Editorial: 10 Reasons Why X-Men: First Class Will Be Better Than We Think!

I have compiled a list of reasons on why we shouldn't put down First Class so early, and that the movie might actually be good. More after the jump!

1. It's directed by Matthew Vaughn.

Vaughn was originally going to direct X-Men: The Last Stand, but later pulled out because of (supposedly) he didn't want to be far from his family. As we all know, the same reason was given by Darren Aronofsky after he left The Wolverine. Last year, Vaughn directed the breakout action/comedy film Kick-Ass, with it getting mainly positive reviews (with some going as far as to say that it's one of the best CBMs of all time), despite containing controversial content. I've even heard some people say that Vaughn can't do a bad movie, so why is X-Men: First Class getting all sorts of hate? Fox is apparently letting him do it, and as long as they don't screw anything up, Vaughn will deliver a film that will satisfy those who enjoyed his previous outings.

2. It's produced by Bryan Singer.

Say what you will about his not handling Superman Returns as well as he could have, Singer gave us two X-Men films that many were satisfied with (with X2 gaining very positive reviews and was quite a box office success as well), and wasn't involved with two films that everyone hated. If he can bring to his production skills what he brought to the first two X-films, then I can see some promise coming.

3. It won't focus on Wolverine for a change.

Don't get me wrong, I love Wolverine far more than any other X-Men character, but it seemed like, in the previous X-Men films, that the focus was too much on him instead of the team as a whole. Now that Wolverine's out of the picture, we can focus on characters that haven't had much focus into their background (Mystique, Beast, and of course Magneto and Xavier).
On another note that could be classified under this reason, many people have complained that Cyclops and Jean Grey won't be in this film. I personally am in the majority that both characters should've had some part in the film, but at the same time, it might be beneficial so we can have more screen time with new characters like Emma Frost, Banshee, Havok, etc. who haven't been in film before.

4. The casting seems to be solid so far.

James McAvoy looks similar to a young Patrick Stewart, while Michael Fassbender so far fits in like a glove as Magneto. Although kind of old for the role, January Jones looks great as Emma Frost, while Jennifer Lawrence and Nic Hoult seem just fine as their respective characters. I don't think the casting is something to be worried about in this movie.

5. We'll finally see the origins of Magneto, Xavier, etc. told on the big screen.

One of the grips I've had with the first X-Men film is that (tying in with reason #3) the story only followed Wolverine and Rogue and their finding their way into the X-Men, instead of starting completely from scratch to tell the entire team's origin, the beginning of Xavier's rivalry with Magneto, etc. Now, with X-Men: First Class and its announced sequels, we can finally see the events that led up to the war between the X-Men and Brotherhood in film form.

6. X-Men Origins: Wolverine's timeline won't interfere with the rest of the X-films.

Although I enjoyed Wolverine, its timeline was undeniably screwed over when it came to the X-Men film universe (especially concerning Emma Frost). According to Singer, the film's timeline will be ignored when it comes to the rest of the film series.

7. Screenwriters from Kick-Ass and Thor have written the script.

As stated before, Kick-Ass has been received with many good reviews, and Thor (while not in the US just yet) has had nearly unanimously positive reviews since its recent world premiere. Having screenwriters from both films should be a CBM fan's dream.

8. The film has been compared to Batman Begins by Vaughn.

Ah yes. Ever since its release, nearly every CBM with origins have been compared to Batman Begins, usually near the top of lists containing the greatest CBMs of all time. If X-Men: First Class will be anything like it, then it might have similar success.

9. Vaughn modeled the film after Star Trek (2009).

The 2009 reboot of the Star Trek was met with universally positive reviews upon release (and I still consider it one of my favorite films of all time). Vaughn had First Class modeled after the film by taking the franchise in a new direction with a fresh, young cast. Again, if First Class is anything like what it's been compared to/modeled from, it should be good.

