EDITORIAL: Why THE WOLVERINE Sequel Should Adapt OLD MAN LOGAN

CBM user TheIncredibleHulksta argues why director James Mangold and 20th Century Fox should adapt Mark Millar's Old Man Logan in the sequel to The Wolverine.

In watching The Wolverine, it was apparent that despite its flaws, it was still a really good adaption of the Japan storyline, and I have been thinking with a sequel announced, it only makes sense that Mangold and the screenwriters will look at certain series or story lines for ideas.

One of my favorite Wolverine story lines is, Old Man Logan. If you're unfamiliar with the basic premise, in a world where the bad guys have won; Logan lives with a tragedy that he had a hand in. He refuses to brandish his claws, and avoids violence all together. However, when Hawkeye approaches him for a job he hesitantly assists the archer in his job and eventually uncovers the truth behind the tragedy.

NO OTHER OPTIONS

Unfourtanetely, most of the X-Men or Wolverine movies have used most of Wolverine's stories that arguably count. Origins was the worst offender for this, essentially making many of Wolverine's early adventures un-adaptable.

Looking at my Comixology account, I realized there isn't many other ways you can take the character, outside of a few unused villains (i.e. Omega Red) and a few unused stories (i.e. Logan, Enemy of the State) but none really make sense in the grand scheme of things. More Japan would not be the worst thing in the world, but do they really want to re-tread on the first movies ideas?

In my eyes, this leaves Old Man Logan; and while being one of the last great Wolverine stories may be considered a bad thing, in this case I think it means this story may get even more attention then it already deserved.

MANGOLD'S HISTORY

Mangold as a director was actually a bit of an odd choice for me when he was first announced as Director for The Wolverine. Not to say I doubted him, but I knew of him from 3:10 to Yuma, and Walk the Line. The latter not being a Western, but it had a very Western feel.

If you're Mangold, and you enjoy the idea of doing a Western, then doing a Superhero Western would be close to a dream come true. He'd be able to bring his tricks and sensibilities to the film while still making a marketable box office hit.

MILLAR'S CONNECTION

It's also not too surprising that Mark Millar is a consultant at Fox with their properties, and it can't be a coincidence that he's also the writer for Old Man Logan.

What would be better for a writer of a comic to choose a Director he likes to adapt his story, and while Mangold was a good choice for The Wolverine, he could also have been lined up for a sequel. If this is the case, then Millar may help bring his own story to life.

A 'FUN' OFFSHOOT

With so many CBM's these days bulding a shared universe, and trying to bridge everything together, I'd argue it'd also be a lot of fun to just watch a standalone movie. That's why I enjoyed The Wolverine so much, aside from the post-credits stinger, and Jean Grey appearing -- the movie was it's own thing.

I think there's room in the crowded CBM space for standalones, and movies that can have fun and do whatever because at the end of the day they aren't building to anything.

Because I feel this coming on in the comments, I figured I'd make some simple substitutions. Because we know some characters will be off limits (or maybe they're in the grey area, who knows) I figured I'd substitute where I could to show some of you haters that this adaption will always be possible

Red Skull ---> Dr. Doom
'New' Kingpin ---> Magneto
Hulk ---> Sabertooth

They would need to borrow rights to Hulk and Hawkeye for it

Magneto would not work, else he would be nearly 200 years old.
Sabertooth instead of Hulk is kinda of difficult as how would all his children be like monsters? nvm they would have the x-gene but they would not all develop the same

Hawkeye ---> Cyclops/Gambit
Kingpin ---> Blob
New Kinpin ----> Rachel Summers
Hulk Gang----> Sabretooth bred with Mystique
Blackbolt----> Banshee/ Siren
Mysterio----> Scarlett Witch

I actually re read this recently and yes it would make a hell of a movie, but since this is more of the final chapter, I'd like one more solo film before it.

No, no, no, no. Come up with original stories, stop trying to copy comic books.

Im not real sure how they could do it without characters like Hulk, Hawkeye, Red Skull, and all the important Marvel characters that Fox doesn't have rights to.

Replacing characters with X-Characters isn't the way to go. Although it wouldn't be the first time Fox butchered an awesome comic story.

Lets see...

