is an award-winning, bestselling series of science fiction RPG third-person shooter video games developed by the Canadian company BioWare and released for the Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows and, from the second installment, for the PlayStation 3. The first game in the planned trilogy centers around a player created character named Commander Shepard and his/her mission to save the galaxy from a race of mechanical beings known as the Reapers, and its followers, including the brainwashed Saren Arterius. The first game sees Shepard facing Sovereign, a Reaper left as a vanguard, who plans to allow the Reaper fleet currently hibernating in extra-galactic dark space to invade the Milky Way and destroy all sapient organic life, continuing a mysterious cycle of destruction. The second game takes place two years later, and sees Shepard battling the Collectors, an alien race abducting entire human colonies in a plan to help the return of the Reapers. The third and final game will center on the final battle against the Reapers.

Since the beginning the series has been a major critical success. Both games have received critical acclaim for their storyline, characters, romances, voice acting, choices, tolerance of diversity, and the depth of the galaxy.[1][2][3] Video game website, GamesRadar, called Mass Effect the best new franchise of the generation, saying that the galaxy was so well-constructed that it felt like a decades-old franchise and that it represented "a high-water mark for video games as a story-telling medium."

YES! Love these games so goddamn much, if Bioware is involved, that means they will make it amazing.

Daft Punk should totally do the soundtrack!

Logan Marshall Green would be good choice as Shepard. Guy Pearce would be awesome too. My Shepard looked more like Sam Worthington thou.

Not Daft Punk - The Mass Effect soundtrack itself was epic and brilliant!, perfectly suited. Stop trying to emulate TR2N because it will backfire.

I wouldn't get my hopes too high. My favorite characters likely won't be in the movie for pacing reasons, and truly (as demonstrated spectacularly in the second game) the characterization is one of the most important aspects of the series.

Tali has a small possibility considering the Quarians made the Geth. Garrus... maybe, but don't expect more than just a cameo. I'm wondering how human-centric the story will be. Will it focus on Shepard becoming the first human Spectre (I wouldn't) or will that just be an afterthought to the mission? Will the Asari even make an appearance or will Benezia and Liara be completely written out to streamline the story? Likewise with the Krogan and the Salarian-spawned Genophage. Can't really count on Wrex inviting himself aboard the Normandy when all he would be is just a glorified soldier.

But who knows? They could surprise us all. Regardless, we have the games to fall back on, and they won't be affected by any future movie release.

I do think Garrus, Tali and Wrex would be in there in not too minor roles, because, well, they are some of the most popular characters in the game and they are the recognizably designed aliens, plus the ones best suited to get bigger roles in the sequel (at the very least Tali and Garrus). In the end though, we probably can't expect their roles to be more than say...something like Storm in the first X-Men movie. Clearly important and they'll probably get their awesome action bits and funny lines, but the character development will be mostly for Shepard, probably Liara (who has the best chances of being the used love interest because she's the beautiful alien) and whoever will die between Ash and Kaiden.

I really don't like Ash. She pushes the whole "I don't like aliens" way too often to the point where she's clearly insulting Tali in the elevator. Or maybe I'm just a sucker for Tali. Nonetheless, we'd probably get Michelle Rodriguez shoving a pistol in Wrex's face, rather than Karl Urban pinching the bridge of his nose.

this can be adapted so easily with a maxed out character and only doing the story missions the game can be cleared in like 3 hours so a 2 and half to 3 hour movie can be easily done by just following the game. don't eff this up people.

What ever happened to Matthew Fox confirming that he was going to play Shepard? I've been under that assumption for almost a year

I LOVE Mass Effect. I hope they do this right. Personally, though, I think they should make it into an epic mini-series or at least a 3 hour movie

Daft Punk did Tron Legacy because the first had an importance for them in terms of its/their look and as a film growing up.

I cant imagine they would give in and do the music to a game I wouldn't be surprised if they hadn't heard of, let alone played, as big a game it is.

@papt, of course Garrus will be in it. He will be a main character alongside Ashley. He's ridiculously popular (which is good). I bet Tali will be another companion as well.
