While promoting her new horror film,
You're Next (which is receiving rave reviews from the critics), Australian actress Sharni Vinson (Step Up 3D) spoke with
Flicks and the City about her interest in
Tomb Raider and
Elektra. Vinson has gone on record previously to state that she'd like to reboot the
Tomb Raider film series and expanded further on those thoughts here about why she's interested in Lara Croft. "It's those exact type of roles that I'm really seeking. Roles that I can sink my teeth into as an actor but also as someone that [grew up] with so many sports and is super, super physical. The more you can put me in training and the more I can actually do on a set, the better for me. Standing and delivering a line every now and then gets quite old, quite quickly. When it comes to physical roles, I thrive on that and something like the Lara Croft series would just be amazing because it's the same type of female empowerment that we're trying to get across and I think is just a stand-up role model for all women out there. If I could be the one that can portray that and hopefully kickstart that off again in this generation, that would be amazing. Because it's been a while I feel, that we've had that female role model to look up to and that's what attracted me to [You're Next]."
The conversation then turned to Joss Whedon's recent statement about the lack of superhero women on movie screens and if Vinson would be interested in playing a superhero role. Vinson was all for it, stating, "Give me Elektra, something cool. I have fun coming on to sets, it's kind of like dress up...When it comes to those types of superhero movies, it would be fun to put on the red lycra red catsuit."
