James McAvoy Elaborates On X-Men: First Class Role & Rushed Production!

Now chatting in-depth with Collider, Scottish actor James McAvoy now discusses his 'Charles Xavier' role in X-Men: First Class, elaborating the overall "rushed" experience, parts he favored, as well those he thought was tough playing such an iconic character. Also sharing how he thinks it'll turn out with Matthew Vaughn's (Kick-Ass) directorship, read on below.

What is it like to do X-Men: First Class and have such a quick turn-around, since the film is due out on June 3rd?
"I don’t think I’ve ever made such a big movie, in such a short period of time. It’s nuts, really. But, we’re getting it done. No movie has ever got enough time. It doesn’t matter how much money you’ve got, and it doesn’t matter how much money you’ve not got. You never finish on time. You’re always up against it and you’re always working up until the end. To get three days off the schedule to come and do [press for Gnomeo & Juliet] is a nice break ‘cause it is just [non-stop], all the time. But then, that’s what it is with every single movie I’ve ever been on. It just feels like the usual. It’s more about whether they can get it ready in time for the release date. They’re working on the editing now, and they’re working on the special effects now. They’ve got a big department working 24/7 on it."

From what you were told about the film to how it’s turning out, how does it compare?
"It’s pretty much what I thought it would be when (director) Matthew [Vaughn] took me through it all. He really wanted to play off the ‘60s setting of it, and play off the style of that, visually, in the design of the costumes and all that, which we totally got. And, he wanted us to be really free, in terms of characterization, and was confident in taking it as far away from the original characters, not as we could, but as we thought was right. We’ve really done that quite a lot. Otherwise, there’s no point in doing a prequel, if they’re just the exact same people. They’ve got to be very different, otherwise there is no journey. This story is all about that journey to showing the seeds of how they are in the other X-Men movies, and to show what could have been between Erik and Charles – or Professor X and Magneto (Michael Fassbender) – and to show why it couldn’t be."

What’s been the toughest part about playing such a popular character?
"The toughest part is probably that I’ve got a great superpower and, if you had it in real life, it would be amazing, but in a movie, everybody else is bouncing off the walls and shooting [frick]ing beams of light out of their chest and doing crazy stuff and making things fly around, and I’m [putting my finger to my forehead]. It just feels a little bit like, “Oh, god!” But, what’s nice is that it means I have less CGI and stunt work to do, which means I have more time in my bed. That’s the thing. I look at all the other people using their superpowers and I’m like, “That would have been fun!”

What’s been the best part of this gig?
"The best part about it, for me so far, is that I really love the cast. The cast has just been incredible. We’ve had a lot of fun, actually. I’ve loved working with [Michael] Fassbender. I think he’s great. I’m so glad that we got to collaborate on something. But, just from top to bottom, the cast is amazing. Having Kevin Bacon play your baddie is great. It’s a great, slightly left-field piece of casting as well. I don’t think anybody expected that. Hopefully, that’s a clue as to what the movie will be."

Do you know what you’re going to do after X-Men: First Class? Are you looking to do something a bit smaller in scale?
"Yeah, I think I’ll be doing something a little smaller, but I don’t know what that will be yet. It won’t be for a little while. I’m going to take a little bit of time. I might do some theater, or something like that. There are a couple of movies in the pipeline for the second half of the next year, but not solidified yet, so I can’t really say what. There are plans, but nothing I’m willing to say yes to just yet."

While currently under-going filming and editing in unison, that seems to be FOX's master plan to meet the slated June 3 release for the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class prequel. What do you think?

I'm excited for this movie, really judging by the director i think it'll be good. Gavin Hood had buzz from Tsotsi but to me that movie was basically the a watered down version of the better tv series here in South Africa. I think Fox is going to have a good movie.

I love the fact the Charles Xavier that will go through some character yourney in this film.
It will make him seem more dimensional and different from Patrick Stewart's professor X.

@Shocker - We are in what seems to be a silent minority while most people crap on something (quite loudly at that) they haven't even seen.

If it's even as good as X-Men I'd be happy. The first one was pretty good...but not great. X-2 was considered one of the best CBM's EVER at the time and still is in the top ten by most standards.

ScarletSpidey - 1/22/2011, 2:56 AM
@LEEE777 - It actually IS a First Class movie within the context of the universe previously established. To judge it because it's not the exact same thing as the comics is unfair to the filmmakers and film itself.

While I still remain kind of optimistic about this movie,I can understand why people hate it so much.

I mean, they could've at least called it differently.

Lee, Yes, we know it's not based on the First Class comic. We have known that from almost the beginning. Get the [frick] over it. Bitch and moan about the film all you like but you better start coming up with some new reasons for doing so because your usual schtick is getting VERY old.

- WHY this site is creating a bad feeling only about this movie???

- WHY it keeps calling this "Rushed"????

when the own actor has said this movie is like any other: "You never finish on time" and "that’s what it is with every single movie I’ve ever been on"

Stop this now, CBM.

Personally I disliked the first two movies and thought X-3 was a little better. I hated Wolverine as well. When I heard Matthew Vaughn was directing First Class, I thought they were finally getting it right.

I will withhold judgment until I see the movie though...

I don't know why everyone wants the rights to revert back to Marvel so much,
they've made 3 movies so far, & only 1 of them was good.
Iron Man was ok but Iron Man 2 & Incredible Hulk were sort of laughable.
If Thor & Captain America turn out ok then I will have a lot more faith in Marvel Studios,
but until then i'll give Fox another chance & same goes for Spidey & Sony Pictures.

In My Opinion!

IM1 kicked ass and IM2 & the Inc. Hulk were both good movies.

@Intruder - You're right, but I would also add Batman Forever and Batman and Robin to the laughable list.

I get a little nervous about quality when movie people say 'rushed production'. I lot of quality and good ideas get killed because of that. Look at what Joe Johnston said comparing the short prep time for 'The Wolfman' and the time he had on his hands to put Captain America together.

@Intruder
I'm not sure I understand what you mean by 'Compared to what?'.
I've never heard anyone say 'Iron Man was great compared to a poppadom, but terrible compared to a jigsaw'.
I think the answer to your question is 'it's ok compared to every other film in existence'.

Look I love Iron Man & maybe 'laughable' was the wrong word to use for The Incredible Hulk, but I stand by my point.
And I agree with the films you list as laughable

Im tired of everyone saying Ironman 2 was a bad movie only cause they pushed the avengers in it. Even with that I can only think of maybe 7 CBMs thats better. It was a good movie and theyre doing something thats never been done B4. Having the charictors in each others movies is a small price to pay for the Avengers movie.

On the same token if they contiue to intertwine the charictors after the first Avengers movie i would be dissapointed.

The first 2 Xmen movies were good at that time, but watching them now they weren't that great. Tall Wolverine. Emo Rogue. Pansy Cyclops. Mega Old Magneto. Storms disappearing accent. Etc.

@Hush2010: I agree. I never understood why people hate Ironman 2 so much. It was far from a bad movie. They complain that there was to much Nick Fury and SHEILD and too many references to the Avengers. That's funny because in the Ironman comic books they do it all the time. AND IRONMAN 2 WAS A COMIC BOOK MOVIE. In no was does in need to be grouped in the company of Spider-man 3 or X-3.

As for First Class, I personally can't wait to see it. I think Vaughn and Co. are going to have something pretty special to show us.
