Despite Gal Gadot's insistence that she'll return as Diana Prince, all signs point to her time as Wonder Woman having ended. James Gunn has already cast a new Superman and is searching for Batman, so there's no reason to believe he'd keep the DCEU actress around.
The plug was pulled on Wonder Woman 3 pretty soon after DC Studios was formed as it didn't fit into their direction for the new DCU.
That meant Wonder Woman and Wonder Woman 1984 writer/director Patty Jenkins was given her marching orders, and she confirmed the planned threequel isn't happening during a recent interview.
Asked if the movie has been scrapped, the filmmaker said, "Yeah, for the time being, but probably easily forever." Asked if another director would take her place, Jenkins responded, "No, they’re not interested in doing any Wonder Woman for the time being."
"It’s not an easy task, what’s going on with DC," she added. "James Gunn and Peter Safran have to follow their own heart into their own plans. I don’t know what they’re planning on doing and why...I have sympathy for what a big job it is."
DC Studios is developing a TV series set on Themyscira, though the belief is that it takes place long before Wonder Woman was born. While Gunn may have something planned for the hero, he hasn't been particularly forthcoming on what it could be.
Another of Jenkins' projects which has run into trouble is Lucasfilm's Rogue Squadron. Now, she's back working on the movie's script.
"So, when I left Star Wars to do Wonder Woman 3, and I started working on that, we talked about, 'Well, maybe I’ll come back to Star Wars after Wonder Woman 3,' so we started a deal for that to happen," she said. "When Wonder Woman 3 then went away, Lucasfilm and I were like, 'Oh, we’ve got to finish this deal.'"
"We finished the deal right as the strike was beginning, so I now owe a draft of Star Wars. So we will see what happens there. Who knows? We’ll see what happens. We need to get it to where we’re both super happy with it."
It's strange that Rogue Squadron went from being announced with a splashy video to being a movie that may or may not happen. This may be another project former Disney CEO Bob Chapek was looking to rush out, so perhaps it's best everyone involved is now taking their time.
