X-MEN '97 Creative Team Talk Apocalypse, Wolverine's Future, And Being "Halfway Through" Season 2 - SPOILERS

X-Men '97's creative team have shared new details about plans for Apocalypse in the show's upcoming second season and shed light on what the plan is for Wolverine after Magneto's devastating attack...

In the X-Men '97 season 1 finale, the team was thrown backwards (and forwards) in time. In 3000 B.C., we watched as Professor X, Magneto, Beast, Rogue and Nightcrawler encountered a young En Sabah Nur, a.k.a. Apocalypse.

Meanwhile, in 3060 A.D., Cyclops and Jean Grey crossed paths with a younger version of their son, Cable. As for Wolverine, Morph, Jubilee, and Storm, they're currently unaccounted for (though it's been confirmed they're not in the present and are scattered across one or both timelines).

Talking to IGN (via Toonado.com), supervising director Jake Castorena teased plans for Apocalypse in X-Men '97 season 2, explaining why the decision was made to put the spotlight back on the iconic villain.

"With the X-Men, for better or for worse, all roads usually end up leading to Apocalypse, right? It's either Apocalypse, Sinister, or Magneto," he says. "What I will say is we do things on purpose. Everything is meticulously done for a reason."

"For those looking to see where Apocalypse goes with the tattered card in his hand, just have to watch Season 2 to find out. But I guarantee you we wouldn't plant stuff if it wasn't going to go on."

That's a nod to the fact we saw the present-day Apocalypse recover one of Gambit's playing cards from the ruins of Genosha. Just like in the comics, it seems the plan now is for Remy LeBeau to "live" again as one of the villain's Four Horsemen: Death.

Addressing the significance of introducing the younger version of En Sabah Nur, director Chase Conley adds, "It is not a deconstruction per se, but it is nice to kind of see the steps of how a character becomes someone like Apocalypse, and so just hinting and setting that up I think is something that I would personally want to see."

"Even if I wasn't working on the show, I'd love to learn more about En Sabah Nur and just the way that he navigates the world given his immense power and what corrupts him."

Of course, it wasn't just the finale which featured a huge surprise because X-Men '97's penultimate episode saw Magneto tear the Adamantium from Wolverine's skeleton. Comic book fans will know that had a huge impact on the mutant and, moving forward, Conley promises we'll see a lot more of Logan after he was largely sidelined in season 1.

"As you can see in Episode 9, we teed up a lot as far as a pivotal stage in Wolverine's history as far as comic runs go," he teases. "So we'll get a chance to really explore more of Logan and his own personal kind of rogues gallery coming up."

Finally, Marvel Animation head Brad Winderbaum offered an update on X-Men '97 season 2 and exactly how far along in the production process it is.

"We're about, I would say, halfway through," he confirms. "We're still in animatic phase where a lot of narrative changes can still be made. We're about halfway done with [voiceover] recording. The storyline is really fun. I don't want to say too much, but I think it delivers on the promise of the second season."

Based on these remarks, we'd expect X-Men '97 to return to Disney+ next year. Next up is What If...? season 3 and, beyond that, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Marvel Zombies are also on the horizon.

Just watched the Dinsey + special on the revival.... man I did not know Ross Marquand was voicing Prof X...the guy is a Chameleon in both Live action and voice acting. Madly underrated talent.

Also it kind of suck Beau DeMayo got NO love or even a background mention for his work on the revival...when the news finally comes out about what went down I feel it's going to make some waves.

@UniqNo - Marquand is excellent as Prof X. And at this point I have to assume DeMayo got fired over something bad. Sexual Harassment, abuse, etc. Disney has to see how popular this show is and I would think they would rehire him if they could. Maybe whatever they did, the person impacted agreed to not go public with it if he was fired and had a non disclosure agreement.

@mountainman - It's gotta be something like that, but things always come out and I would assume that it's better for Disney's image if they got out in front of it now that the season is over. Is S2 isn't coming till next year then they have time to rebuild the hype over the course of next few month if if get it out there with enough time for it to blow over. Alot more outlets are asking questions now due to how popular the revival has been so someone will dig it up sooner or later.

@UniqNo - I agree that a public comment would be helpful. Nearly 100% of people who have seen this show are praising it, and the show runner/writer has a lot to do with that.

Okay so now they're halfway through Season 2, this is where they should either rehire Beau DeMayo or tell the internet why they don't want to.

One of those two things. Either one.

I know it seemed the bastion fight at the end had no emotional pay off. But I want to go rewatch the finale again. Because it was the quintessential end game boss fight

Upgraded villain who can fly ✅️
Sunspot finally leveled up ✅️
Floating battle station ✅️

Even loves how jubilee basically said "don't underestimate me" . She must be protected at all costs

@Vigor - I’ve watched the whole season twice and that final Bastion fight wasn’t near the top of the season for me. The beginning portion with him and Rogue was pretty good due to her finally getting her emotions out after Gambit’s death, but most of the rest of it just wasn’t great.

But I still love the season overall, Bastion as a villain and the tolerance is extension arc. For me, end battles don’t define something. There was so much good in this season. Bastion was such an interesting villain. Other than some minor complains during some arcs (Inferno and Lifedeath stand out with that complaint) and some minor questionable character/story decisions (still don’t get why Sinister would work with Bastion just to get his hands on Cable while dooming the entire mutant race) this season was damn near perfect.

I hope next year we get another setup where we get a combo of old and new villains. Apocalypse can be that familiar thread, but I really hope that with all the time travel and the Summers family being so integral, that Stryfe is the new villain introduced next year.

@Vigor -

Never thought about it that way, but you're not wrong. Chrome Bastion did give off some strong video game boss vibes, more so than Mojo did.

"Talking to IGN (via Toonado.com), supervising director Jake Castorena teased plans for Apocalypse"

Crazy that Jake couldn't just talk to IGN directly and instead had to do so via Toonado. Damn that middle man...

Episode 10 was the weakest episode for me, it's fine I guess. After 9 and the constant escalation I was a little under whelmed

@bobevanz -

I agree that it felt weaker than the ones before, but I still feel that the weakest of the show was Episode 4.