Dark Phoenix

Wolverine Origin

Wolverine Japan

Days of Future Past looks to have potential, so I won't count it....but then again all the others had awesome trailers too and turned out to be garbage, so the verdict is still out.

Its just funny how the best X-Films have been the ones that didnt try to adapt a story from the comics.

Whats even funnier is the fact that when they do adapt a story from the comics, they find a way to screw it up...even though they own the rights to all the necessary characters. Whats funnier still, is the fact that they own the rights to the characters, yet still don't take advantage of the right ones for the story they are adapting.

Knowing that, how on earth would anyone expect an adaptation like Old Man Logan to work when they dont even own the rights to a lot of the characters that make that story great?

Magneto already has an area of America in Old Man Logan. Also probably can't use Spider Bitch, or the majority of the characters at the beginning. And most importantly Hawkeye

I think Old Man Logan would be the best way to go, especially if it ends up being Hugh Jackman's last Wolverine movie (is he really going to keep playing this character for another decade or more? Is it better to quit while he's ahead, and give the character a good send-off?)

The thing is, a few creative changes need to be made. Hawkeye, for example, can't be in the film despite practically being Logan's sidekick in the original story. Similarly, Spider-Bitch and The Red Skull can't be used, nor can the Hulk.
However, fortunately, FOX have a number of characters they could use instead, including a pantheon of mutants with various powers, and also Fantastic Four characters.

Hawkeye could be replaced by Bishop, Cable, Deadpool (might steal the limelight), Colossus (a great chance to explore their comic friendship), or even The Human Torch (too much focus away from X-Men?), Jubilee, Shadow Cat or Rogue.

Spider-Bitch could be replaced by Mystique, Illyana Rasputin (if Colossus replaces Hawkeye), or even Yukio (embittered by some kind of betrayal by Logan?) or someone else.

The Red Skull could be replaced by Magneto, Mister Sinister, even Doctor Doom.

No other options? Um Wolverine has had plenty of stories in the comics. Also they could just craft an original story that isn't an adaption.

I think they should use the Wolverine movie to introduce a new team of characters so Wolverine can bow out or transition to a new actor.

Its a good story, but the start is too similar to The Wolverine, as you said in the second paragraph -
"Logan lives with a tragedy that he had a hand in. He refuses to brandish his claws, and avoids violence all together. However, when Hawkeye approaches him for a job he hesitantly assists ..." replace a character and the location, you basically have the start of The Wolverine.

Also, replacing the Marvel owned characters with the Fox owned ones will really dilute the story and take everything that made it great away.

Personally, I would like to see a Wolverine film that doesn't end in a stupid cgi-fest. I was so disappointed with the way The Wolverine nose dived into cgi at the end. I think a all out brawl with someone on a similar level, they could always try to adapt the Origins series and involve Romulus and Daken. They would rely less on cgi jiggery pokery!

Fox doesn't have the rights to the Hulk, black bolt, venom symbiote, red skull, ghost rider or hawkeye. So this story isn't ever happening. All these characters appeared in the story and the idiots at Fox are never getting their hands on them. Fox can suck a dick.

Old Man Logan was great but it is not movie material. It presents an alternate Marvel Universe, which is really only fir comic fans.

If they do the Old Man Logan storyline then it should be a joint operation between Fox and Marvel just so Red Skull can be it- no substitutions.

i just think its crazy how much fans have changed.

3 or 4 years ago on this site, no one here would even be willing to entertain the idea of swapping out characters from a story with random x-characters just so they can do a half-assed version of a great comic story.

I don't get it.

No way. Just no way. OML is an amazing story because of the characters and the development they all go thru. Swapping people in and out based off of who FOX has the rights to is a disaster waiting to happen. In fact it sounds like an idea that would come straight from a FOX producers meeting...are you one of them??? :-) it'd be fun, but only done right. Do it animated like Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, that's the only easy we'd ever see it done remotely well.

@Lhornbk, it's funny that you say that, because I'm always thinking that the comics aren't utilized nearly weigh, and it's the straying away which kills these films. But you could be onto something, in that what works on page doesn't always work on film.

This already exists.
It's a film starring Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman & Gene Hackman, called "Unforgiven".
Mark Miller is a hack who ripped off that movie so heavily, he should be sued.