10. Even Vaughn himself has attacked the film's poor marketing.

This is a bit of a minor reason, but I wanted to bring it up anyways. After the release of those embarrassing posters featuring Magneto and Xavier's silhouettes with Fassbender and McAvoy's faces onto the lower parts of their bodies, Vaughn lashed out asking "WTF is this s**t?". Then we got the two theatrical posters this week, which got slightly better reception but criticized the use of Photoshop on the characters' placements between the two posters.

So there, those were a few reasons I brought up in hopes of bringing more appeal to this movie. It's a matter of opinion when it comes to whether or not the movie will be good, but honestly I've been tired of all the hate comments when I don't believe it deserves it. We'll see how it fares on June 3rd.

GEEZUZ dude cannot believe of all people your defending this pile of crap slap in the face!??

Fingers crossed it BOMBS and bombs bad!

We need this franchise back where in belongs at MARVEL STUDIOS... anyone that says different ain't no true Marvel Comics fan!

Fox has destroyed this franchise and royally [frick]ed it up the A$$!

I can put 30 reasons why its BS too! ; P

@LEEE I'd like to see you do so. ;P
And I agree that it belongs at Marvel, but with sequels to First Class planned already as well as X4, X5, Wolverine 2, and Deadpool (no telling what else) it probably won't be at Marvel anytime soon. -_-

I think it will go back to marvel...People will get tired of the x men eventually and its only so many reboots they can do. Same with the spiderman franchise.

As long as Fox keep producing X-Men related films, they will not lose the rights, and they'll keep making them regardless of whether they're good or bad, and there will ALWAYS be an audience ready to watch whatever they make.

I'm an X-Men fan, I liked the first 2 films and the first 3/4 of X-Men Origins: Wolverine. I am not going to wait for a day that will not come for a long time, just to watch an X-Men movie produced by a different studio, even if it is Marvel, cos Fox COULD produce some amazing films in that time. This looks like it could be one of them.

There's no point on [female dog]ing about a film that hasnt even been released based on a couple of bad films in the past, movie series' have their ups and downs (just look at the James Bond series).

@LEEE, I don't understand how you can [female dog] about X-Men First Class, and basically beg for an X-Men reboot under Marvel, and at the same time have WANTED a Spider-Man 4 (by Sony) instead of the reboot, despite Raimi's plans to turn Felicia Hardy into 'Vulturess'. At least Fox's X-Men franchise haven't made up any major characters. Sure the timeline's [frick]ed, but so is the timeline of the comics, at the end of the day, just pick and choose what stories you like and think of them as canon, and disregard the ones you dont, but don't judge a movie before it is released, or you could end up eating your words and looking like a complete fool. I'm not saying First Class will be the perfect X movie, it could even turn out to be the biggest pile of crap ever recorded, but from what I've seen, it looks great, and I wont make a final judgement until I watch the film.
In an ideal world, Marvel Studios would own all their properties, X-Men Origins Magneto would've been made instead of this, and we could look forward to a massive Marvel epic containing all their characters. But that won't happen any time soon, so why not try and enjoy what we get in the meantime, instead of being cynical, and if you cant, at least stop whining on every article despite nobody knowing anything about the film.

Where or when did Singer say that First Class would be ignoring Wolverine Origins time line? They used Patrick Stewart as Prof X in the ending, & he's tied in with the original X-trilogy. First Class ties in with the X-trilogy.
What I know was said that certain liberties where taken with continuity issues regarding the other movies. (Origins included)

@megabatfan I read somewhere in the comments of an Xmen article that someone said he said that..

I agree with your points, but also kind of agree with Lee. I've only been into comics for about a year or so and the reason I can't wait to see this movie is because I'm not that well educated on the X-Men. The movie, imo, looks amazing, but all I know of the characters is from the old and new cartoons, and Singer's films. I can see the argument from both sides, but stand by the movie. It has me excited.

