Chris Claremont Shares His Thoughts On Bryan Singer's X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Both The Wolverine and X-Men: Days of Future Past are based on the work of legendary writer Chris Claremont, and he shares his thoughts here on Bryan Singer's big screen adaptation of the latter. "It's about fighting for freedom and the cost of fighting for freedom."

20th Century Fox's X-Men movies haven't always pleased fans, but for the most part, Chris Claremont likes what the studio has done with Marvel's merry band of mutants. Talking to Newsarama recently, the writer was asked to share his thoughts on the upcoming adaptation of X-Men: Days of Future Past. It's currently unknown just how much of the original storyline will make it to the big screen, but the fact that so many past cast members have been brought back into the fold has led fans to believe we will at least get a reasonably faithful version.

"The challenge, I would think, for Bryan is that the heart of the original story is not the fight with the Brotherhood back in the present day. The challenge, the story, is actually what happens in the future. Getting them to the point where you can send Kitty back, and seeing the consequences of what will happen if they fail, and not knowing at the end how it's going to turn out. You think it's going to be a happy ending, but you're not sure, because pretty much everybody dies — in the comic, anyway. You can't not be invested. That's pretty much most of my working life, dancing around or through the X-Men as a concept."

"You could look at it as time travel, or you could look at it as pan-dimension. It's all a matter of how you want to define it, and I'm sure they've got some brainiacs out on the left coast earning a small research stipend figuring out a plausible way of making it fly. That's the fun and games of Hollywood. How the hell they're going to fit it into 120 minutes, I have no sodding idea. I'd be looking on this as your basic 1974 film with an intermission."

"In movies it's a one-shot item too often. If we're doing Days of Future Past, we need Ororo, we need Logan. OK, we've got Hugh Jackman, but that means we've got to get Halle Berry. I'm sure some accountant at Fox is going, 'Huh? 'We're talking how much?' On the other hand, you never know when a major talent is willing to do a Scarlett Johansson, and come in perhaps at scale, just for the fun of it. The really nice thing with Future Past is that you actually have a superhero film — much to everyone's surprise, I will hope — that is about something. It's about racism, I hope. It's about resisting oppression. It's about fighting for freedom and the cost of fighting for freedom. I will be fascinated to see how they weave the two together."

I'd love to see Claremont's reaction when he finds out how butchered the story will be.

Got to meet Chris this weekend at our Comic-con. Pretty cool guy. I asked this very question with his response being the pretty much the same thing. By the way, I got him to sign my copy of Days of Future Past.

@LEVI I've heard The Usual Suspects is great. I haven't gotten around to watching it yet but I hopefully will soon. Singer seems like a very mixed bag - He's made some great films (X2, apparently Usual Suspects), some mediocre films (Superman Returns, X-Men), and some pretty bad films (I've heard Jack and the Giant Slayer's pretty bad).

I must admit though, I can't say I'm looking forward to DOFP, which is doubly worrying as any X-Men fan should be looking forward to an adaptation of that story.

Usual suspects is one of the most underrated movies IMO. AND XMEN 2 is def in my top 5 best comicbookmovies ever

Avengers
The dark knight
Spider-Man 2 - how this movie doesn't get more love is beyond me
Xmen2
Ironman 1

Valkyrie is also good, not great but much better than superman returns.

Singer actually understands the value of storytelling and incorporating the themes apparent in all xmen mythos I've ever read or watched in cartoons. ie... Segregation, race, separation or mutants/ humans, etc

I dont find mature enough the comments of some users saying Bryan's only good movie was Usual suspects.

Havent u watched Apt pupil? if you have and dont like it, I dont have any idea about what is a good movie to you.

Usual Suspects
Apt Pupil
X-men
X-men 2
and even Superman Returns have all been good movies.

If some of you cant see the quality of those movies, then class dismissed.

Singer has a lot riding on this project, especially due to the fact that Jack the Giant Slayer was a shit movie. He better deliver the goods.

The truth is every director can do some shitty movies, some average movies, or some great ones too.

Singers best movies are for me Valkyrie and X2

Can't remember Usual Suspects, Apt Pupil.

Didn't see Jack the Giant yet.

X1 was above average. I was in there for drama, not for sf.

Superman Returns was rather bland.

This guy also brought you House. Don't you forget it.

“The Usual Suspects” was a great movie.
“Apt Pupil” was very good.
“X-Men” and” X2”, with the exception of some miscasting and poor portrayal of Cyclops’ character, were good to pretty good.
“Superman Returns” was an injustice to the legacy of Superman. This movie was terrible in so many ways, too numerous to get into.
“Valkyrie” was a good movie.
I haven’t seen “Jack the Giant Slayer”.
All in all, he is hit or miss. And to direct “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, we need it to be awesome!
