Mortal Kombat doesn't hit U.S. theaters until later this month, but the video game reboot had its premiere in Thailand last week, and has been screening in several overseas locations since.
Of course, this means major spoilers finding their way online was inevitable, and we now have some details on the ending of the movie which should make fans of a certain klassic kharacter very happy indeed.
According to reports, Mortal Kombat concludes with the surviving heroes setting off to recruit new warriors for the lethal tournament (which doesn't actually take place in this film), and Cole Young (Lewis Tan) telling his friends that he's leaving to speak to someone he knows "in Hollywood."
Just in case that wasn't a big enough hint, a movie poster promoting star Johnny Cage can supposedly be seen in the background of the final shot.
Director Simon McQuoid has previously suggested that Cage wasn't included in this initial line-up of fighters because he was being "saved" for the sequel, and this would seem to confirm plans to debut the fan-favorite character in a potential follow-up.
What do you guys think? Does this make up for Cage's absence? Let us know in the comments, and click here to check out the first round of reviews for Mortal Kombat.
In “Mortal Kombat,” MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld's Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family's safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark.
Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?
Mortal Kombat is set for a simultaneous release in theaters and on HBO Max on April 23.