Can't wait to see this movie and I am a true Marvel fan. =/ It's going to be great, has the potential to be the best CBM this summer. It's not like constantly hating on the movie is going to change that fact, either.

BigK1337 - 4/22/2011, 4:36 PM
You are right, those facts does make the movie seem good. But I still feel that the movie wouldn't work out for me. So . . . nothing changes for me.

@ megabatfan The fact that they're using Emma Frost and she has the same power must meant that.

Very nice article Paul. Reason 3 is the only reason I'm seeing this film.

Its unfortunate they named this movie First Class. That name is so inflammatory because we relate it to what we understand as the first class with Cyclops, Jean, Iceman, Angel, Beast. Those characters hearken such nostalgic emotions in us. we will never get to see that movie, fanboys. This may be good movie but I dont know if we can ever forgive them for twisting the story of our beloved characters and then pouring salt in the wounds by calling it First Class.
AC1
AC1 - 4/23/2011, 3:10 AM
@Saintt I'm still hoping the title just references the outcome of the film, where after Xavier and Magneto part ways Xavier has recruited the First Class (although I'd be fine with replacing Iceman with Storm since it's a prequel to the first 2 X-Men films), ready for a sequel. If it weren't called First Class, I doubt people would have as big a problem with it as they do. Maybe it's wishful thinking, I don't know, no one does.

So they're keeping last stand in continuity 2? Then they need to explain moira mactaggert a little, don't u think?

@MovieTheaterLad- so you're not a fan of the xmen? the original fist class boring and uninteresting? seriously, i agree with Saintt. I grew up with the xmen (not literally of course). that was my comic of choice and the fact that we don't get to see the real first class on screen is unfortunate. Angel Salvatore? Darwin? oh yeah, we all remember them. Those were everyones favorite characters (sarcasm btw). It'd be nice to see the xmen done properly for once.

You make decent points. I think it's time for new and unexplored characters. I don't care that they're not following the books. How is this movie going to show us something new, expand on characters that have populated three films, and will it spawn a sequel with a new timeline or attempt to tie in all that's come before?

I just think it's the wrong direction. At least it's not "Magneto Origins." Sigh

#9. Modeled after Star Trek [2009]? Wasn't there an article on April Fool's Day stating a dying Cable would be sent from the future into the past to warn Xavier of horrible altercation many years after X-Men 3? That would be pretty cool in my opinion. I mean, this film looks good, in my opinion, the first real X-Men film. Magneto looks bad ass not old, subtle use of their powers, 007 vibe, geopolitical plot. Finally the X-Men are an action team and not a bunch of freaks trying to be accepted like in the original trilogy. I once had a problem with this being a prequel, because I hated the original three, but if we get a First Class trilogy, there is much more to look forward to.

This movie will be ass paper because there are so many inconsistencies:

-The original X-MEN: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Beast, Angel, and Iceman are supposed to be the first class to fight Magneto. Not all these characters that were introduced later in the X-Men comics universe.

- If Magneto was a young kid during the holocaust and Professor X should be close or at the same age. They should at least be in his early to mid 30's because the X-Men were formed in the 60's which the parallel Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcom X.

-Professor X created Cyberno to locate Cyclops (which is absent from the movie) but refined it and renamed it Cerebro shortly after Jean Grey joined the team. So how can cerebro be created if Jean Grey never joined the first team of x-men.

- In the beginning of the formation of the first X-Men Beast did not mutate to have blue fur. He took a serum later on to further mutate to a blue furball.

-Cyclops was the original and the first X-Man Professor X found to create his team. How is his younger brother Havok introduced in the movie and Cyclops is not.

- The original X-Men never had a blackbird. It was not used used until 1975 in the X-Men universe. When the X-Men were first introduced, they were portrayed as travelling in Professor Xavier's private jet and helicopter.

-Emma Frost never gained the ability to turn into diamond form until waaayyy later on in the X-Men timeline during a conflict in Genosha.

-Mystique was never an X-Man
