Svetlana Khodchenkova Discusses Her Role As 'Viper' In THE WOLVERINE

Svetlana Khodchenkova's only other role in an English language movie was as 'Irina' in 2011's Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. However, the beautiful Russian actress now gets to take on a much more significant part in James Mangold's The Wolverine. In the movie, she plays the villainous Viper; a character extremely well-known to comic book fans as both "Madame Hydra" and Logan's ex-wife (she blackmailed Wolverine into marrying her in order to secure her criminal empire in Madripoor). We don't know an awful lot about how the big screen version of Viper will be portrayed, but here's what Khodchenkova had to say about that in a recent interview with Collider.

On Staying Faithful To The Comic Book Version Of 'Viper':

"Of course being from Russia, I respect all of the comic books American people love. We do follow it a lot. It’s going to still have a little bit of my own flavor to it, but I will do the best I possibly can to match it as closely to the character from the comic books."

On What It Was Like To Work Alongside Hugh Jackman:

"It’s fantastic to work all the cast and crew here, and Hugh Jackman’s amazing. He’s a really kind person, and he always cares about everyone. He’ll come up and ask if you’ve had a good sleep, are you wearing sunblock. He’s very nice. It’s very great to work with him and everyone else."

On The Costumes Donned By 'Viper' During The Course Of The Movie:

"All I can say about the costume now is that every costume is really different, and also being a woman I absolutely love it, all the different changes. It helps my character, because it progresses with the character throughout the film, her costumes and looks. It’s always changing. The most important costume for the Viper-look, the superhero look, is still in progress. We’ve made different versions of it and we’re still working on it. It’s surprising too, because we’re still working on it."

On What Appeals To Her About The Character:

"With my character, certainly she’s a villain, but for me to play the character I have to love the character. I have to realize why she’s doing what she’s doing, and obviously she has reasons for everything she does. I’m working a lot on that. I love the character."

On Whether She Is Hoping This Leads To More Roles In Hollywood:

"I hope. I hope I can do it by myself. At the moment I’m concentrating on my dialect and working with a dialect coach for the film. As soon as I go back to Moscow, I’ve got a teacher waiting for me for English lessons."

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

She's talking in present tense a lot. Is this an older interview just now surfacing because I thought the movie has been finished for a while for her to be "working on that".

@pepe

Yeah. Hence the name Madame Hydra, leader of HYDRA, in her first appearance. But she's also an X-Men villain.

@KingEmperor:
Yeah, she was in the Hasselhoff/Fury flick, right?

@pepe, she's a shared character like Mystique, the Maximoff's and many others. but all in all, outside of maybe Spider Woman she has had a deeper connection with Wolverine then the other heroes. they were married afterall.

and i'd say her connection with Silver Samurai is deeper then any other character as well.

I know Viper only from X-Men cartoons.

She should be in Cap, even if she's a shared character, she's been a Cap villain since the '60's. 'Course, she doesn' look like Viper in Wolverine, so I guess that's a plus. The thin' with Wolverine is that they've spent the last couple decades or so tryin' to rewrite his character and origin to make him more associated with Cap. All of a sudden him and Cap have been friends since WWII, he knew Viper before Cap, Nuke was actually created to copy Wolverine not Cap....the list goes on and on.

@Gary8264

You are right on the money. It kills me when these kids up above bring up the cartoon like it matters. These characters are being retconned and rewritten for a new audience I guess. But some of us old heads know Viper as an old Cap villain.

At any rate, here ties with Wovly are real, so I will not make much of it. But it does kill me when comic fanboys try to act like the Xmen own every character in the Marvel universe. It's these type of characters that move between books that make the split between the movie companies a sore spot for fans.

But how cool would it be if this character and actress were allowed to reprise this exact role in a future Cap movie.

@ParisSun

Thanks, and yeah I can see in order to keep characters fresh there has to be a rehashin' of the stories from time to time. To me, Cap and Wolverine bein' long time friends, is like sayin' Cap and Punisher (who they are also tryin' to tie into Cap more in recent history) are long time friends.

I always liked the Cap stories where Viper/Madam Hydra showed up, to me she was the female version of Red Skull. I even rem a Gruenwald story where she and Skull share a hot tub.
I doubt Marvel and Fox will work together to allow the same actress to do a cross over movie, but I would love to see Viper in an upcomin' Cap movie, just a out and out evil Lady in charge of Hydra.

I love Russian women. They are so beautiful. Svetlana is obviously no exception.

Even her name sounds hot. Ha ha, anyways, I think she'll be great in the role. She sounds committed to it. I just hope the writing for Viper measures up.

@Shamo So that's how FOX could use her. I will always think of Viper/Madame Hydra as more of a Captain America villain than a X-Men villain.

I still don't agree with her playing Viper. My brain just can't accept this.

But yeah, she's hot.

@agentmi5 Lol, yes, I did too.

@fangz Well, whether a beautiful woman is Russian or not, I would still find her beautiful. I find women with accents attractive, and Russian accents are the sexiest accents to me.

I've never been to Russia. It's not exactly high on my list of travel destinations, but maybe I'll end up traveling there someday. I'm not crazy about cold climates. From what I've seen of Russian actresses and the Russian women I've interacted with online, I stand by saying Russian women are beautiful.

Sorry your nationality/ethnicity is such a touchy and sensitive subject for you. I understand though. It's disrespectful to discuss things of that nature for some people. With girls, I'm very respectful about that kind of stuff. I usually tell them what my heritage is before I ask them about theirs. And when I do, I broach the subject carefully as to not offend them in any way.

@bropous OMG... If anyone says she isn't beautiful, they need to have their eyes checked.

YA khochu zanyat'sya s ney lyubov'yu. "I want to make love to her."

@fangz Thanks for the apology, but I didn't really take it as you lashing out at me. Just you speaking hypothetically. I didn't take it personally.

We're cool. :)
