Sir Ian McKellen Talks X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST; "I Don’t Get To Go Into The Past"

Reiterating the fact that the older 'Magneto' doesn't travel back in time in Bryan Singer's X-Men: Days of Future Past, legendary actor Sir Ian McKellen hints that the majority of the action takes place in 1970s and the future scenes only serve as a way of kicking off the sequel.

Sir Ian McKellen will next be seen as Gandalf in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, although he reprises the equally iconic role of Magneto in 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past. However, he had a shocking admission to make about that movie when asked about the part he plays in it. "I don’t always understand the plots of these films until I actually see them with an audience." Regardless, as confusing as it may be to him, McKellen did drop a few details about what we should expect from the older version of the character. "It’s all about going into the past, basically. And so I don’t get to go into the past. I don’t think I’m spoiling it by saying that. But we are there in the beginning when the plot is hatched." This is good news for fans hoping that Michael Fassbender's younger version gets the spotlight, and the actor then went on to compare the two characters he's best known for playing. "The odd thing about a Gandlaf is that he’s good through and through. Magneto is a bit of both. He’s well-intentioned, but he perhaps politically is not very sound, and I’m not sure that I quite agree with his tactics."

Am I missing something? I thought we already knew that wolverine is the only one to go back in time and only his mind gets sent back into his younger body?

I do find it interesting however that many actors do not know how their character fits into the overall narrative, since the scripts are so secretive and studios don't want stories to get leaked out. They basically only get the script for the parts of the movie their specifically involved in.

To think about it, it's actually crazy!!! I mean what if the rest of the movie is horrible? And they mutilate your scenes during the editing process...

Can't wait for this movie either way...

ElDarkside@ I dont like giving the actors only their scenes because it cuts them off from the crucial insight into situations that they need to shape their characters actions and responses.

I think that tells us exactly how much "Future" we will actually see.. I remember hearing it would be 40% future and 60% past but i doubt thats accurate.. I want this movie to be good i really do but i have a strong feeling they will shit all over the DoFP & Apocolypse stories.. They needed to reboot this whole universe after First Class.. The timeline and characters are all over the place.. They shouldve rebooted with an X-Men movie including Cyclops, Jean, Wolverine, Beast, Angel, Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Iceman, Kitty, Rogue and Gambit leading into DoFP as a sequel and/or trilogy with Apocolypse showing up at the very end to kick start another group of films where Angel becomes Archangel and throw Mr. sinister in there as a secondary villain.. Boom! awesome!

How come Magneto in the comics always looks so cool and steals the page but in the movies...X-Men 1,2,3...he's just old and stringy looking??

Gotta agree with SlaveMasterFlexx on this one.....

I was also pissed off at how Havok in 1st Class looks like he was hula hooping to manifest his powers....that was insanely LAME!!!

I don't know why you all hate the current Xmen franchise and want it rebooted. I recently bought all the X-men movies that have come out so far with the exception of the Wolverine movie that came out this year, and after watching most of them with the exception of X-men 3 I have enjoyed all of them. Therefore I am really excited for X-men DOFP and X-men Apocalypse

I think Marvel's movie audiences are getting ripped off. Some nice special effects with only a bit of the actual storyline, and terrible continuity. Look how early the Phoenix character was introduced, and then wasted. Jean Gray and Scott Summers fought for her life in the blue area on the Moon. It's scripture. First Class was a nice surprise, and I am looking forward to Days of Future Past. I thought Captain America was great. If I had my way, I'd have a movie made to introduce the Marvel Universe to movie audiences. I'd start at the very beginning, with the Watcher. I'd keep it simple, no High Evolutionary stuff, but I'd introduce the Kree and Skrull empires, Namor, Korvac etc, and Galactus would not be a cloud. You could have a wander through New York, past the Baxter Building, past the Sanctum Sanctorum of Doc Strange, past Matt Murdock's law office, but not quite to where Luke Cage and Daniel Rand hang around in that theatre. Pardon my rant and have a great weekend.

@vandinejd Wait, did you like X-Men Origins: Wolverine? Because if you did I feel sorry for you bro!

@M4 thank u for that reference to Jean and Phoenix in the comics, and how important it was. @Vandine do yourself a favor if you are bold enough and read that comic that M4 mentioned, the Phoenix Saga and Dark Phoenix. After reading that watch X3 again and tell us if you did not feel totally cheated as an intelligent person that you are.. As well think about whether or not the source material was disrespected. We're talking about Jean Grey, arguably the most powerful X-Man ever who wielded the powerful cosmic entity the Phoenix, a force of rebirth and destruction and comparing it to X3's temper tantrum split personality "I call myself Phoenix and my eyes turn black". Nuff said.

.....Fassbender rules!!

SimpleeComplex - 12/6/2013, 5:35 PM
@Vandine while you're at it look up Weapon X by Barry Windsor Smith and Wolverine Origins by Paul Jenkins and tell us how good X-men Origins Wolverine the Movie really is.

That's great and all because it's been established that Wolverine gets sent back in time. I have respect for Sir Ian Mckellan and he does portray Magneto greatly. I just wonder if he'll have some action in DOFP.

Also, will Cyclops be returning any time soon?

@MovieTheaterLad Yes, because this movie is an abomination! Nobody has the right to like this one, Batman & Robin, Catwoman, Supergirl and Elektra! Because I say so!

@SimpleeComplex Thanks for the compliments dude! I'm really powerful, I could kill you all right now!
