Ian McKellen On Returning As 'Magneto' In X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Revealing that he yet to read the script to discover just how big of a role he will have in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, Sir Ian McKellen discusses his return as the villainous 'Magneto' and says he looks forward to facing off with his younger self!

Earlier this week, it was revealed that Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen would be reprising their roles as 'Charles Xavier' and 'Eric Lensherr' in X-Men: Days of Future Past. The Huffington Post caught up with McKellen recently and asked him for his thoughts on reprising the role he first took on in 2000's X-Men. "What a gas! I mean, Patrick Stewart and I have been have just been playing "Waiting for Godot" throughout England and in the West End of London. So, we've stayed in touch. We can't believe it [laughs]. I thought these were Fassbender and McAvoy's parts, but -- no, no -- we're back. We'll give them a run for their money. I mean, I haven't read the script, so I don't know how much we've got to do. But, to be back in that world, and for Bryan to be doing it -- with all the success he's had in the meantime -- it's wonderful. Wonderful." So, he's clearly enthusiastic about a return, but how does he feel about facing off against Michael Fassbender's take on the iconic villain in X-Men: First Class? "I thought he was exactly that: first class. Excellent... I thought he was better than me. But, we weren't quite playing the same character because he was so much younger than me."

I find it so hard watching Ian McKellen as Magneto because he's Gandalf in my eyes. Even though I watched him in X-Men before Lord of the Rings, he's absolutely iconic as Gandalf. It'll be weird to see him return to Magneto again.

Even if Sir Ian McKellen makes a small cameo, it will still be cool seeing him in X-M:DOFP.

Thought it was really fantastic of him to say Fassbender was better.

I love Ian Mckellen, but I'd have to agree with him when he said Fassbender's magneto was better.

Wonder since The Wolverine takes place after X3 if it will end on a note where DOFP will begin. Like, will the "X-Men" travel to the future and that's where they'll meet Wolverine? Then they meet up with Xavier, Magneto, etc., and then try to undo X3 or whatever caused the desolated future...

If Marsden is Cyclops, Hugh is Wolverine, Famke is Jean, Page is Kitty, Cudmore is Colossus, Kitsch (Or Matt Bomer) is Gambit, along with the others, ESPECIALLY is perhaps the best casted Kelsey Grammer returns as Beast, I'll be first in line to watch DOFP.
Otherwords, "Meh".

Hope Marsden gets the Star-Lord position. If not, DOFP is his time to shine.

It is a tragedy we were not given the pleasure to see Michael Clarke Duncan as Apocalypse, R.I.P.

Is it wrong that I'm picturing the scene of their confrontation being something like this:

Old Magneto: "Oh my, I forgot how delicious I was in these days."
Young Magneto: "Well yes, but we seemed to have aged ..." young Magneto steps in close "well."
Old Magneto smiles and looks affectionately at his younger self: "You have no idea."

@Sidekick...i agree 100%

OH what Marvel Studios could do with the Xmen franchise! it's SO SO SO depressing thinking that the rights will never revert back to Marvel. Fox will keep making mediocre movies and keep the rights..............

I really hope this turns out good. I like X-men 2 and FC but have always had some issues with the X-franchise.
I hope this sequel can bring the heat!

I commented on another article but can't seem to find it, but I can imagine Fassbender's Magneto killing McKellen's Magneto (who would be a reformed character due to his time as a human, even after regaining his powers), because he sees his older self's reformation as weakness against his new vendetta against humanity, and this event changes him, makes him more determined and less likely to falter in his mission, and thus changes the timeline.

I'm looking forward to 20th Century Fox's Marvel Shared Universe. This is an interesting oppurtunity to play up the time travel angle we haven't seen yet. Although the previous films were watered-down Hollywood adaptations they have established the much need background for apocalyptic fate of mankind. X3: The Last Stand will come to great use. Oh man, I appreciate them rebooting the series while acknowledging the previous films.

bring on nightcrawler, it was complete horseshit that he was only in X2. Fox actually did justice to a great character then, POOF! he's gone. (no pun intended)

It's nice to hear such a great actor actually be excited about returning to a CBM.

i agree everyone is getting their hopes up.

Oh and someone please tell me what was so good about X1 and X2. The only thing that was good about them was Stewart at Professor X, but that was a must have---anyone that read the Casting Call section of Wizard magazine back in the day has to agree! Stewart was always chosen for Professor X!!!!!

@SpongeGeekNerdgasmPants yeah, I think the original comment has actually been deleted, I've been trying to track it down for a while and can't find it anywhere. It's a shame, because I had some other ideas like that the plot would be propelled from The Last Stand, where you find out that Jean didn't kill Prof X or Cyclops, but sent them through time, and the X-Men trying to rescue them begins the time travel plot.
Not entirely sure how they're going to cause the 60s X-Men characters to meet the present day X-Men characters, but then I'd imagine older Prof X would be killed off, the idea that young Mags might kill older Mags, and that then the 60s versions of the characters would time travel to the present day permanently in the vein of Marvel Now's idea of bringing the younger versions of the first class to the present day in the comics. Of course, Magneto would also travel to the future with them.

Perhaps Xavier dies in the past, older Magneto brings the 60s X-Men to the present, along with his past self who is pretending to be on their side, only for him to betray them once they get back and kill his older self.

Don't expect this to be faithful to the comics. Reboot the whole thing new cast, writers, directors the lot. The old cast had its chance apart from Stewart no one else was good.

Oh, after Fist Ass, I knew any future films would not be anywhere near close to the source. But what I do hope is that they retcon X3, fix it, get a good solid cast and do X-Men 4: Rise of Apocalypse.

And please... Please -- Make Cyclops the leader, dammit.

Issues with X2?? Ok... storm sucked, Cyclops was less then useless, wolverine got his ass kicked by death stryke, the whole scene at bobbys house was just terrible. Wolverine having traveled and explored alcolai lake thoroughly but some how missed any signs of a fully functional military base? X2 was ALMOST good. I love xmen, it really was almost good. Its the best of 3 soso movies. Even 1st class could have been better. I really hope the fix Xmen. I have zero, none, nada, zilch, no, faith in synger and his ability to do a good x story let alone something as complicated as Futures Past AND unf*&k the timeline/continuity at the same time. There has to be some sort of set up during Wolverine.
